Who is Likely Next (2013)

If we land Redfield and Muhammad I think that would close out the defensive side unless an elite player wants in.
I'd like to see us land a top back. One of Bryant or Folston or Ty Isaac (if he is really considering us again) would be nice.

We don't have room for all of them. I'd like the benefit of Whiskeys positional depth chart spreadsheet prior to answering. Off the cuff, I'd suggest we still have room for 3 with DF and CC coming back along with ZMart, CWatt and Cierre, someone feel free to correct me. From there, I'd take AQM, Redfield and the first to commit from the 3some of Treadwell, Folston and Bryant. With Redfield, the rest of the DB's that have committed and those currently on the roster, LJ Moore becomes unnecessary. With Foxxy and Carlo along w Moore, Grace, Deeb, Anzalone and some I'm sure to be missing, we're ok which makes T Johnson a luxury and with Cierre (in my scenario) we wouldn't need 1 of the 2 from Folston and Bryant. If you think T Johnson is better than Deeb, too bad, Deeb committed and he is in.

So out of Tredwell, Max Redfield, T. Folston, Greg Bryant, Trey Johnson, and LJ Moore, tell me the THREE you would take, and indicate the THREE you would turn down for one year of Carlo Calabrese.

And I will call you crazy.

I think he made his choice obvious. He takes AQM, Redfield, and then the first to commit out of Treadwell, Folston, Bryant, etc.

It is a stance I agree with, barring a decommitment or a medical scholarship / transfer. We will have stud recruits wanting to come to ND next year as well, trust me. I want to maintain what got us here - a nice mix of young talent and veteran leaders. Carlo is that.

Moore looks like an unlikely add even without all this debate, as the staff has seemingly cooled on L.J. since reeling in Luke Cole. "Mute" point.

I'm very happy with bringing in Cole Luke, Rashad Kinlaw, and Devin Butler for that position as well.

John Calipari only gets those elite freshman for one year. LJ Moore would be here, anywhere from 3-5 years. Not comparable.

Wasnt Jalen Brown a 4 star corner recruit and has he really been tearing it up for 4 years..... Nothing against Jalen, but the point is Carlo is a valuable player in our scheme and offers experience, just bc one has 4 stars doesnt mean they are going to dominate for 4 years or dominate at all. Carlo has value and Coach Kelly is about maximizing his chance to win Every year so he will keep proven players IMO.

Fair enough. My point is that we are in play and willing to accept ONLY elite players from this point on. Calabrese is not a good middle backer. Good middle backers start by their senior year. I'm sorry, I'm not hating, but I'm willing to take any of the player's I've mentioned for 4 years over a year with Calabrese, where I know I'm getting an above average run stopper and below average pass defender.

Edit: I would not be surprised if Anzalone (EE) takes snaps from Calabrese if the staff grants Calabrese a 5th year.

I thought he was a 4 star but you may be correct, he was just the first name to come to mind. I recognize Carlo isnt the greatest linebacker or flashy but he is good and offers experience in the scheme and yes I guess you could consider him a backup but Fox and him basically platoon that spot so it's not like he is parked on the bench if that was the case then I would agree with you and say goodbye to him.

And I'm not overly concerned with the board's perception (no offense). Almost all of this board (spare, IrishLax) also thought Riley wouldn't be allowed to ND to polish the helmets.

See above post, my point was that Carlo is able to play now and we are about winning now! Yes, its fun to think about grabbing all these recruits but not at the expense of the players who got us here I guess is my point. Carlo isnt Teo or the biggest difference on defense but their is a reason Diaco and Kelly play him and thats because they trust him more than anyone else on our roster at that spot so it baffles me that you guys want to toss them out so quickly for a player who probably wont contribute for 2-3 years.

Carlo has 46 tackles on the year, good for 7th on the team after missing the first game of the season. He's better than you give him credit and he splits time w Fox who is 4th on the team in tackles. I'm done w this one, feel free to carry on.

thought i heard a bradcaster of one of our games (maybe it was mayock) say that if you added up fox and carlos tackles (they pretty much were same postion so not on field together) it was more tacklses than mantis.
if true-(probaaly easy to check) then why break up whats working at a key postion?
i say keep them both.
helps to deal with the loss of manti both on and off the field IMO.

I think you guys underestimate what the MIKE does. I know BK has been singing Grace's praises (and I'm tickled shitless) but having Dan Fox and a first year starter WHO IS RUNNING THE ENTIRE DEFENSE isn't a recipe for success.

Remember when Te'o played MLB as a true frosh? Yeah he made tackles, but only because of his athletic ability. He was often out of position.
