#6 Notre Dame (7-2) vs. Syracuse (1-8)
2:30pm EST, November 19, 2005
Notre Dame Stadium

SOUTH BEND, Indiana (Ticker) -- Sixth-ranked Notre Dame attempts to move closer to a BCS bowl berth when it hosts sputtering Syracuse on Saturday.

In order to be eligible for one of the four lucrative BCS bowls, the Irish (7-2) need to win this one and defeat Stanford next week, plus finish in the top 12 of the final BCS standings. Notre Dame is 11th in the current standings.

The Irish have won three straight games since a 34-31 home loss to top-ranked Southern California on October 15. Last week, Notre Dame routed Navy, 42-21, to extend its NCAA-record winning streak over the Midshipmen to 42 games.

Junior Brady Quinn continued a Heisman Trophy-quality campaign by passing for 284 yards and four touchdowns and Maurice Stovall had eight catches for 130 yards and three TDs for the Irish, who had 505 total yards.

The Orange (1-8) have had an awful first season under Greg Robinson, losing their last seven games since a 31-0 triumph over lowly Buffalo on September 10.

Syracuse fell to 0-6 in the Big East Conference with a 27-0 home loss to South Florida last Saturday, when the Orange retired the No. 44 worn by Jim Brown, Floyd Little and Ernie Davis, among others.

Just about the only bright spot for Syracuse was senior safety Anthony Smith, who took over the national lead in interceptions with his sixth pick of the campaign.

Syracuse posted a 38-12 triumph over the Irish at the Carrier Dome in 2003 to even the all-time series, 2-2. They had not met in 40 years prior to that contest.

Well, I don't look for this game to be close at all, but I hope we can get some reps in for our youngsters so we can see what they've got. I'd like to see us build a nice lead and then let Hord and Grimes play some receiver.

Weis will probably give the Seniors that don't usually play a lot of time (its Senior Day) in the 2nd half. Maybe he'll even get some of the Sr 'look team' guys in garbage time. They'll probably run the ball alot but not os much that Walker gets more banged up.

Rooting Concepts -
tOSU @ Mich - If Michigan wins, the Wolverines would be the Big 10 champ if the Spartans beat Penn State. If Ohio State loses, they'll move down in the polls and be a less attractive BCS invite. ND would almost have to be ranked higher considering ND beat Michigan. If you can stand it, cheer on Michigan.

Penn State @ Michigan State - ND beat the Spartans, so a victory over Penn State would make that look better. Penn State is ranked higher than the Irish. If the Spartans and Wolverines win, the Irish will have defeated one of the BCS bowl teams. If you can stand it, hope for a Spartan win.

Auburn-'bama - Turn the SEC into a mess. Go Auburn.

So who has to win or lose for the Irish to go to the Orange Bowl?

I'd have to say Texas? Plus then, Miami would probably have to go to the Rose. That way the Orange Bowl would lose their automatic get first shot at the Irish.

What I want from this game, I want ND to run up the score, I want them to be up big early and not take their foot off the gas. I wan't them to make SU bleed, I want to this team of seniors to take out all of the frustrations of the Willingham era.

Well, statistically and on paper, it should certainly happen that way. I just want to see someone of the younger guys as they are really unknown quantities at this point.

I hate big mobile QB's. This is coming from a Packer fan that has to deal with Daunte Culpepper twice a year.

Oh, my gawd! Tough Cuse D! 3 and out! Short Kick! This is horrible!

Where's our defense????

Worst start of a game ever!

I miss Kmac's optimism.

I missed Kmac last week. Guess he's at the game again this week.

It's not a Game Day Thread with out Kmac's depression.

KMAC is looking for a strong pipe at the stadium right now to swing a rope from.

ROTFLMAO.

I hope he gets to read this thread and appreciate how much he's missed.

And I hope he has a sense of humor.

Questionable penalties, facemask and tripping but Cuse D is getting penetration.

Somebody get the Stadium EMT's over to Kmac's seat. We need an intervention now!

I was going to say the same thing. Take away his belt and shoelaces and any sharp objects he might have.

This defensive line of Syracuse is eating our offensive line alive. I don't think there are quicker defensive ends in the country, at least I haven't seen them.

Why was Quinn down on the busted passing play. He slipped and kept his balance by putting the ball on the ground. A few years ago, an Arkansas QB, Clint Stoner (spelling?) did the same and was called down in a big game, game turning play.

It is. Offense, Defense, and Special Teams, a team effort.
