Charlie Weis and the NFL

I saw this posted on cnnsi.com! This has me worried a little!

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/scorecard/10/24/truth.rumors.college/index.html

At least one NFL team has found out that it won't need the luck of the Irish to lure away Charlie Weis from Notre Dame. Weis' six-year contract at Notre Dame includes a modest $1.5 million buyout. The buyout means that, despite the fact that he has one of the country's most heralded recruiting classes coming in next season, Weis has positioned himself to leave Notre Dame after this season for the NFL if he so chooses. Should Weis cap Notre Dame's impressive season with a win over Tennessee and then another win in a major bowl game, he could vault himself into the No. 1 coaching prospect on the radar of NFL owners.

i just said it in another post, and i'll say it again. charlie's not going anywhere.

raise your hand if you think charlie weis, the owner of 4 super bowl rings, needed a year to prove himself at ND before taking a job as a pro head coach.

if you're hand is raised, take it and punch yourself in the side of the head.

even if he were in it for the money, he's making a comfortable $2 million a year in his ND salary alone. he's comfortable where he is, and he's looking to finish his career with the Irish. if you haven't already noticed, charlie is a little competitive, and he likes to win - it's that jersey attitude. he's going to win a national championship at ND JUST TO PROVE HE CAN DO IT. there's nothing left for him in the pro's. he's got nothing more to prove.

THANK YOU BIG IRISH FOR SAYING EVERYTHING THING THAT I WANTED TO SAY (AGAIN), but was too irratated to do it. To Brucejcarr's credit, he didn't SAY those things, he merely posted what "NFL.COM" was stating.

Again, another 'juicy rumor', to stir interest on the NFL.COM website.

Also, wasn't it nice to hear BQ come out and say "I'm DEFINITELY coming back next year", or words to that effect.....He'll pick up his Heisman next year (maybe NC....) and can have Matt Leinart carry his clipboard for him in the NFL.

Charlie hasnt publically lied about anything since he has been at ND..with that being said, i have heard him say numerous times:

"If i wanted to be an NFL coach i could have been last year" paraphraised from his opening presser

"I plan on staying here and seeing my son graduate with a degree and then retire and move to south carolina"

I dont think he is going anywhere, why leave the great gig you have now to take a crappy NFL opening...I dont think the New England job is going to open any time soon. I do think though that they need to give him more money and up his buyout with a new contract.

He won't leave for at least the next 6-10 years. He already has the best job in football and more national exposure than he could get in the pros. He's a man of his word. He said he'd stay and he will. He wants to bring ND back to the top on a CONSISTENT basis. With him wanting Charlie Jr. to get an ND degree and with the Hannah situation the way it is, living in Indiana where he does is very comfortable for the entire family. His health willing, Charlie will be at ND for a long time. The challenge is there for him and once he wins a NC the challenge gets tougher just to stay at that level. And as we all have seen, Charlie loves a challenge. Not to worry.

He went to ND. That is the biggest thing that says he won't leave.

People that went to other schools won't understand why, but that is the reality.

Eloquently put!

I gotta say as I posted in another topic, why would he want to leave ND, to go and coach a team like the Texans? I really feel that some of the luster has gone off of coaching in the NFL. Who wants to deal with the daily BS that you have to if you are a NFL coach?

I have a feeling the higher-ups at the NFL are a little displeased having Charlie in the college game. I mean, think about it, he's become such a draw, the NFL rarely lets talent like his go w/o a fight. While I don't think he'll leave, I think we'll have to learn to live w/ these kinds of rumors every year kinda like the Hawkeyes w/ Kirk Ferentz. Besides, who wants to go to the NFL just to get fired someday? NFL jobs end badly much more often than college jobs. In the NFL they say just go out and win every week, but its only in college that that's possible!

And if Charlie needs any more cash, I'm sure he'll find himself a couple of endorsements if the team keeps winning and his star keeps rising. Anyone remember the Tostito's commercial w/ Bill Parcels (when he was coaching the Jets)? I don't think Charlie has to worry about money ever again...

Once he tells them to kiss-off, I don't think we'll have to worry about it. It should, in fact, shore up our claim that he isn't leaving.

He won four superbowls. It might be neat to do it again as a head coach, but I think he would rather be Rockne reincarnate.

I listen to several sports radio shows and this was a hot topic of conversation on both the Dan Patrick and Jim Rome shows.

On the Jim Rome Show, he had Dan Shaunnesey (sp) on and they spoke about it. Dan said Weis would have no motivation to jump back to the NFL because he has several rings and has God-like status here in South Bend. He ended it by saying he hoped he stayed here in South Bend.

On the Dan Patrick Show, Dan spoke with Sean Salisbury who spoke with Weis during the ND/SC game. He said he gave him a hug and then asked Weis how they'd do. Weis said "We're gonna beat em, Sean." After they got passed that, he asked if he was here for the long haul and Weis say "yes" and then he asked if the NFL had missed their chance and he said "absolutely."

He then went on to say that he believes he wouldn't ever leave his dream job until he has at least one National Championship.
