This is really, really impressive stuff by Ohio State's band. I work with one of the tuba (err, sousaphone) players and was telling me about how slick this was going to be all summer.

Pretty cool stuff:

Unfortunately, the football team won and it looks they'll go 12-0. It makes me want to vomit; they are not good this year.

I too, despise pOSU. As a former member of the Band of the Fighting Irish, I have to tip my cap and say.....most impressive.

Love our band, reality is OSU and Texas A&M bands put ours to shame. I think our band has gotten more creative since Ken Dye came to town, but Hike, Notre Dame is not impressive to the untrained eye, despite being a technically impressive march step, and is really our one unique tradition. Those two bands are precision sharp, and their routines are creative and visually stunning to even the most disinterested of halftime spectator.

In my day, we would do a routine to the Rudy soundtrack every other freakin week. And on opposite weeks we would play Time Warp. Zzzzzzzzzz........

That was pretty damn cool. And especially being a huge game nerd, it made my nerd sensors go off.
I hate osu too, but they definitely have one of the best, if not the best, bands in the country.

Pretty awesome that you were a member of the band. I think ND's band is outstanding. My sister is in Penn State's Band, and I thought ND's band was better than them when I went to see the game at FedEx Field last year. They were very creative and sounded great.

Wow, that's probably the coolest thing I've ever seen a marching band do.

Little plug for my alma mater, the most impressive thing I've ever seen from a technical standpoint is the Circle Drill by the Pride of the Southland Marching Band. Skip to 2:35 on the video below if you've never seen it.

Thanks, it was a great experience.

I know ND has had more fun concepts and halftime shows over the last 10 years, definitely better than when I was in school. The schools I mentioned (I would probably throw USC in there as well) just seem to have a bigger, richer sound than ND projects, and their marching is just crisper, IMHO. Glad that the perception of the band is positive.

I would also say it is a big mistake having the band on the field level during the game. When you listen to those truly intimidating places to play in CFB, those bands are seated right in the heart of the stadium, allowing that sound to resonate down and around the bowl. Being seated in the corner, the students hear them fine, but the other end of the stadium loses a lot of the power and energy from the music. You lose a lot on tv as well.

You may lose 1,000 seats, but I would put the band below the press box and above those gold seats in a heartbeat. I think it is another necessary improvement in GameDay atmosphere.

Having them mic'd certainly helps. You can definitely hear the difference.

I think it's no surprise that the Super Mario part is my favorite.

Very awesome!

Woody Hayes called them "The Best Damn Band In The Land" once...they've been called that ever since.

Woody Hayes once choked an opposing player. Pretty tough to take anything he said seriously.... Serious character/judgement flaws. Just sayin'.
