No one responded to you yet, so I will jump in. What kind of .22LR you looking for and what do you want it for? If you are just plinking there are lots of great affordable options out there. I love the Ruger 10/22. It can just go basic or there are all sorts of fun, tacti-cool upgrades available. You can find a bunch of styles that look like AR's, but are .22LR. There are also some really fun match grade target 22's.

Really depends on what you want to use it for - plinking, target shooting, varmint control, self defense (not really recommended) or just for affordability.

Thank you Go Irish.

I have a 9mm Sig Sauer and a 12 Gauge Mossberg 590A1 with sure fire- so as far as home defense i am happy with those two guns.

So to answer your question, I would like to intro my kids to gun safety/shooting and it seems like a inexpensive way to go...so i guess it would be a plinking....with a second goal of a gun to shot small varmints. :)

Sorry i missed your question. I will second the ruger 10/22 statement. Great gun out the box and if you want to you can customize it to do/look like whatever you want. How old are your kids/when are you starting to train them?

Thank you Jade...

My kids are 12 and 9 both boys. I have always taught them the basics around, always assume a gun is loaded, never point a gun at someone, never pick up a gun that is on the ground etc. However now i want them to shoot...and understand the mechanics behind the gun. Any advise is appreciated.

I would definitely go 22 to start. When i start my boy out i will only give one round at a time instead of a full clip. Hopefully it will help them appreciate the ammo. He will start out with sights instead of a scope. I will also go with a fun reactive target like pop cans that will be obvious that they hit instead of just paper.

My Dad first took me out with a 10/22 when I was about 10. We would go to the supermarket and ask them for boxes of melons and fruit that was going to be thrown out and then we would drive way out in to the desert with about 1000 rounds of .22LR. We would shoot all afternoon and have a blast. You can really have some great memories with your kids while shooting and teaching them great lessons about gun safety at the same time.

Since you have the Mossberg, I would also encourage you to maybe pick up an inexpensive .410 or a 28 gauge. Never too early to start them out on the shotgun as well. Get them used to the bigger bang sticks!

Any recommendation on a 22LR?

A 10/22 is a decent choice for a starter 22 but I will throw another manufacturer into the ring. CZ. They make a fantastic bolt action .22 rifle. This is the nostalgic side of me coming out but IMO the first rifle you buy for your boys you want them to remember and cherish for their lives. Look no further than into a CZ military trainer rifle or a CZ 455 LUX. The wood is amazing, the weight of the rifle feels like a real "big boy" rifle and the accuracy is top notch. A CZ rifle will be more expensive but its worth it. I am not really a fan with learning on a semi auto as in my experience you can get some bad shooting habits. Where as a bolt or lever action you have to be more methodical in your approach to reloading, breathing, aiming and slowly squeezing the trigger . You should go check Ron Petersons and see if they have any new or used CZs for you to check out.

Thanks man. I'm just getting into bow hunting and have a few hunts planned in Nov that I'm pretty excited for. I've already upgraded to a tubeless peep sight and am hoping to get a Truglo sight for Christmas.

You can't go wrong with a Mathews either though, just a little out of my price range right now. Good luck this season!

Thanks Peoria, good luck to you too! I don't think I will be able to get up north this yr for whitetail so I will have to head out down here one week and stick a pig. Like the AR I got a steal with the Mathews. I found shop that was loosing it right to sell Mathews and waited till after season when the always have a 20% off sale so I got a Reezen 6.5 for a 100 off plus an additional 20%.

Btw did you see I posted pics of the AR a page back

Well you are just the little deal hunter aren't you!? Haha, I just watched a video of that bow and boy is it quiet! Nice looking too. I'm trying to hook up with a buddy of mine to get down to Arkansas for a hog hunt one of these days. Seems like a good time.

That AR looks great man. I, like Jade, love the flat top. I'm not a big fan of the carry handles. What length is that barrel?

I try to be frugal, lol. Yeah the bow is smooth, quiet and fast. If you ever come down to Florida hit me up I'll join ya for a hog hunt. The barrel is 16in, I was gonna have him cut it down and put a Krink flash suppressor to hit that legal 16 but that cost a lil extra and like I said...I'm frugal lol.

Frugal is the way to go. Sometimes it gets hard with guns though because I like to support local shops, so I want to buy my guns and what not from them, but it's so much cheaper online. Choices, choices.

16 inch works. Keeping it longer like that will make it a little more accurate I suppose.

I'll definitely keep that in mind if I head down to Florida. Thanks man.
