Thanks again...

Honestly, after watching the first half again... Everett did NOT look as bad as I remembered.

He missed some throws, sure, and that int was just a careless/lazy pass, but he wasn't playing horrible

That being said,

I understand why Kelly put Rees in.

Golson was a couple bad plays/turnovers away from having his confidence crushed in a big home game, and Kelly needed a familiar, comfortable, and capable guide for this offense, hence Rees.

We needed Tommy to bring this ship into harbor for the W

Exactly. To some extent the coaching staff had to feel really comfortable with how the defense was playing to know that only 13 points was going to put them in position to win. There is no way Kelly risks losing this game (again) by using overly conservative play calling if he thought at least another score or two was needed.

Also no way you give Denard the ball back at the end with a chance to tie/win. Great play call with Eifert in man coverage to maintain possession. Even if he didn't catch it you have to be aggressive in that situation because the entire universe would have guessed a run was coming on that play and I don't want to imagine what would have happened had Denard gotten the ball back with less than 2 mins to go. You would have liked to see that kind of play calling earlier mixed in the obvious running formations Kelly was using but it wasn't necessary to win with how the d was playing.

Agreed,

And to further the point. You have a RS freshman in Golson in his 4th start in a MAJOR game, at home.

He's already shaken a little bit by the confusing defensive looks given by the Michigan D, and he throws a lousy pass that's picked in the endzone.

With a young kid like that, a couple more mistakes of any kind and his confidence could have been shot for the night, so it really is a luxury to be able to throw out a veteran leader like Tommy to take over and say, "I'll take it from here kid, you'll get em next week"

At least that's how I saw it.

Things I noticed...

Golson didn't do as bad as his numbers say or as bad as everyone acted. I didn't get to see him play any until now. He threw 3 bad balls. The two picks and his over throw of Davaris. His first pick was a fantastic read (at first I thought he threw into double coverage then threw a second look I see the window he was hitting and knowing how fast Chris is, that could have been a TD) he just threw a bad ball. The overthrow is just another bad ball. On the drive before his second pick though. He's seeing it. Golson checks down to Riddick, hits Davaris on another good read. The pick...he either didn't see the second UM defender, he was throwing a jump ball to TJ (who was shoved and unable to make the jump), or he meant to throw it away and it just slipped. What I'm getting at is that Golson sees everything really quite well he was just off throwing it. I'm confident he can start nailing his targets like he is capable of and when he does, watch out. His only other problem is he is sometimes a little ancy in the pocket.

Now there's a segue to Tommy's first half performance! (Warning: You may not be happy about some of the things I say about Tommy, but it's nothing against him. I like the kid. Glad we won, he played his part, yada yada.) The one thing I like about Rees' first half performance is how calm he is in the pocket. He trusts his line to hold up. Now where most see good, I see some very frightening things in Tommy's first throw. Tommy doesn't see Davaris when he is wide open in the middle of the field, he throws it to him LATE LATE LATE (especially considering Tommy's inability to put a lot of zip on a ball) and is nearly intercepted. I had so many nightmarish flashbacks flying through my head as that ball sputtered through the air. Now onto the TJ Jones catch. I assure you, that is what that was. That was ALL TJ. I'll give Tommy the credit for the read, but what in the hell is that throw? That's one of those throws Denard got away with on us last year. There was no safety over top of TJ. Put that thing in front of him and let him get it! That's a TD all the way. The Riddick completion was great. Should have been a TD. Tommy overthrows a wide open Daniels in the endzone not a terribly easy throw like the TJ one would have been though. Tommy's last throw of the half, he targets Eifert which isn't bad at all. No crap given on that throw. It got us the first down because of the PI call.

TL;DR version: Golson made great reads, a few bad balls. Tommy gets a mixed review. Some BAD throws turned out to be what worked for him. Still don't like (or understand) how Tommy's ball always lacks velocity and how he makes poor/dangerous decisions.

Props to you Outinthebend! Is the stream from nbcsports.com working for anyone else? I keep trying to watch it, but it never works and keeps telling me "sorry" and that there is some problem with the stream. Any suggestions?
