Hip injury ends year for St. Ignatius' Parris

Monday, October 03, 2005
Eddie Dwyer Plain Dealer Reporter
St. Ignatius' Robby Parris said he knew immediately something was wrong.

Parris, one of the premier wide receivers in the Midwest and one of the top two-sport athletes (football and basketball) in Ohio, sustained a season-ending dislocated hip from a jarring tackle during the fourth quarter of the Wildcats' 29-26 loss to Massillon at Parma's Byers Field on Saturday night.

With St. Ignatius leading, 26-21, Parris -- a senior who accepted a football scholarship from Notre Dame this past summer -- attempted to make a leaping catch across the middle near the Massillon 40-yard line. Tigers junior defensive back Brian Gamble came racing across the field and hit Parris as he was catching the ball, knocking the ball loose and forcing Parris to land awkwardly on his legs.

Play was stopped with 7:20 remaining as Parris received treatment on the field. He was put on a stretcher and taken by ambulance to Parma Community General Hospital, which is across the street from Byers Field.

Parris underwent a surgical procedure Saturday night to have his hip put back in place. After more X-rays and tests, he was released from the hospital on Sunday.

"There was a bone chip, but they said that shouldn't be a problem," said Parris, who probably will have to go through four or five months of rehabilitation. "I am supposed to be getting together with someone from the Browns [for the rehabilitation], but I don't know when that will be."

St. Ignatius coach Chuck Kyle said the good news was that there was no fracture and that the doctors were able to perform the procedure within 45 minutes of the injury.

As the 6-4, 190-pound Parris was being taken to the ambulance on the stretcher, Gamble came running across the field to wish him well. Parris reached up and patted Gamble on the top of his head.

"He told me I'm a good player," Parris said.

Parris finished his senior season with 32 catches for 676 yards and 12 touchdowns in six games.

He was having an outstanding season. Does anyone know if this is a very serious injury? Will it be hard for him to come back from this type of injury? This is one recruit that can step in and contribute next year, hopefully this injury doesn't set him back.....

I believe he plays basketball as well. This is not good, especially since he plays a position ND will be in need of.

Hips are pretty bad...it would have been better if he had broken his leg.

Hip injuries can cause nerve and bone damage. Bo Jackson sustained a hip injury which ended his football and baseball careers.

ha! there's a rather lengthy debate in another thread regarding the NCAA's medical redshirt option and whether or not McKnight would qualify.

A hip dislocation is worse than a broken leg? Will this affect his scholarship offer from the Irish? Or does it simply mean that he'll be rehabbing up until summer camp?

Quick question, is Hord redshirting? He hasn't appeared in a game yet and was more highly recruited than Grimes who has found a good amount of PT for a freshman.

yeah a Hip dislocation is worse than a Broken leg. luckily they did the surgery 45 minutes after the injury, he'll have to redshirt and rehab and gain some weight...im sure he'll still be quite successful at ND

Much Worse

Much Worse

A dislocated hip is much worse than a broken leg. A broken leg means the player is back at 100% by this time next year at the latest (barring a really horrific break). A dislocated hip means more like 2 years to be completely 100% back. Bo Jackson(career ending) and Rosie Colvin(still isn't quite right 2+ years later) come to mind.

Hopefully Hord will see the field this year, we're gonna need him to step up next year.

A hip dislocation is MUCH worse. Trust me, I saw/heard it on the rugby pitch and I've never heard an athlete cry/scream like that. Let's hope & pray that he heals up, for his sake.

Must get Jackson and Austin now. Simple as that. Two more WR recruits will have to do.

I doubt we'll get both of them...that would be quite the feat. but I dont see how we could not land one of them though. I personally like Jackson myself

I think their chances for both are legit. The only other WR they've offered is David Ausberry and he's a longshot.

Walls will get time at WR, so maybe one of these two will suffice.

I'm really glad Jeff S has another year of eligibility, that will give Parris some time to heal. I think a hip injury would be much worse had it happened to a Gallup or West, because those guys rely on their speed and athletic ability. At 6'4 Parris is more of a possesion receiver, so hopefully he'll be able to come back from this.

I agree that Austin and Jackson are important especially now with the uncertainty of Parris.

Besides Ausberry we have offered Riley Cooper and Damon McDaniel but I think we have little chance at these guys.

Austin has been offered by Miami as of last week and he seemed impressed by that. I believe Jaskson is our best shot but you never know the way Weis seems to impress all of these recruits. Could get both Jackson and Austin.

Who is Damon McDaniel?

Riley Cooper sounds like he has baseball in his blood and the Florida schools on his mind. He's been quiet among all of the ND offers.

Ausberry is the best of the bench in question, but his interest in ND is very low. They haven't really been all that hot after him either. I believe that is Coach Polian's territory out there.

I know this may sound insensitive, but since he hasn't offically signed a LOI, is there any chance that Notre Dame pulls his scholarship offer to give to a healty body?

I doubt it. That's not a Notre Dame thing to do. They have more class and loyalty than that. Besides, Landri was in bad shape before stepping foot on campus, that one turned out OK. Reviews are that if Parris gets healthy again, he can be a special WR. He was tearing up some very strong competition. I think he'll be worth the wait. If he never heals properly, there is, I believe an exemption where the school gives him a non-athletic scholarship and the team gets that scholarship back.

This is what I wasn't sure of. That makes logical sense and there would be no point in pulling it if that were the case.

Jiggs---Damon Mcdaniel is a great WR from Virginia Beach, Va who was offered by ND early on. He has not chosen yet but appears to want to stay in the East and has offers from Miaim, FSU, and a host of others. He and Percy Harvin are the two big WRs in Virginia.

No way they pull Rob's schollie, that would be a very bad thing to do. The surgery only took 45 minutes, and he was home the next day, and he can start rehabbing in 4 to 5 months. If anything he'll redshirt and be ready to go his 2nd season. This kid is well worth the wait, he's unbelievable from what I hear.

So many players come back from serious injuries nowadays. People said McGahee's career was over, now he's a stud RB in the NFL.......

I'm not finding him with an ND offer anywhere. I did look him up though. Nice. His video is very impressive.

Parris will be back. He has a great deal of time to heal. He'll be okay.

These questions always come up when someone is injured like Parris. Anyone remember Damon Peters during the Holtz era? He was a great ND recruit who broke his neck in a swimming accident during the summer before coming to ND. Holtz made it clear that his schollie was in tact even though he would never play football again. That is the way ND does things. Weis is no different that Holtz.

from the buckeye board

Early diagnosis is no bone or cartilage damage and he is expected to make a full recovery after rehab according to his brother.
