can't seem to find too much about McKnight's status, although the excerpt below taken from tsn.com's varsity report. i thought there was supposed to be an update out today....nothing seems to be popping up.

- Notre Dame WR Rhema McKnight will miss this week's game at Michigan State and, judging by how his knee injury looked when it was suffered, he could be out for some time. Jeff Samardzija should take his place.

Just found this on espn.com:

Notre Dame Irish: Wide receiver Rhema McKnight will not play against Michigan State this week because of an injured right knee.

"He is not lost for the season," Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis said Tuesday. "He has a procedure that will keep him out this week."

The junior has five catches for 69 yards this season. He scored a touchdown against Michigan on Saturday.

I suppose the good news is that he would qualify for a medical redshirt if he WERE out for the season.

Well its good news if he's not out for the year. I really think he was about to flourish under Weis hopefully this doesn't set him back

I'd say if Rhema was smart he would red shirt and come back next year at this point.

weis has said he is "DAY TO DAY but will not play this week".......why would we want to redshirt him?

I had a feeling this was the case. Glad he's not out for the season. they will need him for Purdue, then a week's rest, then SC.

He cannot redshirt...he already played in two games this year.

He could still get a medical redshirt, I believe because he only saw action in 1.5 games. I was just suggesting redshirting because it looks as if he will miss at least 2.5 games, so essentially 3 games he will miss and who knows if he will be 100% the rest of the season.

There is no possible way he will get an extra year. If the injury had occured in the first half of the Pitt game, he'd still have a slim chance. It rarely happens. Jason White was a different scenario....quite bizarre actually.

Actually quite a few players have got medical redshirts after playing in one and even 1.5 games, it has to do with a % of the season played.

i read somewhere that the injury had to occur within the first three games of the season. don't know if that's accurate or not.

Does anyone feel that CW is not telling the whole truth here? Part of me is Excited that McKnight will come back at some point during the season, but part of me is saying that the injury is worse than stated and that CW is saying this so that teams will game plan for McKnight. I don't know fellas! I hope that is the first scenario though.

yeah I agree, seems like he is downplaying the injury. just sitting out one week? doubt it. like I have said in other threads I wouldnt expect him back until after the bye week at least. So Sept 10-Oct 15. 4 weeks to heal.

He could get a medical red-shirt, period. CW is saying basically that he isn't going to go this route by his "he will play this season" statement.

If he got a medical redshirt, it would be the biggest NCAA miracle in the history of college football.

I had teammates that DESERVED a medical redshirt and didn't receive one. McKnight went through summer practice, played in one full game and half of another. No way. It would be unjust to others who haven't gotten a RS when they should have. And no, he can't have one and here is why -

Per ncaa.org:

Each student is allowed no more than four seasons of competition per sport. If you were not a qualifier, you may have fewer seasons of competition available to you. You should know that NCAA rules indicate that any competition, regardless of time, during a season counts as one of your seasons of competition in that sport. It does not matter how long you were involved in a particular competition (for example, one play in a football game, one point in a volleyball match); you will be charged with one season of competition.

My teammate my senior year, also a WR, blew an ACL on the OPENING KICKOFF in the first game of the year and the NCAA told him to go scratch himself when he applied for an extra fifth year.

One play.

What was the situation with Jason White and countless others who got another year of playing time? I believe that if you play under a % of time before being injured you are eligible to apply for an extra year, now whether that is granted or not is another story.

Hey, I saw on ESPN that Shelton is getting the start in McKnight's place. Anyone else suprised by that? I'd figure the top 2 recievers would be Stovall and Samardzija w/ the way they've played so far & Rhema going down on the injury. Or did I just miss something?

It says right there, "one play in football". You can get hurt on the opening kickoff and there could be a re-kick due to a penalty and you're still done.

My girlfriend played D-I soccer and got hurt in a spring scrimmage. Thus, she was out all of her junior year and was granted a fifth year.

4 years of playing eligibility is the bottom line. White had four years, but two medical redshirts. I can't remember the situation, but it was bizarre.

Most guys don't get it even when they should. If McKnight were to apply for one, hypothetically b/c he won't, I'd be willing to bet a morgage that he'd be denied.

Isn't Shelton behind McKnight and Samardzija behind Stovall on the two deep?

Shelton has a lot of heart and he's a former walk-on, just like Rudy. Even though he averaged 20+ yards per catch last season on long balls, but I don't like him for normal percision routes that Weis likes so much. I hope he works out.

Well you got the heart right but that's all.

1) Matt Shelton came to ND on a football scholarship not as a walkon.

2) Matt Shelton set an ND ALL-TIME record for ypc last season. BTW, you're at least 5 yards short.

3) He hasn't played much this season as he's been rehabbing from post season ('04) surgery.

4) Why would Weis waste 4.29 speed on short routes when he has a bunch of 6'-5" receivers that can do that?

AP release on ND recruits

AP-NY-02-07-01

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - The 19 high school football players that signed with Notre Dame on Wednesday might not mean as much as the two who didn't. Shaun Cody, a highly sought after defensive lineman from Hacienda Heights, Calif., signed with Southern Cal; and Lydell Ross, a tailback from Tampa, Fla., went with Ohio State after verbally committing to the Irish last month. ``Sometimes in recruiting you end up kind of like in the football season, you always think about the game you lost; sometimes the conversation always goes toward the one you didn't get,'' coach Bob Davie said. ``But I'm excited about the 19 we signed. Obviously we didn't sign everyone we would have liked to have signed. I don't think there's anyone on the country that signed every player they would have hoped.'' The strength of the recruiting class lies in the linebackers: Corey Mays (6-foot-1, 234 pounds) of Chicago's Morgan Park High School, Zachary Giles (6-4, 285) of Marshfield, Mass., Brandon Hoyte (6-0, 219) of Parlin, N.J., and Justin Tuck (6-5, 215) of Kellyton, Ala. ``I doubt we've had a better group of linebackers than the four we committed in this class,'' Davie said. Mays is the biggest name in the group, rated among the top 100 high school players by several recruiting analysts. ``I think he can be a star. He's got great explosiveness, great quickness,'' Davie said. The Irish recruit with the most accolades, though, is Mark LeVoir, a tight end from Eden Park, Minn., who may move to tackle with the Irish. LeVoir was a first team prep All-America selection by USA Today. ``He is a giant,'' Davie said. ``He is 310 pounds, 6-foot-7 but really light on his feet. He has some unique skills.'' The Irish also signed three defensive backs: safety Quentin Burrell and cornerbacks Dwight Ellick and Lionel Bolen. Cornerback was a problem at times last season and Brock Williams, who could have come back for a senior season, decided to make himself eligible for the NFL draft. Davie said its unlikely any of the three will have an immediate impact. The biggest disappointment was at defensive line, but Davie said big defensive linemen who are ``difference makers'' always are hard to find. The Irish did sign two defensive lineman Brian Beidatsch (6-4, 265) from Milwaukee and Jeff Thompson (6-5, 265) from nearby Penn High. The other signees were wide receivers Carlos Campbell and Matt Shelton, running backs Ryan Grant, Corey Jones and Marcus Wilson, offensive linemen Zachary Giles, Darin Mitchell and Dan Stevenson, tight end Matt Root and Rashon Power-Neal, who played running back, wide receiver, linebacker and safety in high school. Most recruiting services had the Irish ranked somewhere between ninth and No. 16, although Davie said he doesn't think its possible to rank such things. ``None of us know for sure exactly what we have, if we're honest,'' he said. ``I always refer to is as having that Christmas present. You have that thing wrapped and you think it's pretty good. But we won't know until August, and it will probably be a long time after that until we know for sure.''

That's interesting, b/c that's something else ESPN got wrong. They said he was a walk-on yesterday. Another mistake by the 4-letter network.

And is that how it goes? They have different guys behind each starter? That makes sense why he'd get the nodd over Samardzija, although were I Weis I'd probly have Samardzija behind both starters on the depth chart w/ the way he's played thus far, but that's why Charlie's the coach and I'm not so I'm sure this will work out better.

While he as a scholarship player, he was the #100 ranked WR that year. I think Shelton was offered to walkon at some schools like homestate Tennessee who didn't offer. The only offers I have listed in my Class of '05 database for Shelton are ND, OSU, VU, MEM, and DUKE. He camped at MISS without an offer and had interest in Arkansas that wasn't reciprocated.

Shelton had a knee injury in high school which limited PT and I suspect some coaches weren't willing to take the chance. Some of the gurus projected him as a CB.

SBT has Samardzija and Stovall as starting - see quote below:

"Junior Jeff Samardzija and senior Maurice Stovall are listed as the starting wide receivers for Saturday's home opener with Michigan State. Freshman David Grimes, whose brother Carl plays for the Spartans, figures to see increased playing time."

So Shelton isn't starting?

That would be the case -- but as you know, that means nothing with this offense because of all the multiple sets. I assume that in a 1 back set, Shelton is in. Grimes and Hord maybe in 4 or 5 receiver set.

Has Hord seen the field yet? I thought they might be red-shirting him.
