Jigga, it seems like you have become much more knowledgeable about soccer now. I'm not sure, but didn't you say your wife was forcing you to watch the games.

I tell you, soccer is a great sport if people give it a chance. :soccer:

Easy there Punishment....FIANCEE. I haven't been annexed yet.

I watched several games with her, mostly USA and Italy. I've gotten a much better grip on the strategy and rules. Lots of quesionable calls, though. There is a fine line between some of these calls. Thus, lots of controversy.

I have to agree with you. I'm one of these guys that would love a 17-14 football game.

But Americans need excitment....fun and gun offenses, 500 foot home runs and the Dallas Mavericks scoring 150 points.

The defensive element of soccer fascinates me. Hence, my favorite guys being Onyewu(USA), Zambrotta (he wears #19...how can I not like him?) and Cannavaro.

Sorry, I meant fiancee.

I feel the same way about needing excitement. But I grew up with soccer as my first sport, and I loved it. A part of me enjoys it because it brings back a lot of memories of friends and family gathering to watch a game. I tell you man, nothing could bring my family together like a soccer game. We always used to joke around that we would have better attendance at a gathering to watch a soccer game, than at a wedding.

Like my favorite announcer, Norberto Longo, used to say. Bendito sea el futbol.

Materazzi admits he insulted Zidane before head butt

MILAN, Italy -- Marco Materazzi acknowledged he insulted Zinedine Zidane before the French captain head-butted him in the World Cup final, but repeated his denial that he called Zidane a "terrorist."

"I did insult him, it's true," Materazzi said in Tuesday's Gazzetta dello Sport. "But I categorically did not call him a terrorist. I'm not cultured and I don't even know what an Islamic terrorist is."

A Paris-based anti-racism group issued a statement Monday saying Materazzi had called Zidane, whose parents emigrated to France from Algeria, a "dirty terrorist."

FIFA announced Tuesday it would open a disciplinary investigation into the circumstances of Zidane's head butt.

"FIFA will open a disciplinary investigation into Zidane's conduct to enable it to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident as exactly as possible," world soccer's governing body said in a statement.

Zidane and Materazzi exchanged words in extra-time of Sunday's final in Berlin. Seconds later, Zidane lowered his head and rammed Materazzi in the chest, knocking him to the ground. Zidane was ejected from the match.

"I held his shirt for a few seconds only, then he turned round and spoke to me, sneering," the Italian defender told the newspaper. "He looked me up and down, arrogantly and said: 'If you really want my shirt, I'll give it to you afterwards.'"

The 32-year-old Inter Milan player did not elaborate on exactly what he said to Zidane.

"It was one of those insults you're told tens of times and that always fly around the pitch," he said.

Neither one will say exactly what was said. Zidane won't tell his agent and Materazzi isn't saying either.

Not much to talk about now after the fact. Still, what would possess the captain of a team to do such a foolish thing?

The problem is that they both have a history of tempers.

This was not the first time ZeZi has headbutted a player. In France 98, ZeZi missed 3 games during the WC because of suspensions.

The Italian player has also been extremely dirty, and one time was suspended 3 times in one season. He got so bad that a lot of Italians were requesting that he not be on the team because he would give the team a black eye.

Soccer brings out strong emotions, and strange reactions.
