Why can't we rush the field?

The field was rushed three times while I was an undergrad from 1991 to 1995.

The first was following the Penn State game in 1992, the Snow Bowl. Two ranked teams, end of a series. The game was won in the last second and the student section emptied out. I ended up on the goal post after multiple tries.

The second was following the #1 vs #2 matchup with Florida State in 1993. The crowd rushed the field before the Florida State players could get to their locker room. All the fans had to be funneled out through the tunnel past the unappreciative glares of the FSU players and staff. For what seemed like a half hour we mockingly sang their war chant as throngs of fans filled out. I think I ended up on the goalpost for that one too. I was somewhat lighter at the time.

The third and final time unfortunately came the following week. After an epic comeback fell short, the Boston College fans rushed Notre Dame Stadium as the student section sat in horrified disbelief. We had to watch as our NC season slipped away and the annoying BC upstarts danced around with their NBC - No Better Catholics banner.

That last one was pretty bad, and left a burning hate in my gut, but the first two were memories that still bring a smile to my face.

ND students, you'll know when the time comes. Just Go!

I understand the team was down and that was the year of the Sullivan tragedy (right?), but it was UTAH (who just came off of a 40-point beating). And apparently they didn't actually rush it as we view 'rushing the field', so it's moot.

Sorry if I offended you, I just don't think any of us want ND fans rushing the field for a win over UTAH to be how this decade of Irish football is remembered.

I don't think you understand how much we needed that win as a program or as a student body. That was about the most emotional game I've experienced.

Utah was in the NC discussion until the week before.

And yes it was the first win after Declan.

ND will also never rush the field like you view;I doubt we would even against a #1 team. The ushers were helping people at USC (in my section) and at Utah. It's a liability thing. Then again, maybe we would against USC. In 2009, Weis even said he would pay for the goal posts personally. So close.
