Who Said It?

I don't think Ron Paul himself has ever said that 9/11 was allowed by the government, but if he did, it would destroy any credibility he had as a human being, much less a serious political candidate.

I watched the debate that came up when I did the Google search about it. From what I saw, he said that American policies before 9/11 had an impact in creating the hatred for the US that fueled the 9/11 attack. He has repeated denied saying the US caused 9/11, but has gone on the record as saying US policy in the Middle East has caused hatred towards us, and that hatred contributed to the 9/11 attacks. Take that FWIW.

I'm not sure how I feel about that, and I'm not sure how you feel about it, but it's not a theory to be dismissed out of hand. No one is to blame for 9/11 except the terrorists themselves, but perhaps we made ourselves a bigger target than was necessary, is what he seems to be saying. Again, not sure what I think about that, but definitely not something to dismiss if you would like to try to avoid other attacks. We all know our security wasn't good enough, maybe other things weren't also up to snuff. I see nothing un-American about that, but again, political considerations like this are so complicated. I'm an engineer, I don't have the background in politics, but I do have an appreciation for complex problems with complex answers, and the folly of thinking you always have the right answer.

I don't know if I want our country to reclaim its isolationists roots, as Ron Paul advocates, but I definitely think he has the right approach towards the federal government. Namely, that we need less of it, and what we have of it should stick to the constitution.

It's like buying a car on a loan and saying you got a raise.

That makes no sense. Please tell me you've never heard anyone use this logic.

That's exactly what an unfunded tax cut is. It's a loan against future income.

That's your opinion. Yeah, it COULD lead to that. And Notre Dame COULD blow out their next four opponents. In a perfect world, the next Pres. would repeal all the non-military spending that Bush signed off on & extend his tax cuts. I know that's not realistic, but a man can dream. Tax cuts stimulate the economy, incr. productivity & give people more money to spend.

Tax cuts are a short term boon to the economy, but if not followed with spending cuts...MEANING if they are not paid for. Then they are a drain.

My mom is an ER Doc. She's a 5th generation doctor. My sisters are both in Med school. They too will end up being well to do Docs.

This is where I'm confused. You said you were below middle income class growing up yet your mother is a physician & your dad was a politician. We are pretty much the same age (you were born around '70 right?) & grew up in the '70s & '80s. With that in mind, what do you consider as middle income class for that era?

She was not a doc until I was much older. I was around for the PhD, Med School, and Residency years. She was not in full-on doctoring until I was un high school. The previous 14 years were not prosperous in anyway shape or form. I remember when we finally got to own a single family house, instead of apartment or duplex...I thought that was the height of being "rich".

Most politicians have done all you state above...

Again, that's based on your experience & opinion.

Actually, go look at their bios. Most were well off before they made it to congress. It really helps to be rich when running for office.

He has very little chance of winning the nomination, but this whole discussion is why I like Ron Paul. He the only candidate I see who actually promotes LESS bureaucracy as the way to solve many of our economic problems (re: colossal deficit) and while I'm not sure how well all his ideas would work in practice, it seems like they would be a step in the right direction. I also like how he thinks we could actually abide by the Constitution and actually be all right.

edit: he also has little chance of winning if he does manage to get the nomination methinks.

he's a nutbag...but he's a damn fun one...I love seeing him in the debates
