When JLS gets the boot...

is Steve Mariucci the new MSU coach. I've seen this idea popping up in a number of reports/articles...SI and a few internet sites.

Him and Tom Izzo are very good friends and it seems as if it would be a very good fit for the former 49ers and Lions coach (not to mention the university, which needs a real coach so bad it isn't funny).

I think if this is the case than why wait...give JLS the boot after the scUM and O$U games (which they will lose, no don't in my mind) and move on with Mariucci.

I know this probably wouldn't happen, but thoughts on the matter.

Very interesting thought here...would be a good fit. I could see Mariucci making a good college coach.

He took over a depressed team in need of a energy boost in Detroit. What makes you think he can get it done in EL?

I think he fits the head-coach mold much better than throwing your hat around like a 5 year-old (Johnny L). He knows how to groom a QB and pick him up after mistakes are made...in the ND game, when Stanton threw the INT for TD, he just put his head down like a little kid going to get a spanking from his hot-headed father instead of hustling off the field with his head up...willing to get to get together with his coach to figure out how the next drive was going to win the game, which is where Mariucci would do well. I'll never forget when Mooch pulled off a stunning last second win over the Packers when he was with the 49ers. Some coaches having winning attitudes and some franchises (Detroit) are incapable of pulling their buns outta the fire...they revert to dropping their heads and putting their tails between their legs if things don't immediately improve.

I think Sparty should drop football entirely. It would save the university a lot of embarassment, and it would end all these stupid "Big Televen" jokes.

Wow. What is it with Michigan wanting to either keep teams out of the Big Ten or kick them out once they get in?

He is the name that keeps getting tossed around. I think he would make a better college coach than he did a pro coach, since he is one of those rah-rah types. I could definetely see him being good at recruiting.

One way or the other, this is the end of the road for John L. it would seem. I think he'll get to finish the year out though, those midseason firings don't seem to happen quite as often in college as they do in the pros. But if its not Mariucci, it'll be some no-name coordinator (which obviously isn't necessarily a bad thing-all great coaches have to get their start somewhere). At least Mariucci would bring some instant credibility to the program though.

He was a college coach at one time, he coached at Cal in 1996. He had a 6-6 record before going to the 49ers.

Born in Iron Mountain, Michigan, Mariucci was a three-time All-America quarterback at Northern Michigan University. He began his coaching career at his alma mater (1978-79), and moved to Cal State Fullerton (1980-82) and Louisville (1983-84). He joined the USC staff in 1986, then moved to Cal in 1987. In 1990-91, he served as the Bears' offensive coordinator. Mariucci became the head coach at Cal in 1996 and guided the squad to a 5-0 start and a berth in the Aloha Bowl.

Actually here's my take. ND and MSU trade places. That's right, MSU becomes independant takes the NBC TV contract and ND joins the Big 10. On condition that John L stays and that all the MSU home games on NBC are played opposite Jerry Springer. Sound like a plan?

No deal. ND in the Big Ten would be interesting, but I'd rather they stay independent.

Mooch also groomed Brett Favre at Green Bay.

Yeppers...good point. I didn't go into specifics with how Mooch can groom a QB, but being a Packers fan since the early 90's, I can def agree with Mooch throwing in a helping hand with Brett Favre. Mooch has helped to groom several QB's...all excelling under his pointers: Favre, Young, and Garcia.
