I'm not sure I agree with you, Illustrious Web Master. I don't think you can equate being the Best School in Cali with the Best School in Indiana. That's like saying the best opera singerin Paris is equivalent to the best opera singer in Warsaw.

These Cali schools are better than ND & any other school in Indiana: Stanford, UC Berkeley, Cal Tech, UCLA.

That's right: ND would be the fifth best school in California.

In Indiana, ND is one of the 3 best undergrad schools. For grad programs its IU that is stellar.

I'd give ND a #4 in California.

1) Stanford
2) Cal Tech
3) UC Berkley
4) ND
5) UCLA
6) USC

That's based on acadmic reputation though...

What the #1-#3 schools have that ND does not have (which help them academically) are graduate programs that are tops in the world.

ND is really and undergrad school with a few really good grad programs. MBA and Law come to mind.

But I am biased of course since I have an MBA from ND.

This is why I rank UCLA above ND--grad and professional programs. To me, that's more important than stuff like undergrad SAT scores.

But these comparisons are always difficult. It's fair, I think, to compare Berkeley, Michigan, and Virginia--huge state universities with the full range of graduate and professional programs. It's also fair to compare Vanderbilt, Rice, and Tulane--private Us in the urban south. But when you start comparing Northwestern to Texas, it's apples and oranges.

I think some of you are confusing Cal-Poly-SLO with Cal Tech in Pasadena. No comparison there.

How many high schooler football players (that could be playing on Sundays) are looking at a school thinking, "oh they have a better grad school program." Not many at all if any at all. These players are looking only at undergrad programs.

Maison is right. Its the graduate programs that bring a university more prestige. That is why students in graduate programs get better treatment from their universities. Even at ND, the graduation has everybody graduating from a graduate program sit on the hardwood floor in the Joyce Center, while all the undergrads are out sitting in the stands with the parents and guests.

More like 8 post about Marc Tyler, and 28 about which schools are academically superior.:)

Even when I lived in California, SC was never considered an academic institution. It was Stanford, UCLA and then several of the Cal schools including Berkeley, Poly, then finally USC. If you're not the premier institution in your state, and USC isn't, then it doesn't compare to Notre Dame that is the best high education instituion in Indiana, with Rose Hulman Institute of Technology following right behind.

svo, you have good points more often than not, but this is something i just can't agree with completely. you're information is correct. usc isnt the premier but you not impressing anyone by saying nd is better bc it's the premier school in indiana. indiana and california academic infrastructures are not even comparable. if usc were in arizona it would be the premier but then that wouldnt be too impressive, like indiana.

anyways, my point is that it's still a very good school regardless. i dont know why we're all fighting about the level of academics here. it's just hard to see people rip on the school ALL THE TIME and claim nd is the end all be all of academia. yes we're a highly ranked school but that doesnt mean usc students are retards. being second to cal, stanford, and ucla isnt bad. i dont like anything about usc. i would rather kill myself than go to school there. but the trash talking and lame reasons like comparing in-state status between indiana and cali have to go.

i agree with punishment....let's actually talk about marc now

I find it kind of odd that USC and ND are in the lead for his services when his dad went to UCLA. I don't have kids, but if I did, and he was a highly touted high school football player, I feel like I would be inclined to push him to my alma matter.

I realize that you have to let your kids take their best opportunity and go where they feel comfortable, but UCLA is nothing to sneeze at, and the program is on the rise.

Maybe I'm just secrelty wishing that he goes to UCLA rather than USC.

All schools from USC up are all in the top30. That means they are most likely a top100 University in the WORLD. All are fine schools.

I hope Tyler comes to ND...but I hope it's because he WANTS to be here...not because he feels pressure. If he does not want it in his HEART (not just head) he will not perform well and might leave.

I take offense...The Opera in Poland is very well-respected in Europe. I know as my uncle was a tenor in the opera and traveled through Europe.

I disagree with your comment on ND being the 5th best school in California...ND has one of the highest passing rates for Pre-Med majors and one of the highest graudation rates period.

I think Tyler will actually surprise everyone and go with a school not named USC or ND

remember CJ Spiller from the 06' class? At this time last year I doubt Clemson was on the radar.

1. When did the ND undergrads have to sit in the stands? Both graduate and undergrads were on the floor at my son's graduation last year.

2. Marc Tyler is NOT applying to graduate school. His is looking for a football scholarship at the undergraduate level. The football scholie eliminates Cal Tech, it leaves Stanford as the only undergraduate school offering football scholarships that is considered superior to ND (Slightly higher SATs but the Princton Selectivity index has them rated even).

3. UCLA and UC Berkeley, at the undergraduate level, are NOT as selective as ND.

Selectivity is not necessarily a good measure of the quality of institution.

For instance, if you were to look in the top Liberal Arts schools (some in the area):
Oberlin, Grinnell, Carleton, Earlham, Swarthmore

You will find truly elite schools with much lower "statistics". These schools are easily Top20 caliber academically...but don't measure up statistically.

There are other fish in the sea. We really have some great talent coming in this fall...and I have no doubt we will pick up one more good RB with the 2007 class.

"Elite" schools in this thread seem to be larger institutions. With 8,000 u-grads, ND might be considered a "medium". I agree that the schools, in your post, can hold their own against the UC Berkeley, UCLA, ND and Stanfords of the world. The Princeton Selectivity Index seems to agree.

I think that when you see USC rated in the top thirty, it refers to the endowment and resources a university has avaible. Unless the laws of mathematics have changed, USC's selectivity is NOT one of the top 30 in the US.

You are correct. That, and whether any other university can measure up to ND's academic reputation. :)

Threads like these always remind me of why I went to ND. We all have so much faith for Our Mother and so much hope for it's students.

No one here wants Tyler to settle for a lesser school...no matter how slight that "lesser" is. And we all agree that he cannot do much better than ND.
