In these ever changing times of college football realignment, I ask you what would you do with college football. Here is what I would do.
There are roughly 119 teams in FBS football. I would start with realigning them. Not worry about the FCS teams. I would create four power conferences consisting of 16 teams in each conference and 8 teams per division. That creates a new 64 team Division 1 FBS. The other 55 teams would be divided up into 4 power conferences (Division 2 FBS) of their own with 12 or 13 teams in each conference and 6 or 7 teams per division.
Now, where your school ends up at first is based solely upon the best 16 teams in that demographic region.
All schools will be given what they have now, full scholarship access, recruiting visits etc.
The season would consist of 12 regular season games still. An FBS Division 1 school will play each of their division opponent (7 games), 2 from the opposite division in the conference, and then three that are traditionally a rival or whoever the school decides to schedule. THERE WILL BE NO DIVISION 1 SCHOOL PLAYING A DIVISION 2 SCHOOL. The top two teams from each division will be thrown into a pool at the end of the year that will consist of 8 teams. Those 8 will have a playoff to determine the national champion. There will still be other bowl games though. If two or more schools tie for one of the positions then a tie breaker will be enforced. This tie breaker will either be points scored, points given up, point differential, or common opponent. I would prefer point differential but that might lead to large blowouts (however, if we put a max number on the differential per game, that might help. Let's say the max number is 35, whether you win 35-0 or 45-7, you only get 35 points for that game if/when the tiebreaker needs to be used)
So, bowl games are there, playoff is there. One national champion. The playoff will be three weeks. Each team will play three games to determine ranks one through eight. Here is what it will look like, with numbers instead of teams.
A---\ /---E
A---\ /---E
B---/ \ A / \---F
A---/\---E
C---\ / \ /---G
C---/ \---G
D---/ \---H
That is three games for teams A and E. Team A won first place, Teams E is second.
Teams C and G will play for third and fourth. Now in order to get all the places and three games a piece. The losers from each first round game play each other, then the winners of those two games play each other
B---\ B /---F
B---/\---F
D---/ \---H
Team B is fifth and team F is sixth, Team D will play team H for seventh and eighth place.
Division 1 FBS is complete.
Division 2 FBS will have the same playoff system.
The catch of all of this is...
The bottom two teams in each division of D1FBS will be relegated to D2FBS while the top two teams in each division of D2FBS will be promoted to D1FBS. This will give teams with poor first halves something to play for.
The only problem I see is scheduling could be a bit of a hassle. However, if they started in middle January I don't see how it cannot be done by the middle of June.
Questions, comments, concerns?
Post your own if you want.
