Yes, maybe we have an Asian next. If you are upset that the President picked her to politically satisfy his Hispanic constituants then I understand that because it seems almost forced.

But this lady is a Princeton & Yale grad and according to the administration brings more judicial experience to the Supreme Court than any justice confirmed in the past 70 years.

I'd say she she is just fine, despite her Hispanic handicap. (sarcasm strongly implied)

AP sources: Obama picks Sotomayor for high court - Yahoo! News.

All I been hearing for weeks is that Obama needs to pick a hispanic. Since they are the bigggest minority population. I'm not questioning the woman credentials just the thought process.

I agree with the appearance of a quota slot being filled if she was not a judge. George H.W. Bush was the first one to appoint her. The Republicans may have dragged on her elevation to Appeals by William Clinton but she got enough of their support to get there. Unless a story pops up about an illegal Norwegian maid with no SSN withholding and was chained to a bed ...

Sometimes people have to be forced to do the right thing. People can complain all they want about having to fill a quota or complying with affirmative action, but without it alot of us would still be on the outside looking in. Don't get me wrong I hope to see the day that we don't need affirmative action, but I don't see that changing any time soon.

Hispanic was a word created in the 70's to define a demographic.

While the word was used in the 70's by the US Census for demographics, it wasn't a word created in the 70's. The word goes back at least two millenia. The Romans used Hispanicus to refer to the Iberians, their language, and culture. Trajan was Hispanic. Both the Greeks and Celts used a similar word.

Yes but the word was never used to describe people of Latin or Spanish descent. In modern definitions French, Phillipinos, and Carribean can also be considered Hispanic.

Here is the thing. When I saw this, I called my Dad and we chatted about it. Him being a man of the law for all 40 plus years of his life, told me that she was quoted as saying: "It is the role of the Supreme Court to create policy."

No... it isn't. The goal of the court is to enforce the Constitution and appel any case that violates the document.

If you wanna think about it... there are only a few hallmark cases that anyone can name off the top of their heads:

Mapp v. Ohio abolished unlawful search and seizure. Miranda v. Arizona set forth Miranda rights. Gideion v. Wainwright (sp?) established the right to an attorney. Brown v. Board desegregated schools and Plessy created seperate but equal.

These cases did not create policy. They clairfied the constitution. Here's the thing... if you think about it... the Judicial Branch is the most powerful branch of the government. Why? No checks and balances once the affirmation process is completed.

Hispanic is not a race. Any one can be Hispanic. You can be black, white, Native American and Asian as long as you were born in a Spanish speaking nation and follow their culture you are Hispanic. It's here in this country that people think it's a race. That goes to Latino also anyone that speaks a Latin based language can call themselves Latin or Latino.
