Or did it sound like Davie wasn't too fond of the Irish? I mean when Hayden is commentating, I don't expect to hear anything possitive about ND, or when Mark May is giving his 2 cents worth, but Bob Davie? You'd think he would still have some pride from leading the Irish in the past. It just sounded to me like he was spiteful or something? Maybe I was just too wound up from the way the game was going?

What do you think?

He had some good things to say, and at one point I heard him say "I'm on the Weis bandwagon now," but he also had some pretty dumb things come out of his mouth. Criticizing Quinn's QB draw, for instance. That play-call was sheer brilliance. Charlie took a situation where any normal coach in their right mind would've chucked a couple of quick passes to keep the clock from running down, showed a 5-wide empty backfield formation, and ran his QB right up the gut. GT never saw it coming. Granted it was a risky call, but the risk was mitigated by the fact that it was a very well-designed play to begin with. Sometimes you have to be willing to take a risk.

He seems to struggle somewhat with his feelings for Notre Dame. I think he genuinely wants them to succeed, but the bitterness isn't entirely gone yet, and it pokes through from time to time, probably without him even realizing it.

Overall, though, I still think he calls a decent game.

I was thinking the same thing, smerky. But then I corrected myself. The guy loves Notre Dame, he just wants to make a career out of announcing/analyzing games and in order for him to continue and be successful, he has to come off as completely neutral.

In his particular situation, it's risky to sound too positive in his approach to ND.

I think he calls a decent game for the most part. He may have some bitterness but in fairness most of us do to so we don't judge him objectively.

When he noted how risky the Quinn draw was with little time on the clock and essentially said (my words not his) he wouldn't do something like that, I posted on our gameday thread, "And that's why you're not a head coach anywhere, Bob!"

Like Ogl said i think he is just considering his broadcasting career and doesn't want to sound bias towards ND but while trying to do so came off as a little anti-ND.

well if anything herbstriet was talking up the irish so much that davie had to give tech a little.
you couldn't really have both guys just boosting on the irish in a close game like that.

davie really sounded pro-calvin johnson...but who wouldn't

I don't know. Maybe it's just me, but every announcer I hear on TV seems to give more positive props to the opposing teams. I think it'd be nice to have someone praise ND for having to face everyones "A" game, week in and week out.

I think all of us probably judge him with a little bit of bias. I didn't think he was bad... and like it was said above, he can't sound too biased for ND... at the same time, he probably is still just a tiny bit bitter. It's only natural.

I could do without Davie, but Herbstreit turns out to be great in the booth.
Davie might become superfluous after the season.
Herbie, unlike most analysts, really understands game momentum.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Pat Haden, a former USC QB does ND home games. Remember last year when ND played USC and they ran a flea-flicker, BQ got hit and the ball got picked. Haden said, " you know you come out here in your green jerseys, and then you run a gimmick play........and so on" idiot didn't realize Shark was wide open by 20 yards, it was a brillant play. Oh well I hate that guy, and he hates ND, gotta put up with him 7 times this year. He's truley anti-ND.

You see and hear the bias because you are looking for it. It's that simple. It's the same concept as the 'liberal/conservative bias' in the media. Two people can watch the same exact thing and interpret it completely differently. FWIW, Haden is excellent and really enjoys doing ND games.

I turn the sound down on the T.V. and listen to Don Criqui and Alan Pinkett do the radio broadcast. Try that the game is so much better.

Great idea, but the timing of my satelite is about a 2 second delay from the radio. I tried that last week for awhile, I thought those two made a great team.

Pat Haden enjoys the paycheck he gets from NBC, he's a bastard, I will never change my opinion of him. It's down right blasphomy. SC QB, it's like having Todd Marinovich banging my sister.

Sorry "mirertobrooks", but I think Haden does a pretty good job of being neutral....just like Herbie does. I'm the biggest SC hater on the planet, so if anyone would criticize him it would be me.

I love how Davie crticized Weis' decision to go for it on fourth down at the end of the game. That's how he coached......never to win the game......just not to lose it. He stunk up this place. How's the view from the booth buddy?

You're probably right Adam, but what Pat Hayden are you listening to? I'd agree he enjoys the games so long as the Irish are on the short end.
