WalMart Blackmailing Thieves?

So WalMart is now offering customers who steal and get caught the chance to avoid arrest and prosecution if they pay WalMart to attend a class on why it's bad to steal. Not advocating stealing or standing up for the crooks, but it sounds like some type of blackmail.

At Walmart, $400 and 6 hours will make that shoplifting charge go away

It's a choice though. They could waive the fine and class and face the law. I'd prefer if every thief was prosecuted to the full extent of the law by every store.

The moral of the story here is if you're gonna steal something, it should be valued at >$400 to make it worthwhile. Meanwhile, some idiot is gonna end up coughing up $400 over a candy bar.

The irony in all this: it's Lafayette, where the douchebag Dean of Student Affairs at Purdue was caught shoplifting a few years ago. Couldn't have happened to a bigger POS.
