I think coaches love to have a scholarship or two to reward these young men's hard work and dedication and to provide them with some unexpected financial relief in the tens of thousands of dollars, which this year includes cost of attendance stipends. Watching theirs and their teammates' reactions is always heartwarming and indicative of how much of a part of the team they are.

"It’s a great relief. A great relief,” Talley said. “I just called my mom, and she was very happy, yelling for me. My dad, also. It’s just a great relief for all of us.”

(Auburn) Walk-ons Mike Sherwood and Aaron Garrison earn scholarships
“Oh, Dirty Mike, I’m so proud of him,” senior linebacker Justin Garrett said. “You wouldn’t believe it. He works so hard. He comes out there to battle every day. I was surprised — I think the whole team was surprised, because I think he’s just a redshirt sophomore and that’s one of the earliest I’ve seen a player get a scholarship in this program since I’ve been here."

Q: What does it mean from a financial perspective?

A: It means a lot. My parents, they’d always told me, not to put pressure on me, to get (the scholarship), but it was more of my goal. My mom just went back to work, and she hasn’t worked in 15 years. She went back to work, like, two months ago or so, so that was probably to help out a little bit, but it takes some stress off them. My dad, he does his own business, so it’s not like the job security’s always there. It was a big relief, I’m sure.

Two Texas A&M walk-ons earn football scholarships (video link to their highlight reel with "scholarship" at the end)

College Station -- College football walk-ons who subject themselves to 100-degree heat for rigorous practices and taking daily whippings as living, breathing tackling dummies from the scholarship players deserve some sort of reward – and often that’s simply getting to wear the uniform.

Then, there are other walk-ons who deserve a whole lot more – and are actually rewarded with scholarships for their hard work and productivity on Saturdays.

Few moments in college sports are more heartwarming than the granting of scholarships to walk-ons. There is something inspirational about seeing others rewarded for their hard work, especially in football, where often undersized, overlooked players see their labor pay off through the form of a free year of education.

OHIO STATE WALK-ONS ELIJAAH GOINS, ZACH TURNURE EARN SCHOLARSHIPS

Ohio State had six players enter the draft early, one player no longer on scholarship prob. due to academics, and eight players transferred. This attrition opened up two scholarships for the senior walkons.

Goins is a two-time OSU Scholar-Athlete who is majoring in pharmaceutical sciences.
Turnure was a member of the Ohio State lacrosse team before making the move to the gridiron and he is majoring in communications.

Clemson, who always has room for walkons to receive scholarships, awarded four walkons with scholarships, giving them a full 85 players on scholarship now.

Clemson took a small (14 signees) class in February, and will graduate six players, not counting any redshirt Seniors who do not get a fifth year.

The four receiving scholarships are:
Ty Thomason, WR
Pat Godfrey, OL
Kelby and Kaleb Bevelle, DEs

They join four other current players who started as walkons but were given scholarships last year, which were renewed.

It's Rudy time!

It's Rudy time!

While Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State. Clemson at this time are at 85 scholarship players, other schools have begun awarding walkons scholarships. Some schools have a long history of walkons with scholarships - Stanford and Clemson to name a couple. Clemson had eight players, originally walkons, who were on scholarship last year. (Stanford, Penn State and Clemson awarded walkons scholarships earlier this year. (I am not counting blueshirts, but include grayshirts and PWOs.)

Joe Schmidt, Charlie Fiessinger, Montgomery Van Gorder, Chris Finke, Austin Webster, Josh Anderson are a few Irish walkons that have recently earned scholarships.

Nationally, Heisman winner and Number 1 draft pick Baker Mayfield at Oklahoma was a walkon. Saban at Alabama has over the years awarded walkons scholarship, including current RS Sr Jamie Mosley, younger brother of All-American C.J. Mosley. Major Ogilivie, QB for the Tide, was a walkon and his son, Morgan Ogilivie, walked on at Alabama. JJ Watt, Antonio Brown, Jordy Nelson, Clay Matthews, T.J. Ward, Ziggy Ansah were walkons to name a few.

This year,
Oklahoma awarded Myles Tease a scholarship, who said:
“I was excited,. You know, I’m kind of like a laid back person, but I was kind of excited. I was just like relieved. I just felt like all the hard work that I’d done paid off. Like it was just amazing to see that I can do something like this and then it pay off, and it’s like an inspiration to other people, just seeing that you can come out here and bet on yourself to do better on the field and just know that you can put it all down field and just work hard every day.”

Two USC walkon players have been awarded scholarships - a Punter and a Kicker. Oftentimes, special teams players accept a PWO status and are rewarded later when scholarships open up. Recovering from NCAA sanctions, USC accepted a number of players as PWOs and Blueshirts who earned scholarships later.

Kentucky awarded three walkons with scholarships. Mark Bouvier, who played at Lexington Catholic, describes calling his mom.
“My mom was crying. She was about to make me cry,. It was hard talking to her. My parents have done so much for me and being able to get this scholarship for them that meant a lot.”
RB Zach Johnson said:
“I called my dad right after the meeting. He almost had tears in his eyes. Just a huge accomplishment for me and my family.”

Ball State awarded a walkon with a scholarship and the team chanted “Rudy! Rudy! Rudy!”

P.J. Fleck always enjoys putting on a show in awarding a scholarship to a walkon.
Minnesota Football: U.S. Marine parachutes in to award Bailey Schoenfelder a scholarship

Troy had a player's mom award him his scholarship.

Indiana University awarded a scholarship in a one-on-one drill.

Florida State football scholarship, according to a very reliable source, is at 79 scholarship players. So expect some walkons there to get scholarships.

Coach Dabo Swinney awards scholarships to Clemson walk-ons

Clemson had nine players, originally walkons, who were on scholarship last year, of their total of eighty-three scholarship players. Many have been on scholarship for multiple years. All but two are Seniors or Redshirt Seniors. Swinney usually continues their scholarships until graduation. All three above are RS Jrs.

Clemson signed twenty-seven recruits to scholarships for the Class of 2019.

What hasn't been written about is the amount of dead weight they drop. We don't allow ourselves to drop guys that don't carry their own. It's a rule we need to change.

Tis the season.
Kyle Whittingham: “One of the best aspects of being a head coach [is] seeing these guys come in and bust their tails for two, three, four years – just bleed and sweat like everybody else but pay their own way the entire time … to be able to reward them is very gratifying,”

WATCH: KU football surprises DT Sam Burt with scholarship

"I never have given scholarships out to walk-ons in a loud, public way because there's probably 10-15-20 guys who are tremendously responsible and play for us on a day-to-day basis that don't have scholarships," Miles said at KU football media day on Friday. "So I've always kind of kept it between me and the young man who is going to get the scholarship. But this guy was different and special. He's a 4.0 student. He's tougher than nails. You recognize the name because of how he plays, and everybody was for it."

Burt is from Abilene, Ks, received no offers, and a composite ranking of 0.7667.

Alabama awarded Giles Amos a scholarship.
Dabo awarded three walkons scholarships in January.
Texas awarded three walkons scholarships.
Texas Tech awarded eight walkons scholarships.
