Yeah, because Weis wouldn't be leaving Coach 'x' with any talent either. But apparently any argument that says Weis is not a good coach is moot.

I'm neither a Weis lover or hater. I just love ND football and I'm willing to listen to any LOGICAL argument on Weis. I do however have a problem with most Weis haters because they often let their emotions get the best of them. Often to the detriment of the program. They were (rightfully) disgusted by the team's performance in 2007 and 2008 but they have to realize that although the coaching staff made their fair share of mistakes they were not the main reason why we performed so badly. Most of the haters were also the same who were ready give up on Clausen at the end of last season. When someone is ready to make a decision they should make sure they posses and have analyzed all the facts. Not just the ones that suits their argument. I would love ND to be competitive with USC every year and regularly beat the top programs. I actually expect this from our program. Unfortunately that isn't going to magically happen because we are ND and have a glorious past. Fans need to stop putting unrealistic expectations on the program and realize a program like ours takes time to turn around. You're right, it's a fact that Lou won a NC in a few year but you're setting yourself up for disappointment by expecting Weis to do the same without taking into account other very important facts in your analysis. Lou was a good coach and a great motivator but he also benefitted from extremely strong classes left by Faust, significantly more scholarships and easier academic requirements. These facts are simply too significant to be ignore. Right now, I can't tell if Weis is a bad coach, an average coach or a great coach. Given the situation he came into, it's still too early to tell. However, the next three games should help us figure it out a bit. These are tough game in which we should realistically expect them to be competitive. Unless the team melts down this year I think Weis should be back. We simply have too much to loose and too little to gain next year to roll the dice on a new HC. In 2010 the talent of the team should finally be able to match our expectations. He should be back because IF he is the good/great coach we thought we hired and who we saw flashes of over his tenure, 2010 could be a great year for this program.

I do find it amusing that the theme of "Weis 'haters' are not logical thinkers" and similar statements are starting to pop up again and again on here. First, Holtz won in his 3rd year. I don't expect Weis to win it all every year. If you have followed my posts at all you would see that. What I do expect is basic fundamental football, which this team does not play and hasn't played under Weis. The team is inconsistent on both sides of the ball because of a lack of fundamentals, plain and simple. And Weis is recruiting his tail off, so talking about it being harder to recruit is bogus.

I have come out with these opinions recently. I have defended Weis again and again. This week I finally saw it. Just a lack of basic football on the field. That's a problem in my eyes. But whatever. Give him another year. Hell, give him 5 or 10. I root for ND but if they win or lose it doesn't especially affect my life. I don't get paid through ND football. So it's fine either way.

But you seem to be a rather logical kinda guy. I was surprised to hear a rant from the most loyal ND fan I know, quickly after the Navy fiasco. Dude was hard core pissed.

You know what would help the Irish D are some of the big boys from the islands. I know Charlie got ties to the islands. Get a couple 300 pound Hawaiians/Tongans/Samoans and you will see a change.

This has been discussed to great extentin the past. I give Weis a pass for 07 and 08 but this year should be a step foreward. Everything seemed to be going accordingly until the Navy game. That loss is should not have happened at this point. Now i will not say fire Weis with 3 games and a bowl to go. 10-3 is a positive sign after 07-08. This team is in better shape but that doesnt mean we can tolerate mediocraty. a 4 loss season with this talent is unacceptable. If he loses this week i can no longer argue for his job security.

We don't have to tolerate mediocrity, but we might have to pass through it on the way to greatness. You can't just flip a switch and become a NC team. As for the Navy loss, even in the SEC at least once a year one of the undefeateds looses a major upset game to a team that wasn't even predicted to compete. It's College football these things happen, most programs don't crumble and start bickering about a new coach like I've seen here.
