How, you ask? Listen.
Notre Dame - 2007/2008
1. The Irish fielded a young team with almost no experience in 2007, and with minimal experience in 2008.
2. The previous year, the following players graduated or declared for the draft: Brady Quinn (four year starter), Darius Walker (three year starter), Jeff Samardzija (superstud, two year starter), Rhema McKnight (three year starter), Ryan Harris, Bob Morton, Victor Abiamiri, Derrek Landri, Mike Richardson, and Chinedum Ndukwe. That was a boatload of talent and experience.
3. An inexperienced quarterback (Jimmy Clausen) led the offense, and struggled.
4. Notre Dame finished the 2007 season 3-9.
5. In 2008, the Irish got off to a hot start with a big win over a rival (Michigan), a heartbreaking loss to another rival (Michigan State), and a close victory (Stanford).
6. Now 4-1, the Irish faced a Top 25 opponent. When all seemed lost, the Irish got close. With a minute and a half left, the Irish started to get the ball moving, but couldn't score and lost a devastating game to North Carolina.
7. Jimmy Clausen had a couple of outstanding performances early in the season.
8. Now 4-2, the Irish beat a weak opponent to climb back to 4-2.
9. Following a 5-2 start, the Irish lost a heartbreaker the next week and plummeted, losing four of their final five games, including a bad upset and a blowout from a rival team.
10. The Irish then finished strong in a bowl game.
Michigan - 2008/2009
1. Michigan fielded a team with almost no experience in 2008, and minimal experience in 2009.
2. The previous year, the following players graduated or declared for the draft: Chad Henne (four year starter), Mike Hart (four year starter), Mario Manningham, Adrian Arrington, Jake Long, and Shawn Crable.
3. An inexperienced quarterback (Threet, Sheridan, Forcier) led the offense.
4. Michigan finished the 2008 season 3-9.
5. In 2009, Michigan got off to a hot start with a win over a rival (Notre Dame), a heartbreaking loss to another rival (Michigan State), and a close victory (Indiana).
6. Now 4-1, Michigan faced a Top 25 opponent. They had the ball with a minute and a half left, failed to score, and lost a heartbreaker to Iowa.
7. Tate Forcier has had a couple of great performances early in the season.
(Predicted)
8. Michigan, now 4-2, beats Delaware State easily.
9. Michigan will lose to Penn State the next week and win one of their next four games (probably Purdue).
10. Michigan is destroyed at home by a rival (Ohio State).
Interesting parallels?
