Thoughts from a Nebraska Cornhusker Fan

As many of you know, my college football love, the Cornhuskers are in on some rough times. I feel I'm very knowledgable of college football, past and present. For instance, I still think the greatest ever college football time for their period was 1945 Army. How about that team?

Most of this y'all have probably already heard most of this, but I just wanted to provide an unique perspective from somebody in a "red state" that's detatched from ND.

Most of y'all, being knowledgable college football fans understand what's going on in Lincoln with the Huskers. Recently, Dr. Tom Osborne returned as the Athletic Director. Frankly, it was a great hire if it's for the short term. With Dr. Tom, he brings back something that has been missing from Lincoln since Frank Solich was fired...the tradition. I don't want to get deeply into it, I want to share my thoughts of ND instead. But one thing Dr. Tom keeps emphasizing is this: There are no quick fixes in college football these days.
He also pointed out it's easy to be a fan where your team is winning...when they're losing, it's much tougher. On to my observations of ND
1. Hang with these kids...don't turn against them. They read these boards. Y'all played a BRUTAL schedule, unlike anybody else in the country to start this season. With a bunch of rookies on the field, that's a tough order, even for ND to follow. I played college football at the NAIA level...and I know a few of the butt kickings we took also really crushed any confidence we had for the rest of the season. It's easy to "force" your body to be in the game...it's tough to keep your head in a game...first broken play, sack, whatever, you say "here we go again". You must support the players and at least TRY to find and discuss the good side of thing...and I SURELY see some good things there in South Bend. Also, stop comparing how many teams scored more points on Team X than we did. You are talking about a team that lacks complete confidence.
2. Don't let the "Fire Charlie Weis" voices get too loud...it's a distraction to not only the players, but to potential recruits. Looks like Nebraska will be losing 4-7 if/when Bill Callahan gets fired. In my opinion, it's way too early to do the fire a coach thing. As we learned in Nebraska with Frank Solich's firing, be careful what you ask for. What we got divided the fans. Unfortunately, we never made it anywhere near the "promised land" so our entire football staff is likely to get the axe at the end of the season. But who do we go after at the end of the season? When you fire a coach, you will lose one season worth of recruiting generally speaking.
3. In my opinion, watching the Irish on TV, I seem to be one of the few folks on this message board that seems to think the coaching there in South Bend will be just fine and firing on all cylinders next year. If I had a complaint about THIS years coaching, it would be the offensive line play. All the Irish woes seem to be as a result of the offensive line. If Coach Weis does not take care of that issue during the offseason, then perhaps the dirges will start...but I think Charlie Weis is one of the most competeive guys in the business and he'll get it fixed.
4. Your whole defense needs work...just about at every position. But there is definitely talent...especially the young studs committed to your university that I will GUARANTEE will fix THAT! LOOK AT YOUR DEFENSIVE STUDS COMING IN!! Too much noise about firing coaches could lose some of those recruits. With the young talent already in and others committed to coming in, once Coach Weis has the kinks work out amongst his coaches and once Coach Weis learns the critical lessons he's learned in his first few years, I see the Irish a national contender in 09/10. Remember Charlie Weis' first recruiting class was no great because Ty Willingham had just been fired. I believe you need to give a coach a chance to fill his team with players which match his philosophy. If it doesn't improve drastically at that poin, then firing is in the cards.
5. For the past several weeks here in Nebrasksa, all the radio stations have been listening to caller about firing Bill Callahan, etc. One thing that comes up is Notre Dame. Many folks here in Nebraska uderstand they are very impatient with our football program. It's a natural flaw I suppose. People here don't want the same thing to happen to Notre Dame. I remember after the ND loss to Michigan, a caller referred to ND as the laughing stock of college football. Nebraska fans...it seems even more than Irish fans, believe YOUR program is on the right track for the very near future. Believe me, it's hard to believe me on this but it's true. Our fans believe when ND finally finds it's confidence with a few wins under it's belt....well, watch out.

As Joe Montana recently said, the kids at ND are playing pre-season games for next season.

Thanks very much for the very kind post! I really liked the 'Huskers as a kid back when they were running the old-school offense, and they still have a soft spot in my heart. I'm looking forward to seeing both of our programs return to glory ...

Thanks for an outside perspective. I hope you're correct & Montana's line is all too true this season. ND's offense is the worst I've ever witnessed in college football at ANY level. I expect a lot better next year.

Good luck to your Huskers.

Great first post and welcome to the board.

I don't think you're one of the few, it's just that usually the trouble makers are more vocal about their concerns. Just like in real life unfortuantly. Many of us do believe were're on the right track especially with the way the recruiting has been going the last few years, but this is an impatient "I want it now" society that we live in, but when the program was allowed to be mediocre for so long it will also take a while for it to return to the top if you want to do it the right way. Good Luck with the future of your program as well, just not with Trevor Robinson. As you said ND's OL needs to improve and he's a good one.

Now if only ND and NU would schedule another home and home.

If it's any indication on the respect Nebraska fans have for the Irish, the last ND game in Lincoln was the most electric atmosphere I can remember at ANY game. We had some Irish fans tailgaiting with us before the game...nothing but respect. Our programs will be restored very soon...yours sonner that ours I feel as we are about to go through another coaching transition. Just believe me...ND is on it's way back...look at that young talent you're receuiting. If Coach Weis can't get their confidence level up by then, then I'm sure it will be a situation where the other coaches will be knocking down the doors to coach that talent.

College Football is better when the traditional powers are consistently great with a few new up and comers mixed in. Hang in there gang. It's easy to be a fan when you're winning...now you are being tested...don't give up because I say the promised land is near. If we in Nebraska can get the right coaches, perhaps we'll be posting for a national championship game in a few years.

I would hate to lose Trevor, but the writing is on the wall. Elkhorn was recently annexed by Omaha, and I don't think Trevor's dad was real pleased at all about that. Take it for what it's worth, But it seems the annexation was enough for dad to want to leave. Also, just the word on talk radio (1620 AM Omaha) is that ND is still a very strong possibility...if not the only possibility. He's a great kid and reminds me when I watch him play of the old Nebraska Linemen of greater days. Most of the linemen for the Huskers during the glory days were in state "farm strength/work ethic" type guys who would probably only rate a 3 or 4 star prospect. But they were always great as O-Linemen.

I still don't understand what really happend with you guys. Things seemed to be improving, recruiting was going well, and your division of the Big XII was ripe for the picking. I know you guys lost big to USC but that was somewhat understandable to me I thought you guys were maybe a bit overrated going into the season. Not that you guys were a bad team, but I thougt that NU was somewhere between above adv to very good. Probably closer to good in my mind. USC has the talent to be great that loss wasn't shocking to me mabe it was to you guys I don't know. Then there was an unexpected blowout loss and before you know it, it seemed like the snowball was already rolling. Then that was followed by another blowout loss, which then it appeared as though the wheels had already come off and it looked as though there was going to be a coaching change, recruits are looking around and then not suprisingly they were beaten badly again this week. What the heck happened and how did it happen so fast? Had this already been building and the rest of the CFB world hadn't taken notice or was this just a recent development spurned out of shock?

Thanks for the post man...we love to hear from folks outside the ND nation.

Maybe in the next couple of years the Huskers will meet the Irish in a bowl? You never know!

Thanks again for stopping in.

One of the big problems was the talent we were bringing in we coming here for the wrong reason. The were coming as a jumping pad to the NFL. That brought a lot of arrogance. Secondly, Bill Callahan never really set out to build a 4-year program...during his stint, nearly 23-40% of his schollies were reserved for juco transfers. It made it real tough to build a 4 year west coast offense team. Next, he removed the tradition. Pictures that had at one time lined the hallways of athletic facilities were removed by this coach. These were pictures of history...Johnny Rodgers, Turner Gill, Scott Frost, etc. Bill want the past gone. Ex-players were no longer allowed at practices...just as a support mechanism. I think USC exposed us as a team with no direction...but more importantly, much like what ND is going through...a team that nearly, completely lacks confidence.

Thanks we can understand most of that. It actually sounds a lot like Ty Willingham, and when you factor in an almost complete lack of recruiting and a mediocre record, ND said enough was enough and we can't let this go any further. From what I've heard Ty wanted out near the end as well. That clears a lot of my questions up, thanks for the explination.

I have always said thought to myself that Nebraska has the only fan base that can say they are collectively classier than Irish fans and keep a straight face... even when they talk shit they seem to do so with class and backed by facts and stats...

as for this post?? nice job... and thanks for the outside input.

Yeah, I attended both the 2000 game in South Bend and the 2001 game in Lincoln. I thought that the Husker fans were among the best fans I have ever met from any opposing school. I think the two schools need to get together on the field again. Unfortunately, I think that Kevin White would rather schedule a game against Tulane. In Orlando.

If you could just tell us that Trevor Robinson is going to come to us you would be a great asset to our program.
