AP World History has been around since 2002 and is considered by many who have taught multiple AP courses to be the most difficult of the AP history tests. Based on some of your posts, it is unfortunate that your school doesn't offer the course, as the philosophical approach of looking for similarities as well as differences in societies over time might benefit your ability to go beyond the 'us-them' dichotomy so pervasive in our society and to also allow for the 'we'. This allows for a more global perspective of both history and modern society. An example can be found in one society you mention. Most of us in the West look at Iran and see overt intolerance and an extremely conservative ulama dictating policy. Yet, if one digs beyond the superficial, an interesting aspect of religious tolerance is just as overt in the Iranian government. There are political seats reserved in the parliament for the Jewish population, the largest outside of Israel in the region, which may only be filled by Iranian Jews. Does this make the country a bastion of all that is good and just? Of course not. However, it shows a willingness to ensure political representation of minority groups often unseen in societies generally considered more open and tolerant. Such a policy here would render gerrymandering of districts a historical abboration rather than a modern reality! Keep this in mind when making comments about how much more bigoted or racist any society is relative to another. All societies have their strengths and weaknesses and shall remain imperfect as long as people remain in and running them.
