Landing some of these guys would be sick! Check out Deonte Thompson's 40 time of 4.28. Impressive if it's legit.

his 4.28 time is legit, he ran the 40 three different times and each time he did he ran under 4.3 every time.

I don't guage a player on his 40 time, to me 40 times mean little or nothing. I look at hustle plays, "football" speed as well as intelligence in order to guage a player.

Very good K Mac.

The 40 yard dash is one element of a player's evaluation. It is not an end all, be all of his speed or overall ability.

There are defensive tackles who run 5.5 40 times, but in the sequence of a game get through the line and make a push on the QB or ball carrier and make big plays.

DTs don't have to sprint 40 yards into the backfield to make a tackle for loss.

I agree that hustle and intelligence are very important, but a 40 time is not irrelevent, especially for skill positions. Scouts at all levels don't look at that number for nothing. It's important. Now, for DL and OL, I think it means almost nothing. But, you might be making another point in that a 40 time can be misleading, as it doesn't automatically translate into a good football player. I agree with that 100%.

Give me a good route runner with discipline and brains over a 4.3 forty that breaks off of routes and has no football IQ at all any day of the week.

Teddy Ginn Jr, great example. He is finally staying true to his routes and the results are evident. If this guy continues to work hard and learn the playbook, watch out.

Some of the best receivers in history haven't had blazing speed. They played smart and run smart.

Jerry Rice never had blazing speed. He was no plodder, but neither was he a world class track star. He's the perfect example of running good routes, hands, concentration and toughness.

Just looking for instance at like the average WR or RB. What the average running back runs a total of 5 yards every down or close to it, not 40; and the average WR runs around 10 yards every down. It is all about position and intelligence. My highschool coach always taught us to put ourselves in good positions to make plays, we weren't always the most talented and def. not the biggest team but we only lost 8 games in 4 years, including two years in which we went to Semi-State and one year to the State title game, by playing smart and fundlmentally sound football.

Point made. Speed is good, but technique, intelligence & heart are better.

Sounds exactly like Matt Shelton. Ran a 4.23 a couple of times and then tore his ACL, so it brought him down to 4.29.

Sorry, sure I like smart players, but it's the coaches that design smart plays. We have some of the most intellegent players in college football, but this isn't brain surgery. I'll take Rocket speed all day long. Especially in the positions where speed kills. IMO, speed makes up for a lack of experience and can make up for mistakes. The most glaring weakness of our defense right now is the lack of speed and the lack of pass rush. I also didn't like many of the schemes. I know CW will address this in short order and we all know that no ones position is guarnteed if your'e not getting the job done. I think we'll see some new faces on defense next season. Will it be enough to make a big difference. We wont know that until next season.

Speed is important. There is absolutely no question. If anyone knows this, it is Notre Dame fans.

It is only one component of a player's overall ability, however. If you're smart and have decent speed, you make up for what you lack physically with instinct and intelligence.

If you're a blazer on the track but can't run a proper route, you're worthless.

You can be taught to run good routes. But you can't teach speed.

Yes, and when you have all of them combined, you have something special.
