This seems like a similar concept of ND going to the Big 10. What happens to the rivalries? TAMU and Oklahoma would take two of their non-conference games right there.

This was merely a political move with no real intention for Texas to join the conference. This is nothing more than a pat on the back to try to entice another team to get on board more quickly.

Texas has everything to lose to go to the Big 10. Rivalries, more local games with less expense relative to travel and so on. My guess is this is scratching someone else's back for back-up with the Will Muschamp not being able to recruit due to the new "next-in-line" coach restrictions/clause.

I appologize for my natural gearings towards conspiracy theory but I would bet the bank Texas says "No can do Hombre'." Or they will pretend to be interested until someone else steps up.

BTW, ND should never drop to this level as well.

Actually Texas will benefit more than lose. TV revenue is bigger in the Big 10 than it is in Big 12.

Pitt or Mizzou are the most natural additions.

I think it's Pitt. Mizzou is one of the original Big 8 teams...has a border war with Kansas and a decent rivalry with Nebraska. As a Jayhawk fan, I wouldn't want Mizzou to leave.

By adding another team, the Big Ten would actually have 12 teams. So would the conference name remain the Big Ten or would they eventually have to rename it as the Big Ten plus the Little Two? Hmmmm??? If so, which 2 teams would take the honor (or dishonor) as the Little Two???

Depends on the sport, I think. :)

JoePa would freak if it was Pitt (or any other team that is regularly in the top 25). He wants either Kent St, Toledo, Eastern Illinois, or Youngstown St. he can't get enough cream puffs on his schedule to help rack up the wins.

2/3 yrs ago maybe 4 I read an article that speculated 3 major conferences combining teams by east central and west. It seemed absurd but even then they made provisions for an INDEPENDENT Notre Dame. Texas aint go'in to the little 11 they would be crazy to do that. This stuff takes the flavor of college football and waters it down like old soup. Can $$$$ be that more important, they are already wealthy schools.

I wouldn't be surprised if 2, 3, or 4 superconferences form to erase the need for a playoffs.
I never thought of that 'great point', that may be why. Just leave Notre Dame alone. They dont need no stinkin conference. College football will find a place for a contending Notre Dame football team come bowl day.

there has also been talk of Texas going independent. they are a beast in several sports and could likely pull off their own tv deal and make much more than they do in the big 12.

andy yes, the tv revenue shared by all big 10 teams dwarfs that of the big 12 (hence any interest texas might have).

football goes in cycles for most teams. right now, ohio state is up and michigan is down. it is not always like that. Tressel does a very good job, but wont be there forever. once UM gets the "right" coach in there, there is no reason they cant hang with OSU. no doubt though, recent history indicates Texas would be king in the big 10 for the time being.
