Offensive line prospect Chris Stewart of Klein high school (Texas) was presented with his official invitation to the U.S. Army All-Star game today and during the awards ceremony he announced his intentions to play his college football at Notre Dame.

“It’s Notre Dame,” Chris Stewart said Tuesday of his college decision. “I thought it was pretty evident because Notre Dame was my only (official) visit and originally I planned to take four.

“It came down to Ole Miss and Notre Dame. I was impressed with Ole Miss, and I know they are struggling right now, but sometimes you see something in somebody that you believe in. I saw that in both coach Weis and coach Orgeron. Overall I thought the in bigger picture, life in general without football being considered, Notre Dame was a better choice for me. Not only will I get guidance from one of the best offensive line coaches (John Latina) in the game, and one best head coaches. I get a chance to go in early. Notre Dame has the academics, the school prestige, I just feel in love with the school just being up there. I hadn’t ever been to the school and I fell in love with the entire campus.

“I really liked the athletes,” Stewart said of his future teammates. “I’ve never met players from a college football team that talked so intelligently. They’re just good guys to be around. All of the guys were cool, laid back and they’d speak openly to you about anything.

“The fan base seems as loyal as I’ve ever come across, along with Texas A&M.” he added

“The biggest thing for me is that I see a great opportunity to go in when the program is losing some offensive linemen,” Stewart explained. “And then you have the head man (Charlie Weis) -- I really like him, although I probably won’t like him in a couple months when he’s making me puke everywhere.

“He and coach Orgeron were the closest when it came down to a father figure, a father away from home kind of thing. He (Weis) is the type of guy you can go to and he’ll give you the real spin on things. He won’t sugar coat it for you. He’s going to tell you ‘this is what you need to do’. And he’s a likeable person, someone you can trust. That also played a big role in me decision. Him, coach Haywood and coach Latina. Also the conditioning coaches came from Ole Miss. Coach Mendoza and his staff worked with my sister for awhile so that gave me some background on them

“The hardest thing for me was losing a bunch of college credits,” Stewart said of his credits that won’t transfer to Notre Dame. “Of the 21, I’ll get to keep six of those credits. That was a big sacrifice after how hard I worked the last two years. It’ll still pay-off somewhere. Even with the six I get to keep, then 15 hours my first semester and then after summer school, I’ll be a sophomore starting next year. It was tough giving those credits up, but with a degree from Notre Dame, I think it’ll be worth it.

“With us being the first recruiting class for coach Weis, hopefully we can do what USC is doing now and get some championships. I think the unifying thing is that we know we’re coming in to work. We’re coming in to get something done. You have guys that are immortalized at Notre Dame from 1988 and 1966, you say to yourself ‘why not me?’ Let’s bring America’s team back to greatness.

That’s all the sense of pride I have. I never thought I’d have a chance to make an impact on a team that is my childhood favorite. It’s that sense of pride that wants you to bring the program back to where it was, or not even where it was but make it even better.

“If I get a chance I’d like to get No. 55,” he replied when asked what jersey number he wanted when he reported to Notre Dame.

“All around it’s a great decision and I’m very happy,” he said of his college choice.

Sing Along With Me. I put the CD over the loudspeakers in our warehouse:

Cheer Cheer for Old Notre Dame
Wake up the echoes cheering her name
Send a volley, cheer on high
Shake down the thunder from the sky
What thou the odds be great or small
Old Notre Dame will win over all
While her loyal sons are marching onward to victory!!

Can he speak after Lou at the football banquet???

WOW!!! I have not heard such a lengthy, reasoned, passionate (with a side of humor) argument for going to a school EVER!

These guys from this class are on a mission. It should be quite fun the next 4/5, hell 10 years...

Stewart Goes With The Irish
by JASON SAPP

Chris Stewart, a 6-foot-5, 340-pound offensive lineman prospect from Klein, Texas, scheduled a press conference for today. Initially, it wasn't an event to announce his decision, rather a ceremonial event at his school.

"The Army All-American committee contacted me about coming to my school to present me with my jersey for the game," Stewart said. "They told me to keep it rather quiet for the event, so I decided to go ahead and announce my decision that day as well."

In the past, when a player is being considered as an early enrollment, they run the risk of being unable to participate in the Army All-American Bowl. Fortunately enough for Stewart, that didn't apply this year.

"I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to play, but it was the luck of the draw that I will be able to participate," he said. "I missed not being able to play by a week, so I am very grateful. After the game I have a week to prepare, and will be ready to go to college around the 17th of January."

Notre Dame has not had a player enroll early since before the Ara Parseghian era in 1964. The benefit of enrolling early is one that serves a dual purpose.

For the university, the scholarship can count towards the previous year or the upcoming year's maximum of 25 set by the NCAA regulations, which is critical at this point since this prospect is the Irish's 22nd verbal commitment (counting Richard Jackson, who will hold a press conference later today, as the 21st). It seems to benefit the player quite a bit as well, in Stewart's opinion.

"I've already taken some classes for college credits which gave me some thought on enrolling early," Stewart said. "The coaches talked to me about it and presented the opportunity to me. I took the information and realized I was in a good position to do it, so I considered the option."

Dan Saracino, the university's director of admissions, reported to BGI that all the potential candidates have met with him in regards to enrolling early. After the interviews, he then evaluates whether they are a worthy candidate. Apparently, Stewart's interview went rather well.

"It seemed like a good system so I decided before school started this year that I wanted to get the credits in and apply," Stewart recalled. "I met with Dan Saracino on my official visit USC weekend and was told that I was a good candidate. After being eligible to enroll early and the application process, I was given the approval and will be on campus in January as a student."

Running back James Aldridge and wide receiver George West are two of the other known verbal commitments that have considered coming to South Bend early. Aldridge had his interview with Saracino this past weekend, and it seems that he has gained approval to start in January as well. Saracino would only confirm one acceptance thus far, and he would not attach a name to it -- but both Aldridge and Stewart have stated their plans to be on campus next semester.

"I was told that I was the only accepted candidate as of now," Stewart stated. "It would be nice to have another player in my class with me next semester. Especially a running back, since I am an O-lineman."

Stewart's top three choices were Notre Dame, nearby Texas A&M, and Ole Miss, where he has some family ties. He prefers not to make an ordered list of schools, but did mention that all the choices are great schools -- it's just difficult to compare to Notre Dame.

"Notre Dame is a school that the tradition is strong and you grow up watching on television," Stewart explained. "It was difficult to not choose ND and get placed in a group of Notre Dame student-athletes."

Every athlete has their reasons for choosing a university. Stewart compiled his list rather easily and it seems relative to just about every other verbal commitment in the class. This just adds validity to the fact that Charlie Weis and his staff are getting the job done not only on the field, but off the field in recruiting as well.

"The reasons why I chose ND (are) because of the coach, I really get along well with him and the staff," Stewart said. "The academics, you have a leg up on the competition; and the school atmosphere, it's just the honor and pride that goes along with being part of the university. It's a great situation as far as the opportunity to play and it guarantees that you will still have a life after football."

I can remember back to when I was getting recruited heavily by the University of Miami (Fla.), Virginia Tech, and Notre Dame; and in making my decision a quote by former ND running back Tony Fisher summed it up best for my decision. "It's a 40-year decision, not a four-year decision."

Apparently Stewart has received the same message.

"You can't beat the academics at Notre Dame being a top-ten ranked university academically, and how well they are performing on the field," Stewart stated. "Notre Dame was more of a beneficial choice for me and required a deeper consideration because it will benefit me more throughout the rest of my life."

Holy cow! That kid's speech is like one big commerical for ND football! If Aldridge gets tired of the recruiting coordinator gig, I nominate Stewart to carry the torch.
