Florida coach Urban Meyer voiced concerns about the early signing period because it would reduce the time he would have to get to know a recruit.
"Everybody wants to speed this thing up," Meyer said. "I'd rather have it happen later. I want to quit making mistakes. I think making a mistake in recruiting devastates a program."

not much of a suprise here.. an early signing period would be bonus for nd..but hopefully our recruiting policy/philosophy has changed for the better this time around. Nd is off to a great start this year it would be nice to see nobody get poached or jump ship, last year was brutal.

----I would love to beat Urban down. He can't evaluate talent for sh*t. Then we'll see his true recruiting skills scumb*g.

Urban just loves to steal other teams recruits. An early signing period would hurt him!

Each passing day makes me more and more content that ND didn't get this ass-wipe dick-wad as head coach!!! Man, what a prick-head he is!

It will be interesting to see how his slimeball tactics work after he burns all his bridges. Coaches will be very leery to send their stud athletes to Urban after seeing how he offers, turns down commitments, rescends commitments, steals recruits, etc. SEC recruiting in Florida might hit a lull w/ the Florida people getting upset w/ Meyer and other SEC coaches like Saban. I think it will help Miami in a big way. For being considered such a great recruiter, Urban even knows he's not a great evaluator of talent. Ask Joey Getherall.

It wasn't in this article, but I read a quote summarizing the SEC feelings on it, and Urban was against it because he wants to "get to know" a kid, and his family.

Come on now! Thats a warm and fuzzy load of crap. If I'm not mistaken, the early signing period takes place in November in basketball, correct? Urb, are you meaning to tell me that from early February to November, you can't feasibly build a relationship with a kid and his family? That's horse manure, and you know it :crap:.

He also mentioned how he wants recruits to meet his family. I understand developing a relationship, but are backyard cookouts the best reason you can come up with for why we shouldn't enact an early signing period? How about putting in a little research Urban, rather than waiting 'til a guy gets built up, and you invite him over for a slumber party to "see if he's a good guy."

I understand that technicalities must be considered, but if b-ball can do it, then why not football? The Georgia coach, Mark Richt, had a much better point that Urban, but even that one has holes in it.

A) Why wouldn't you want to focus on your team more during the season, rather than recruits? Considering the reputation the SEC has with player discipline, I think devoting time to the kids you've got already would be a primary concern.

B) The kids that want to take their time will take their time. An early signing period won't work like a highway, of "if you build it they will come." The Vandy coach, Bobby Johnson, put it best when he said,
"It doesn't hurt basketball. I think it would take a lot of pressure off everybody. If he hasn't made up his mind, then don't sign. If he is ready to sign, then sign. It's pretty straight forward to me."

The signing period would be just for kids like Mike Ragone, that verballed before the summer months hit, and really didn't care to see Pete Carroll show up at his door with a bag full of promises in late January. Let these kids have some peace if they want it.

Bottom line; these coaches want kids on the market as long as they can, and not for the kid's purposes of seeing what's really best for them. The motives are all self serving with these big time programs.

btw, here's the other article I read on it:

Curious comment Irishknight. Just what are you basing this on? From what I've seen, he's an excellent evaluator of talent, and goes after the guys that he knows he's going to have a need for. Recruits like Tebow and Havin have really been good contributors immediately.

That the Cockwad is against an early signing period under the auspices of "not being able to get to know a recruit" is complete horseshit. He's pissed because it robs other programs of time to evaluate players before he swoops in to poach them.

If you noticed at all, he offers every recruit after some big time programs do like ND. A few recruits that commit to us get calls the very next morning trying to poach them because now he's heard how they're going to ND and Weis' evaluation of talent. He just doesn't wait for ND to offer somebody, but waits for many other teams as well. Sure, he can notice a few players from Florida that are right under his nose at one school(Lakeland) and any idiot couldn't miss that. Everybody knows how he recruits on this board so you're going to be the ugly duckling if you think he's a good evaluator and not a scumb*g.
