If you didnt already know this, MSU runs the Option spread. Which is a combination of the Spread Offense and the Option play.

Rating the Positions:

Quarterback - A+. Drew Stanton can run & pass, I think most realize that he is one of the best QB's in the nation. Backing him up is Sophmore Brian Hoyer, who actually has a better completion percentage than Stanton, and a 2-0 TD-INT ratio. A very solid group here.

Runningback - B+. I hate to compare Javon Ringer to Barry Sanders but he is that kind of back. He'll run for 2 yards, then -1, then 3, then he'll bust one out for a 40 yard gain. The problem is, other than Ohio State last year and Pitt this year, he hasnt performed versus solid defenses. Anyway, he averaged 6.7 yards per carry his freshman season to put things in perspective. Then there is Jehuu Caulcrick. He is a bruiser, 260 pounds and only 5-10. Not exactly a speedster, but we give him the ball on short-yardage situations and he usually pounds it in. If Notre Dame focuses too much on the Pass, your going to have a long day.

Wide Reciever/Tight End - A-. When a talented 6-6 guy isnt your best reciever, that says wonders. Trannon is good, and played well versus the Irish last year...but he rarely shows up to play. Watch out for Kerry Reed, he is NFL Material. He runs his routs well, had solid speed, and solid size. Then there is Jerramy Scott, the small guy. Depite his size, he plays his heart out and is very reliable. Finally, watch out for the burner...Terry Love. MSU has several other solid recievers, but they dont get a ton of time because of the talent of the guys ahead of them. The only thing is, we dont have a big-time standout like Jarrett or Johnson.

Offensive Line - C+. We had a great line last year, but lost 3 of 5 starters. The talent is there, but these guys are still unexperienced. Pass Blocking has been solid, run blocking still thru the middle still needs improvement.

----------

Defensive Line - C-. When asked upon, we pressure the quarterback pretty well. We didnt come up with sacks, but were in Palko's face all day. As far as running the ball, this unit only shows up to stop the run about half the time. Clifton Ryan and Ervin Baldwin are pretty good, also watch for David Stanton.

Linebackers - C. Before the season started, this looked like the best part of our defense. But they have let everyone down a little. Were flying all over but still missing a little something.

Secondary - B. This looked like the weakest part of our defense to start the season...but they have improved mightily. Otis Wiley and Nehamiah Warrick are both averaging a ton of tackles, also watch out for Demond Williams.

----------

Kicker - B. Freshman Brett Swenson appears to be pretty good so far. He is 5-6 with a long of 42 yards in a pressure situation.

Punter - B-. Was great two years ago, but had an average year last year. He is starting to get back to his 2004 All-American form.

Any questions about MSU?

You opened a lot of doors with this question, so I will save you.

Please respond to this in a mature manner. Sparty Pride is a cool guy thus far and isn't here to flame anyone.

My question: There was really only one way to go (up) for the special teams compared to last year. Are they that much better?

We did alright with maison last week. Sparty Pride will get similar treatment. Even though some of us are a bit cranky, understandedly so.

Well I think that the Blocked kick returned for a TD against OSU made things look even worse. But yes, the special teams were horrible last year. It cost us at least 2 or 3 games.

Two kickers split the duties last year, John Goss and Matt Haughey. Goss hit 4 of 11 field goals, then we brought in Haughey, who kicked even worse (1-5). This year, we have a new kid named Brett Swenson. He was the #4 ranked kicker out of High School by Rivals.com. He nailed 5 of 6 thus far with a long of 42 yards in a pressure situation. But, other than the 42 yarder all of his kicks are from around 25 yards...which is scary.

Punter Brandon Fields was an All-American in 2004, but was asked to change his style in 2005. Which resulted in him turning into "Just another punter". He is starting to get back into his groove, but still isnt near his old form.

MSU has looked pretty horrible returning punts and kicks so far, so dont be worried about a runback. Were something like 115 out of 119 teams in yards per kick/punt return.

I also would be suprised if Weis tried an onside kick during something on Saturday. Opposing teams have suprised us by doing onside kicks at weird times in the game.

Sparty, that Penn State game last year was one of the worst special teams performances I have ever seen at any level. Brutal.

The Ohio State one stands out more, but anyone who watched MSU vs. PSU in 2005 would use that tape as how NOT to play special teams.

It was very ugly.

Other than the fact that we run different offenses, I think we look a lot like MSU...good offense and mediocre defense. We both have weaknesses along both lines. We both have good Qb's. Lots of similarities.

I got a question that I posted on a Big 10 site. Did ND plant a flag in MSU's field in 2004? I know it was done to us last year by Sparty, but I heard we did it first. Is that true?

Any pictures?

No pictures....but here is a quote from Stanton:

"I guess nobody knew that they did it to us last year," Stanton said. "Nobody made as big of a deal out of it, I think, just because we're Michigan State and they're Notre Dame and nobody's supposed to do that to Touchdown Jesus and the Golden Dome and stuff like that. So they took it personal, but they were saying that they conquered Michigan last year by beating Michigan and Michigan State. It's all in good fun, I think for the most part."

Was it players or cheerleaders?

I think it is bush to do it and it is bush to retaliate back.

No one lets their play do the talking anymore. Sports is nothing but a bunch of disrespectful jive today. Everybody and their "look at me" bullshit.

Whoever wins the game should take their asses over to the fans, sing the alma mater and get to the showers. The hot dog crap is really getting old, no thanks to the Eastern Seaboard Programming Network.

That is a false. First off, MSU did it in 2003, so even if ND did it in 04 (which they didn't), MSU would have done it first. Secondly, I know people who were at the game in 2004; they said there was no flag planting, and I'm going to take there word on it. Thirdly, I guarantee that if ND had done it, it would have been a very big deal and all over the media. And I guarantee there would be pictures.

Here is a point that is on my mind. MSU went 4-0 last season and was handed a devastating loss - seemed like they never recovered. I hope CW has some fire this week to prevent that. Any thoughts?

I've been looking down on Sparty for years (Sparty is Michigan's version of Fredo), and if there's one consistent aspect to the program, it's this: they never handle success very well. 3-0 and playing in Least Lansing is right where you want them.

To paraphrase the Ole Ball Coach, you can't spell Music City Bowl without MSU.

We all know that MSU falls apart somewhere during the season, but they get all fired up for when they play ND, Michigan and OSU, those are the only 3 games it seems that they really come to play, afterwards, they fall to shit.

I don't recall ND players planting a flag.

Personally, I think Drew Stanton is a bit off on this one.

Almost went to Michigan State. I still think it is the second best college campus I've ever visited. Weird, I saw it 11 years ago this month as a senior in high school.

That's similar to the point I made in one of the other threads on here... this is the sort of loss that can derail an entire season.

Now, if anyone can keep this from derailing OUR season, it's Charlie Weis. But he'd better be ready to address this:

I fear that any confidence they may have gained from grinding down Georgia Tech and routing Penn State may have been shattered by this loss. If they can't get that swagger back, they'll spend the rest of the season struggling against the likes of Stanford and Air Force, get slaughtered by USC, and limp out of yet another lost bowl game.

C'mon, Charlie... bring back the nasty!

Doesn't MSU have field turf? How did they plant a flag in it?

If we are truely back, then we will bounce back from this loss with a win, like any other big time program would. If we don't come back with a win this week than the season will go to shit and all the haters are going to explode. It's time for the seniors to sack up and make something happen. Who knows, if we win out we could potentially be back in a BCS game. Every team other than Louisville and West Virginia play tough games coming up, and the before mentioned two play each other. Maybe nobody goes undefeated, who knows. All I know is if Quinn wants to be like Tom Brady he better pick his damn head up and come out to play this Saturday.
