Despite all the hoopla of the mainstream media who has all but crowned the Dems, the Santorum race they like to focus on won't go the way they expect. Internal polls are showing Santorum actually has a slight lead going into the last week. In Virginia, Allen has a bigger lead than the media is letting on. Bottom line is the Republicans will hold onto the Senate and the House. The debate over terrorist interrogation has brought into focus the differences between the two parties and Republicans are benefitting as people get to see who's with Khalid-Sheikh Muhammed and who isn't. Big loser for the Democrat Party. The White House also thinks Tony Snow has been a reason for the rebound in the polls. He consistently bests the liberal media types at the press conferences and the base has been eating this up. The press conferences are becoming some of the most watched videos on Youtube. Keep the faith.

Apologies, I thought I was posting on the Leprechaun Lounge and not the football board. I'm ashamed to admit that even on gameday, my thoughts aren't completely consumed by ND, even when playing our greatest rival.

As for Santorum - He is one of the few politicians that I like. He tells you what he thinks even if it isn't what you want to hear. Sadly I think he's going to lose (despite my one vote). Bob Casey ran the "I don't have an original idea but my dad is a legend" campaign and it seems to have worked.

Casey Wins! Santorum is absolutely no good. We're sending him home.......to Virginia!

LOL, I just filled out my absentee ballot and seriously thought about writing in somone for that race, both are idiots... I voted for three dems and two reps. The only one that I felt good about voting for was Mike Turzai, Rep, since he wrote the bill to give me a deduction for 529 contributions. Thanks Mike.

Anyway, less than an hour a way until kickoff!!!

guff, I usually agree with and I do about Casey but Santorum tells you exactly what you want hear just like they all do. I had a chance to meet the guy and I swear to god the two questions I asked him, he answered each with another question. That really annoys me. He is an ass kisser more so than any other jackass is Wash, hence the 98% voting record with GW. But Casey definitely ran the anti-incumbant, don't stick your neck out on the line, campain.

Interesting. Now, would one of the other added benefits be a screenname that flashes in day-glo orange? I need to be seen and heard(read). I'm thinking it's a minor character flaw.

Voting with the President is the anithesis of ass kissing. Santorum and the President are trying to protect the American people whether they approve or not. By voting with the President, Santorum is standing on principle against a majority of Americans. That's not ass kissing or telling people what they want to hear.

mmmm, ok.. if that's not ass kissing to the people that fund your election campain I don't know what is.. Principles... please... spare me.. Principles and Washington do not mix MAS, definition of an oxymoron.. walking the party line does not equal principle.. neither does pulling a party lever. I'm not singling either party on that claim.. I could think of two people I know in politics that have a smidge of principles, McCain and Guliani.. I like what I've heard about Baye but admittedly I know very little. he is big on lean gov't right, help me out Indianans

McCain is a great example of a man with principles. For example, you might remember McCain and Russ Feingold courageously pushed federal election reform and were ultimately successful. Whereas Feingold chose to snobbishly refuse PAC donations, even though it was legal, McCain continued to accept PAC donations. As McCain said when asked about this by a liberal member of the fourth estate: "I'm tainted by the process. We're all tainted by the process." McCain could have refused PAC money to give the illusion of principle and avoid "hypocrisy" like Feingold, sitting up in his ivory chair. Instead, McCain chose to selflessly sacrifice his political integrity to illustrate the corruption of the system for the good of his country. But then, selflessness is an oxymoron for DC politicians on the left. That said, I have been distressed by McCain's siding with the terrorists on this whole interrogation issue. I fear DC liberals are making him soft.

Giuliani would make a great president as well. Who can forget his leadership after 9/11? I've long felt not making him the head of FEMA after 9/11 was the difference between a flooded New Orleans and a dry one. The great thing about Giuliani in the White House would be a renewed focus on crime prevention. Let's not forget that crime is a federal issue and a man with hand's on experience in fighting crime will make all the difference in the world. I've heard that the Broken Window policy Giuliani brought to New York will be brought to Washington if he's elected. I've also heard that the idea of the death penalty for drug kingpins will also be considered, after being dormant for a couple decades. At this point, I'd favor Giuliani over McCain.

I can't stand Giuliani. Not only is he a social liberal, but his charisma is unbelievably overrated.

And you know what else is overrated? His response to September 11. He didn't do anything that any other mayor in the world wouldn't have done.

Running an entire country is a far cry from running a city, even if it is one of the biggest and most important in the world. With that in mind, Giuliani has absolutely no foreign policy experience and this is the time when that talent is desperately needed. We simply can't afford to have two consecutive incompetent foreign policy presidents in one of the most interventionist eras of American history.

McCain is probably the most promising guy there is in Washington. It will be a pity if he doesn't win the nomination.

McCain's got great principles. That's why one day he's condemning Falwell and others like him, and the next he's speaking at Falwell's college.

Tell that to victims' families of 9/11.

Name another mayor who responded so decisively after a grand-scale terror attack in American history.

Santorum is running on the "I vote with Bush 98% of the time" "Rumsfeld is doing a great job" and "We found weapons of mass destruction" platform. Thats why he is going to be beaten soundly. Maybe he can run again in a few years when the next Virginia seat is up.

And your point is? We did find WMD's, Rumsfeld has done a great job and voting 98% of the time with a President who is protecting the American people 100% of the time is nothing to be ashamed of. Santorum will win.

It's too powerful to ignore if becoming president is most important to you. It's just right to ignore if being principled means more to you than being president.

As for MAS, I wouldn't engage him in a debate. He's pretty obviously a caricature poster and not in earnest. It's like debating Colbert or Borat.

LMIRISH, he is running basically on that... And the Va. reference is to the fact that he is found a loophole in the tax system in Pa where if you have a residence locally in PA and your kids go to a private school elsewhere you local municipality has to pay for some portion of that. His kids go to an elite private school in va and his constituents in PA are paying for some portion of it. It's complicated and I may have some of the exact language off put that is the gist of it.

The problem is the dems put up an arrogant asshole whose daddy was a very popular polititian in PA.

It's good that we have 12M or so and have 2 such great candidates to pick from, well done dems and reps, well done.

What did he do that was decisive?

First of all, as Mayor of New York, Giuliani was the decider, so by definition, he was decisive. Secondly, when it became clear what had happened, he immediately commanded all rescue units to the scene without hesitation. Contrast this leadership with Nagin in New Orleans and you be able recognize true decisiveness.

Too often we attribute adjectives like "decisive", "honest", "principled" to people based on tangible things we can observe. If it's true that honesty "is what you do when nobody is watching", how can we truly know who is honest or principled or decisive? Of course they appear "dishonest" or "unprincipled", but that's just when we're looking. It's often said that our eyes play tricks on us and no moreso than when we're watching. Well, I'm not watching and I'm seeing a lot more honest, decisive, principled men than some of you brainwashed cynics.

There are two things I respect Santorum for:

1. His position on the Global War on Terrorism. He is one of the few people - Lieberman is one of the others- that realize that this is the fight of our lifetime. While I'm not 100% satisfied in the way the war is being fought, it is a fight that must be one. I want guys like Santorum in Senate to counter Durbin, Boxer, Biden, et al.

2. His push to reform Social Security. It's an outdated system that isn't working anymore. It will cost us billions if it isn't fixed and it could cripple the country in the process. If you're in your 30s and think you're going to get a SS check when you retire then I have some beachfront property in Oklahoma I'd love to sell you. The problem with his plan is that it is too easily demagogued. "He's trying to ruin Social Security, He's trying to starve seniors blah blah blah"

You don't think it was the fire fighters and police responding to 911 calls and their own common sense? I don't really know the logistics of the response, but my guess is that Giuliani had nothing to do with it.

You know what would have been really decisive? If Giuliani had said "okay, there are people on the top of those buildings looking for help... I know it'll be risky, but let's send a few choppers up there to see whether they can't rescue some of them.

Here are instances of 'decisiveness' I can think of from that day:

1. Terrorists taking over planes and crashing them into buildings
2. Passengers taking over Flight 93
3. Firefighters and police officers rushing into the buildings
4. ...people choosing to jump from the towers

None of these involves Giuliani. Any decision that Giuliani made on that day pales in comparison to the four examples from above.

There is no fight of our lifetime, or if there is, it's not this, it's something more philosophical. How many terror attacks were there in the US before 9/11, when there was relatively low focus on these things, and relatively lax security, and Afghanistan was still run by the Taliban? How many deaths? 9/11 was unfortunate and shocking and made for good copy but it was

a) a freak thing, a fluke; literally, a one in a million shot

b) not that big a deal in actual, concrete terms, in and of itself- ie loss of life, destruction of property; this is as compared with normal wars and battles

Terrorism is just the latest political crutch. It's more a PR construction than a legitimate threat. It's a threat like communism was a threat.
