if youve watched the videos you have to admit he looks pretty good. atleast against hawaii competition. his hands look incredible like david grimes and he looks like he as a second gear once he finds an opening. i have to say i believe this guy can work his way onto the field in a couple of years and be something. he looks like david grimes 2.0. hes faster, can catch just as well, isnt afraid to hit people, and doesnt have back spasms.

I am totally fine with this kid coming to ND, regardless of whether it had anything to do with Te'o's commitment. I really don't think ND has to worry so much about a "wasted" scholarship, its not like every single 4 & 5 star recruit in the country is going to come to South Bend next year. W/ the size of this class and the few 5th years, they'll still have room to take a great class of 20-25 next year if Charlie can get them to sign on the dotted line. And I always like having depth, and an extra 3-star doesn't hurt any class this size imo. The kid may never be a star, but he has great hands, decent speed, and looks like a great route runner. Kind of like Steve Smith (of USC and the Giants, not the great one on the Panthers). I'd say he had a pretty productive college career. You never know what he'll turn into. As someone already said, is it really that inconceivable that he could turn out to have a very good career, and Te'o could wind up doing nothing? I'm not saying I think it's going to happen in this particular case, but it does happen a lot w/ these recruits that these great 5-stars do nothing, but then you have a 2/3-star who turns out to be Michael Crabtree, as someone already pointed out.

Crabtree was a four star from Texas.

Not according to Scout.com. He was a 2-star.

And even if Scout has it wrong for some reason, the point is these little-heralded recruits often turn into great players, and these well-known 5-star guys don't work out all the time.

WOW!! Couldnt agree more. Star system is overrated. If I'm not mistaken Brady Quinn was a 3 star??? Anyway I agree with you.

Check out Rivals for the four star ranking. Of the three big recruiting sites, I value Rivals much more than Scout and ESPN. ESPN is terrible and Scout is still a leap ahead of ESPN. Rivals I take the greatest stock in. If they say he is a four star, then he is a four star.

Per the highlight film and the accolades he rec'd from the Under Armour all-star game, the kid can definitely play ... regardless of what star rating he is listed as per the sites!

i dont trust rivals for anything. rivals is the least trustworthy of the systems because they change the kids ranking and stars based on where he verbals. so what does that say about what they actually KNOW about the kid? it says the know squat. if he is a 2-star and commits to usc then jumps up to a 3 or 4-star then that is bs. plus rivals will move a kid from a 5-star to a 4-star just because he got injured in one game. he could come back and put up huge numbers but rivals already moved him down and wont let him back up. plus they have a personal vendetta against notre dame. if you verbal to notre dame expect your star status to take a huge hit. rivals just blows. i only value the scout information. they know their stuff and dont flip flop worse than a democrat.

You have to understand that I KNOW the bias. Even knowning that once you commit to the Irish results in a mandatory deduction of a star, I still think that (since they have premium information) they take the most stock in the players and their performace. USC verbals don't get a star bump. If that is the case, Telfort and Starling would have become 5 stars within three seconds of signing their LOIs.

Scout is too vague, ESPN is sucky. Rivals updates and looks at the overall portfolio of an athletes performance. My Two cents. You don't have to agress with me of you don't want to. I've followed recruiting for four years hardcore now and I think Rivals is the best site for evaluating student talent.

Being a short guy myself who just never was looked at by the ND recruiting staff when I was in high school (it might have been because I fall over when the grass is too thick), I say kudos to Roby Toma for receiving a scholarship from the greatest football institution in the world. Even if Toma never makes the field as a receiver, I see an excellent candidate to fill the empty position of gunner on special teams. Mike Anello's little brother from a Hawaiian mother!!!

with all that being said...he won't see the field ever. Maybe special teams if he's lucky. We had all Americans riding the pine at WR, plus we just added another all American. If he was a 2 for 1 then yes I'm glad he's here, other then that again i say what a waste.

i said that when UCLA offered him after Hillard committed. I figured they were gonna offer Manti's entire HS team.

You need to go watch the movie Rudy again. :) Who would have ever thought Anello would be schollie worthy, but I think he was a vital piece of the puzzle last year. He made our special teams, imo.

He looks like David grimes to me, with room to grow still. Plus this helps with Hawai'i in the future, who has 20-25 D1 athletes a year. I can sleep very well with this news.

I agree he is a Joey Getherall type receiver...he won the best hands competion for WR at the Under Armor game. I think he is one of those kids that will be a 3-4 WR his senior year but will contribute eventually. Plus he is a great excuse for Teo to come back after his mission which is what is key here!

He won that beating all those all americans I hear so much about. He doesn't have good hands. He has excellent, superb, fantastic hands.

trust me i never need to see Rudy again...lol I've seen too many times. I did say in my last post i hope he proves me wrong, and i truly hope he does. I just find it odd he had pretty much zero offers from big schools. Then Hillard picks UCLA and they offer Toma who excepts. Now UCLA is thinking this helps to entice Te'o to UCLA. Te'o picks Notre Dame and Toma gets offers from ND and Hawaii in the same day. I believe Toma was being used by UCLA and they dropped him when Te'o picked the Irish. All That being said, his HL video was pretty sweet and i think he'll be a nice special teams player. If he works his tail off and makes an impact on the offense then that is fantastic too. All that matters is he's Irish now and i accept Toma with open arms.

Yes he does appear to have great hands; bgut what I liked about his videos is that he reminded me of Stovall the way he blocks down field. He doesn't back down.

You are aware that Toma himself says he got the offer like 3 weeks ago right? So if you figure back to the time that we started hearing rumors about Oliver going to Tenn, its puts his offer right in that window. Maybe he was the legit backup plan to Oliver since they had seen him play on more then one instance but they just couldn't offer him because he wasn't a fit earlier in the cycle already having 2 WR's in this class. Then Oliver left and they gave him the offer. Makes sense to me.

Robby "Roma" Toma.....I knew it was Toma just had a brain fart. I thought when I saw his name, oh maybe he is related to the famous groundskeeper George Toma.....but Charlie would be happy if the pizza chain owners son was on his way to ND....I know I know, low blow.

he was also 6'5'' and ran a 4.4 (according to Scout) and the best player in Indiana. Scout also had him a 4 star and the 25th best WR. He also had multiple offers from Big Ten schools. But you're right Samardzija put in the work to add 25 lbs of muscle and become the best WR in school history. Toma isn't blessed with size, but he does have speed and great hands. If he puts the work in who knows what he'll become...good luck at ND Roby.

Toma may not be the biggest, strongest or fastest player on the field, but he will give everything he has and then some. He has an exceptional burst and a great ability to get seperation in press coverage. When the ball is in the air, Tomafeels it is his and he will make every effort to come down with it. Very polished receiver that runs exceptional routes and has outstanding ball skills. Bob Lichtenfels/Scout.com

I think we could use him

is the Shark the best WR ever at ND? just out of curiosity, isn't that debatable? Don't get me wrong I loved the kid.
