SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- John "Jack" Zilly, who played on two national championship football teams for Notre Dame in the 1940s, has died. He was 88.

The school said Saturday that Zilly died Friday in Narragansett, R.I.

Zilly was a right end on Notre Dame's 1943 championship team. He then joined the Navy and served two years in the Pacific during World War II. He returned to school and celebrated another national title in 1946.

Zilly was a sixth-round draft pick by San Francisco of the All-American Football Conference. He wound up playing for the Los Angeles Rams from 1947 to 1951 and the Philadelphia Eagles in 1952.

Zilly joined the Montana State coaching staff in 1955 and spent three years coaching ends at Notre Dame from 1956 to 1958.

Can you imagine the stories this guy could tell? Soon the whole WWII generation will be gone. These guys deserve the utmost respect.

I love seeing these kind of guys shuffling along, makes you slow down a little and remember to reflect once in a while. Life is too damn fast these days.

The Greatest Generation. Before my Dad passed I used to sit down at the American Legion with him sometimes. Very few WWII vets left but I could sit & listen to them for hours on end & never want leave.

Certainly not the guy I wanna be lining up across the LOS from. Wins A NC then goes off to fight in the Pacific for 2 years only to come back & win another. Amazing! Nothing but love & respect. RIP

those are men who have seen things that none of us will ever experience... please god! when you can get them to talk about it they really do have the most amazing stories ever told. i could listen all day.

its a shame that todays kids will never really get the chance to hear the stories from the men who actually went through it. as powerful and moving as a movie can be you just never get the same feeling as hearing direct from the mouth of a man who lived it.
