Gardner's arrival adds another candidate to Michigan quarterback competition - Campus Rivalry: College BCS Football News, Recruiting, Game Picks, and More - USATODAY.com

The competition for the quarterback position at Michigan will be between three players this spring with the early enrollment of Devin Gardner from nearby Inkster High School.
Greg Carter, Gardner's high school coach, thinks his former signal caller can challenge for immediate playing time because his scheme is similar to what Rich Rodriguez uses.
"We definitely have a similar offense," said Carter, who hasn't spoken to Gardner since he enrolled. "A lot of the things they do may be what made them think he could do well there. We run the spread, have four receivers at times, sometimes three receivers and two backs. So we play similar."
Rodriguez might be willing to play Gardner after a 5-7 season in 2009 has him on the hot seat. He played two freshman quarterbacks last year with Tate Forcier starting all 12 games and Denard Robinson also seeing action that mostly took advantage of his running ability.

Sorry Mr. Forcier.... You've got 3 minutes to clean out your personal items....Devin's gonna need this space.

yep. Forcier was never the answer for DickRod. i see him as more of a utility type qb who may take a snap here and there, but if UM is going to turn things around they will need Gardner to make some significant contributions in addition to something resembling a defense.

Everybody here in Michigan is frightened because Gardner had an absolutely atrocious performance at Ford Field in the state championship game in his division.

Not so sure that Forcier won't be the starter. RR has to win.NOW. I don't think the UM fanbase will take another average season or live with the excuse of starting a true frosh if things go south. Why go through the growing pains last year just to go through it again this season, especially with your job on the line?

If Forcier is rehabbed, I'm with you. Garderner has to have a great Spring to unseat him. Forcier was a freshman and made freshman mistakes. Unfortunately he didn't make enough of them against us.

scUM's 2010 schedule is NOT that daunting, so as much as I hate the bastards, I believe they'll have a decent season. 3 big away games .... ND, PSU and O$U. Then the "toughest" home games are MSU, Wisc. and Iowa. The rmaining games are puds ... UConn, Bowling Green, Indiana, UMass, Ill., and PU. I suspect they'll win enough games to keep Dick Rod around. Just as long as the Irish put a good ass wuppin' on them, that's what counts the most!!!

The best case scenario here is that DickRod gets blown out of town after another subpar year. UM will be in shambles for years after not going after the typical UM recruit.

However, saying that, the possibility exists of a Harbaugh/Miles resuscitation of the Skunkbear.

The best case scenario for us is UM wins just enough to keep the Wolverweasels at bay for as many years as possible. 9 wins with a win over OSU and a loss to ND every year. They'll grouse over an annual ND loss but beating the Bucks will put that out of mind.

Hang on RichRod, RichRod hang on ...

Not so jason. Might seem that way, but the only ones that have been banned lately have spammers and trolls. The person that was banned yesterday had already been given a one day banning, then yesterday he came back and wrote about 30 posts in just over 2.5 hrs, half of which had to be banned by mods. He was posting crap in recruits' threads despite being warned many times and upset and antoganized many, many members in the process, and IMO the mod that banned him was absolutely in the right. If you had been around yesterday afternoon you'd be happy he was gone...

Figured I should come throw my two cents in on this.

DG will be a very important player in RichRod's offence, just not this year. You're crazy if you think Michigan will start a QB with no experience for the third straight year, just not going to happen. Tate will have a seasoned line, receivers with a better handle on the O, and more of a grasp on the offence himself. Only thing lacking will be Brown and Minor, a big loss, but some of the younger backs looked good towards the end of the year when both were hurt.

Maybe I'm in the minority; but did Tate really have that bad a year, I don't think so. He was a true Freshman what were you expecting. Besides, I would think this fan base would have a little more respect for Tate's abilities.

Will we be burning books soon too? LOL

I unfortunately agree with M Go Blow.....Tate was a true Freshmen, he did pretty good all things considered and will be a thorn in ND's side for the next few years. Maybe someone will beat him out but I doubt it is next year, I think he locks that position down next year.

It wasn't that Tate had a bad year, it was that the media blew him up WAAAAYYYYYY too much, giving Hesiman talk and saying he was better than JC and yada yada yada. I remember against Mich St, he was friggin awful all game, brought them back late despite almost throwing 2 god-awful picks that he just threw up for grabs and nobody caught, and then threw a horrible pick in OT. All ESPN talked about was his comeback, and they didn't even show the OT pick that cost them the game. I couldn't believe it...he could do no wrong.

Now, against ND, he was unbelievable. But so was pretty much every QB. But once teams figured him out, he struggled big time and was even benched. ESPN in their infinite wisdom kinda glossed over that in their never-ending love of Tim Tebow and Matt Barkley.

I think Tate will be your starter and I think he'll have a good year. The kid can obviously play, and he'll improve. But even you as a UM fan would have to admit that it's worrisome that he regressed as the season went on...

I don’t think he regressed as much as everyone thinks, a lot of it had to do with injuries and our schedule getting harder. We played OSU, Iowa, Penn State and Wisconsin all four dominated high powered offences in their bowl games, msu was no slouch either. Throw in some freshman mistakes and it’s real easy to get beat. Is Tate the answer? No. But he is enough of a player to have DG redshirt his freshman year, yes. DG really needs to work on his throwing. Honestly I think if Tate was the size of DG or had the speed of Robinson, this wouldn’t even be a discussion. But he isn’t, so it is, and he will get beat out by DG eventually just not this year.

He was much, much worse against Iowa.

i basically agree, but i would add that by the end of the season, Gardner should be seeong some playing time during meaningul parts of games. beyond the upcoming season i think it would be a bad sign if Tate is the starter. he is a mediocre passer and while quick for a qb, does not posses anything beyond fair speed. he is small and seemed to be excessively winded at the end of games and trying to shake off big hits.
