Gardner's arrival adds another candidate to Michigan quarterback competition - Campus Rivalry: College BCS Football News, Recruiting, Game Picks, and More - USATODAY.com
The competition for the quarterback position at Michigan will be between three players this spring with the early enrollment of Devin Gardner from nearby Inkster High School.
Greg Carter, Gardner's high school coach, thinks his former signal caller can challenge for immediate playing time because his scheme is similar to what Rich Rodriguez uses.
"We definitely have a similar offense," said Carter, who hasn't spoken to Gardner since he enrolled. "A lot of the things they do may be what made them think he could do well there. We run the spread, have four receivers at times, sometimes three receivers and two backs. So we play similar."
Rodriguez might be willing to play Gardner after a 5-7 season in 2009 has him on the hot seat. He played two freshman quarterbacks last year with Tate Forcier starting all 12 games and Denard Robinson also seeing action that mostly took advantage of his running ability.
