PSU: I don't get it...

Had the great misfortune of having to work on the Penn State campus today. Even though it's only about 2.5 hours from here, I'd never been anywhere close to it....and now that I have, I can't understand how we could ever lose a recruit to them.

What a pit....that campus has ZERO ambiance compared to ND. Maybe because it's so big, I dunno, but it is nothing like walking around ND. I guess the big attraction is the statue of the lion, which I saw driving around. Whoopee! The only thing they have that ND doesn't is College Ave. which has every sort of store, restaurant and bar under the sun.

They must have one hell of an athletic dorm system for those kids....otherwise I just don't get it. Went by the stadium....what an ugly ass monstrosity that thing is! The only thing it has going for it is that it's big. It's uglier than the 70s era multipurpose bowls. And I know JoePa has been there since time began but there's just something wrong about putting up a statue/monument to a guy who's the current coach.

Oh...despite our bad season, I still wore my ND Gettysburg hat. No one said dick to me. Alot of looks but no comments.

All in all, very unimpressed with Penn State.

Amen JBox...I still wear ND gear every day to work and fly my flags in front of the house and off my car window proudly. That will never change.

You are clueless if you don't understand why a recruit would choose PSU over ND. Now, I wouldn't because i'm an ND fan but PSU offers many things ND doesn't.

1. A ton of hot girls
2. Every bar under the sun as you said
3. True tailgaiting, ND tailgaiting is pretty weak in comparison
4. A Stadium that is actually loud, not full of senior citizen alumni
5. Parties parties and then more parties
6. Easier academic requirements

Also, not sure what you were looking at but PSU is a very nice campus, now not as nice as ND but I don't think any college is.

There are many reasons why a recruit would choose ND over PSU and they are obvious, but don't think there is no reasons why a recruit would choose PSU over ND. Also, we haven't lost many recruits to PSU. I worry much much more about OSU and USC.

I was neither...I was making the point that I didn't care that I was working at Penn State; it wasn't gonna keep me from wearing a ND hat. In Central PA, you're either a PSU or ND fan...it's a pretty heated rivalry among fans that invites alot of trash talking.

They must have been in hiding yesterday.

Football players tailgate?

It took me a while to find the right building so I drove around the campus quite a bit...it ended up being on the side closest to College Ave & Atherton. After I was done, I went looking for the stadium(s) and then doubled back down College Avenue. While it's much bigger, it doesn't compare to ND at all. It has zero atmosphere compared to ND.

State College is the typical big college town. Just about everything in that town is geared toward students, which are the very basis of the economy. I could see how it would be fun to be a PSU student, but it's really not my cup of tea. I much prefer the small town atmosphere of South Bend. That said, I'm not sure that would have been my preference 20 years ago when it mattered.

I know State College very well, as my mother's side of the family is from there and the surrounding towns of Centre Hall and Bellefonte (a very nice old town). I would certainly not describe it as a pit by any means.

Haha, my mailman asked me when I was going to burn my flag that I have hanging out if front of my house. I gave him that polite laugh while muttering "I hope you burn in hell" under my breath.

It's a pit relative to ND is all I meant....certainly nothing wrong with the town (or school) itself. It just doesn't have any appeal in my view. If I was a high school football player and went on visits to PSU & ND, the choice would be easy.

My flag's been out all season and will stay out until probably January when I'll take it down and put up my normal Irish flag.

I was there a couple times, always wearing my ND hat and shirt/jacket. I got a girl to sing the ND Fight Song at the top of her lungs. I hate PSU more than I hate any other team in any sport. They suck!

Girls at PSU don't come out during the daytime when it is under 60 degrees. THe players don't tailgate but their parents do. We all know how big an influence parents are on their childrens decision.

You take an official to ND have a great time seeing and meeting everyone.

Take an official to ND you have a great time seeing and meeting everyone then go out at night to bars or parties (bars if the team is doing real well possibly) and meet hot chick after hot chick and have a lot of fun.

Like you I'd choose ND in a second over PSU because I am all ND and realize the life long benefits of an ND education, but these stud athletes don't all want that. At psu you can get a park rec management degree that is so darn easy and live for football and girls if you so choose.

I see yer point(s)....though parents wanting to tailgate and pushing their kid's decision based on that is wrong on so many levels. I was a pretty dumb teenager but I gotta believe it wouldn't be too tough of a decision. The only way it might be was if I grew up a ND hater (but then I wouldn't be considering a football scholarship from ND I imagine).

Having not been lucky enough to attend a big name college, if asked to close my eyes and picture what such a place looked like, the image would be a whole heap closer to ND than PSU.

This past weekend I was at a sporting goods store and the store clerk saw my ND gear... he followed me around talking shit the whole time I was there... stating he was a USC and Michigan fan...

He even grabbed the musical bottle opener off the selves and followed me around with it playing SC's fight song unstop... I was pretty pissed as I did NOTHING but wear a Notre Dame hat to bring this on... so as I am checking out he says my card is declined... I say ver quickly and matter of factly, "No it's not."

He states how impressive it was that I called his bluff so quickly (I'd love to hear his manager's thoughts on harrassing costumers and stating their cards are declined when they aren't) He also said that most people freak out when he says that... I then come back with... "I'm a Notre Dame fan, I work hard and earn a lot of money... my cards don't decline... unlike punk ass Michigan fans who work at stores like this for minimum wage... that's why I'm the buyer, and you just work for the seller."

and I left.

;)
