Did you all see that Ron Powlus may be coming back to ND to take the role of Director of Player Development replacing Jimmy Gonzales??? Talk about an ironic position for Powlus!

I do like the fact that ND is going back to Domers to rebuild itself.

Aero - It is pretty ironic. Now all he needs is to bring in Arnaz Battle & Carlos Campbell as his assistants.

Rip - So basically TB's going to be the campus pimp? I could see him in a blue & gold zoot suit.

Is Powlus' lack of development as player his fault?

Powlus is the perfect man for the job. The most heralded recruit in recent history; he failed to even scratch the surface of expectations; from a football standpoint everything that could have gone wrong did, and despite all of the bad things he still has a good feeling about his experience at ND. That's the guy I want for that job.

Sure Tim Brown loves ND. He won a Heisman and is one the best ND player of all time. What's not to love. But Powlus, if he said he regretted his choice to go ND, could you fault him for it?

I always felt sorry for Powlus... he had a ridiculous amount of expectation and reputation heaped on him, and yet he didn't believe any of it. And that was kind of his problem, actually. I remember his first year, where he put up epic numbers against Northwestern for the opener, then followed that up with a pressure-cooker game against Michigan that went down to the wire. It all came down to one last dramatic drive by the Irish, led by Powlus, and he couldn't deliver. And that seemed to permanently stunt his own confidence in himself. He had talent, but nowhere near enough talent to keep up with the hype around him, and it nearly destroyed him as a player.

And that's precisely why he's the guy I want in charge of player development. He's seen what can happen and how horribly, horribly wrong it can go. He fully understands the consequences and what's at stake, because he's lived it.

Welcome back, Ron!

The fact that Weis is getting alumni involved in the football aspects of the program is a giant step in the right direction.

Please do not blame Ron Powlus because Lou Holtz had him running the option. I fail to see how that and Beano Cook's big fat mouth are his fault. Holds 20-something school passing records. Great citizen and graduate that did not need football for his future.

His hiring on Weis' staff brings him full circle as far as I'm concerned.

Hey hey hey, I never said I had a problem w/ Ronnie coming back, I don't have a problem w/ any alumni coming back to help the team (well, 'cept maybe Duerson). I just think its ridiculously ironic. And I didn't say it was his fault he didn't develop, just that he didn't develop while he was here. Hence the irony that he's in charge of "player development" to me at least. Its not like I don't think he'll do a good job, I just think its funny.

powlus is a definite class act. he never lived up to the expectations because he wasn't an option quarterback. but the fact that he's a successful individual who loves notre dame is exactly why i'm so glad he has this position. the fact that their recruiting team is made up of alumni is going to be huge for the recruiting efforts. people that sell need to have a passion on what they're selling, and powlus definitely has a passion for notre dame.
