What's wrong with Charlie? These two games were the worst disply of play calling I've seen in a long time. I know the O-line sucks but you have to pass longer than 5 yards occassionally?! Mix it up some!!!! This is going to be a veeery long season.

I have no doubt all those times that Clausen was hanging in the pocket for 5 seconds (praying for an open receiver) or running for his life...that Weis did not tell him to do that.

When Weis calls a pass play and the ball does not fly, someone is clearly not getting open or the Defense is chasing the QB.

I think the D is MOSTLY fixed and will improve.

The OL is the next point to fix.

What was wrong specifically?

I don't think he called the sacks, or the scrambles, or the WRs not getting open.

There were a few calls I did not like, but for the most part I am not clear on what you did not like.

Agree with you on several points you make, especially D being just about there. I tell you JC is the real deal. Now if only we can get the OLine "fixed" so jimmy does not get hurt and get a serious drive going with some time to work it.

I think his main concern with jimmy and the short passes was that he wanted to get Jimmy's confidence level up. He knows that a quarterbacks mind set can ruin a team in a heart beat. If he would have had Jimmy come out and try to throw all over the field and get intercepted a couple of times, how do you think he would have felt? Not to mention the Media being all over him. Right now the Media is saying well, He didn't make any spectacular plays or long passes but he played a pretty solid game. Especially considering it was in Happy Valley in front of 110,000. If he would have come in and thrown three or four interceptions JUST IMAGINE what kind of field day the media could have had. I think it was good coaching. Not that he would have thrown these interceptions just an easy way to minimize the possibility.

Some good points here. I want to see more of the "Nasty" attitude Weis has mentioned. And I don't mean it in regard to stupid penalties (ala Travis Thomas or Justin Brown). The D is on its way. It'd be nice to see the OL not be so pathetic though.

When you have a line that can't hold a block for more than 2 seconds then the only play you can run is a 5 yrd pass or your QB will end up in the hospital. It also doesn't help that you have the WORST running game in the NCAA!!!

Let's put it this way: Clausen's stats were better than Morelli's, and he was under constant pressure and had basically no running game at all.

It sucks to think of how much RB talent we have that can't do anything. Even Darius Walker had 700+ yds as a freshman. Aldridge is a 5 star soph, and will be luck to break 100yds this season at this pace. Where were JA and Hughes? We need to get Mondo some touches, but not on RB dives.

I like your attitude. I also hope you're right that we needn't despair completely about the o-line. Only time will tell ... all I can say is that after today I'm genuinely looking forward to the rest of the season.

Yeah, great coaching. We wouldn't want to let anything like, oh, I don't know, WINNING THE GAME get in the way of that now, would we?

Why not go for it on fourth downs , the downs after Zibby interception. Look The Mad Scientist knows this a rebuilding year. Why not play the season that way?

1.Call your fourth down play, if it doesn't work. You instilling in your team that in a tough environment, sometime field goals is not enough.

2, That field goal didn't make know one field good. Not starting the drive inside the 5 yrd line.

3. Then you can see how the defense play's, when they have someone penned near ther goaline.

I totally agree! The plays he calls may not be that bad, however the line just can't hold it long enough! Although I have one idea, and that would be throw short quick passes to the "all-american" TE John, Carlson. You have to get the ball to be All-American!

No matter what has happen the last two games, the future is very bright for the Irish. Jimmy showed more composure thatn any freshman I have ever seen to include BQ when he finally started. The kid is the real deal!

Need to get that O-line unscrewed, as what is going on there is totally unacceptable at this level.

When he did have time there was obviously nobody open or he would've have thrown. I thought he looked good and made some nice throws. There is a reason why the playcalling is calling for short passes and screens, and if you can't figure it out why then u shouldn't watch football.

But I also think that those of you who want to see CW open up the playbook are going to get what you want next week: UM has been KILLED by spread offenses in these first two weeks, and I think we'll see plenty of plays run out of five-wide, spread-type formations on Saturday.

There's a difference between 'nasty' and stupid. I thought that altercation TT had on the punt return was a momentum shifter in the game. Not necessarily THE key one, but one that certainly screwed up a big play. We've got veterans making mistakes out there (Lambert on the punt return TD was unforgiveable), which there is no reason for.

Too many penalties, too many errors, too many foolish play calls. Now on the brighter side, Jimmy played like a Senior and is the future for ND football.

play calling was not the issue at all. the o-line is the root cause to every issue on the offensive side of the ball.
1. without time the qb can't set his feet and throw a ball downfield.
2. without lanes the rb's can't carry for more than 2yds a carry.
3. without time the wr's can't complete a route.
4. numerouse false starts and holding calls are drive killers.

i like the skilled players on this offense. it's the line that is killing drives/game. CW is calling plays that are quick hits for a reason. he knows the o-line is awful. he can't call deep routes because they won't work. case in point the deep pass nullified by a penalty last night. (clausen was hammered on the play) and we were called for holding, i believe. amazing clausen got the ball off accuratly.

the defense looks okay to me. i am not sure that this group of linebackers are suited for a 3-4 scheme though. they get tired in the second half and the other team starts to run freely on them. the irish need physical LB's to make this scheme work. (cw has a handful of young ones coming)

the secondary looks good to me. (i can't believe i just typed that) the corners are fast as lightning and are good coverage cb's. the safeties are still biting a bit, but that will improve. i love the d-line they are playing good ball and getting decent pressure at times.

the special teams are just brutal. i am very surprised by this, the coverage teams are pathetic. the kickers are bad. (punter is decent).

travis thomas, i am very sad with his play this year. he isn't productive tooting the rock and is missing plays on special teams. his personal fould was awful last night. i would have benched him.
