Were McNeil, Jackson, and Ryan on special teams, I don't remember seeing them out there. I could have missed them though.

I've seen so many different lists for that. one list had 10 freshmen playing, another had 9 and another had 11. I don't know which one is true.

I saw with my own eyes Young, Richardson, Walls, Prince, Brown, Gaines, West, and McNeil. so Richardson definitely got skipped.

I see some saw Jackson and Ryan. I've heard that Yeatman played as well. Who knows?

I think it was Walls that got burnt by C. Johnson up the right sideline, and richard jackson played on special teams.

Walls didn't get burned. He was stride for stride with him. But he didn't recognize Johnson going up for the ball and turn to look for it. He was in position. He just didn't play it right.

We've been over this. Walls did get burned. It's not a big deal, it was his first night and it was against an all world guy. But he got burned. He couldn't look back for the ball because he was behind Johnson and chasing all the way. Then he only caught Johnson because CJ had to stop to catch the ball.

Walls did get burned but we won the game and he is going to be rerunning that play in his sleep.
McNeil got in on special teams and was down covering the kickoff like a man possessed. At New England the coaches made it known that if you made tackles on special teams they would find a place for you on the roster.

Gaines got some playing time? didnt see that.

how did he do?

Gaines was definitely in on the play when Sergio Brown got called for the block in the back on a punt return. He looked fine. I didn't really notice anything in particular.

Also, I heard that Toryn Smith was in for goalline on the TD we gave up? did anyone else see that?

I was surprised to see Sam Young is already 19. That explains part of his early PT as a freshman. Jashaad Gaines turns 20 in December.

It appears Jimmy Clausen isn't the only one entering college older than the typical freshman.

Pretty common practice today: hold your kid back for athletic purposes.

Mommys and Daddys hold Johnny back a year so he is physically ahead by a year for football.

This might not be the case for Young and Gaines, but it Probably had nothing to do with grades.

It was Calvin Johnson folks, not Calvin and Hobbes. The guy just happens to be the best WR in these United States.

It was also Walls', a freshmen, first Division I football game. In two years, Walls and McNeil will have offensive coordinators on ND's schedule reaching for the Jack Daniels.

I'm pretty sure Walls has forgotten that play already. He's focused on Williams and Butler now.

He won't need to rerun it in his sleep. We'll all see plenty of Calvin Johnson highlights this year.

It could also at times be a matter of when the birthday falls. Some kids start school a year later because they just barely make the age requirement but are not quite ready to start.

For example, my son's birthday is in October, only a few weeks after school starts each year. He's only turning 2, but we are already discussing holding him back one year. That way, he will be one grade ahead of his little brother who is 19 months younger.
