When will ND stop the tradition of allowing visiting teams to bring their own conference affiliated officials with them? This inane practice has burned us more than once. Does anyone find it to be a real coincidence that Pete Carroll decided NOT to use instant replay and that the game was decided in the final seconds on a play that really needed to be looked at by instant replay to make sure the ball was placed at the proper yard line and that the clock was reset to the exact time when the ball was fumbled out of bounds? Old Pete was right down there harassing the officials to ensure he got a "fair" ruling.

At the least, ND should change this practice. I believe they should bring in conference officials from either a conference that is not involved in the game being played, or just use Big East officials for all home games. Why put our games at risk with the possibility of having "homer" refs helping out our opposition? I'm not saying it actually happens because most refs try to call an honest game. But with todays pressures and the dollars attached to which teams go to the big money bowls (in which the conferences share in the proceeds) it makes the temptation too great....like making a non-call on having a teammate pushing the runner over the goal line?????????

The guys in the strips are human beings just like us, they aren't going to catch everything with the naked eye, they do the best job they can; considering the situation I would say they did a decent job throughout the game, maybe there at the end they got a little jumbled up but who could say they would not have been in a lil awe there at the end of the game and miss something?

I just saw Weis on TV, he said he thought the Leinart fumble should've been spotted at the two, he also said one of USC's assistant coaches called timeout which is a personal foul

I just heard the same thing on Mike Francesca's show. They also showed a clear iso picture of Bush pushing Leinart with both hands into the end zone, after he had been initially stopped!

Y'all are sounding like Michigan fans again...

"The refs screwed us! It's so unfaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrr!"

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. If we stop 'em on 4th and 9, we win. If we make that second FG, we win. If we turn that FG drive into a touchdown, we win. We had every opportunity to seal the victory, and we didn't.

The best way to avoid a ref's bad call costing you the game is to not put the game in the ref's hands to begin with. We lost the game, not the refs.

Move on.

That is a problem. I am an offical for High School, and JC Football myself. When a crew works together, you get a group that knows each other and has a repore with each other, the officals are the third team out there. There is a familiartity with each other, and splitting that up can sometimes can lead to bad calls, or non-calls. Take a look at the NFL playoffs. The always split crews up for those games, and far be it from me to ever agree with Madden, but he has a point when he says that it isn't good for the game. You work with a group, and you should stick with them. I believe that Notre Dame should just have Big East officals for games and let that be the end of it.

I say get a MAC crew. By far and away the most unbiased.

The confusion at the end of that game was pretty intense.

Fourth and 8, boys. The refs didn't cost ND the game. ND cost ND the game. A 60 yard pass on fourth and 8 and Quinn's pass to Schwapp on third down being too high, then a missed field goal.

These errors will hurt you against anyone, especially one of the greatest collections of talent in college football history.

BYU this Saturday. USC next year.

Very well stated! Who would of thought this time last year we would have had a chance in this game. Coach Weis is setting the foundation for a dominant program for years to come. He took a team that lost to this same team in 2003 and 2004 by 31 points and made this a game. We should all be very proud of how far this program has come so far, so fast!

Thank You, Coach Weis! Thank You, for bringing football back to South Bend!

The refs are always going to make errors- we all can agree with that. I think that the problem is that we (as fans) are becoming used to instant replay. I actually wondered "replay that", and the second it came to mind - the second I realized carrol dismissed it. I am not perfect, so I do not expect the refs to be. This is why I feel replay should be used automatically in stadiums that have it, or can get it. It is the most accurate call, even if it is not in your teams favor. The side line ref marked the ball at the two first, and then looked to see if Lienart had the ball in the end zone - good job, but the play moved so fast that he did not even see the ball fly right over his head. That is why we should use the technology we have. To get it right.
