okay,I see the defense this year thread has been brought back up.
has anyone really watched ohio state play this year?I have a little, but havn't pay any attention to their offense to the extent that, I don't know who their key players are,or how well they pass and/or run the ball.

anyone want to talk about ohio state a little in case we get matched up against them?

I've seen quite a bit of them. It would be a good matchup and a tough game.

Offensively, they did not really start clicking until the second half of the season. Early on, their entire offense revolved around Troy Smith, a very athletic QB, running out of the pocket. In recent weeks, though, his passing game has improved greatly and the numbers have been big. I will point out, though, that their schedule has been much softer since the Penn St. game. A game in which their offense was anemic.

They have three very fast WR's. Ted Ginn is the big name, but he's probably the third best WR on the team. He's always a threat to take it the distance on offense or on special teams. IF, and it's a big if, he hangs onto the ball. His hands and seemingly his concentration are bad.

Santonio Holmes is their best WR. Not has fast as Ginn, but probably only Reggie Bush is. Holmes has better hands and runs better routes. If he comes out this year, he may be the first WR taken. Their third WR is Gonzalez, I think his play is better than Ginn's. His straight line speed is great, but he's not as shifty.

Their RB Pittman has quietly had a 1,200 yard season with much of that coming against the second half schedule.

Their offense can score, and I expect them to against our defense. But in a shootout, the winner is often the offense that makes less mistakes. I would expect more mistakes out of their O.

Their defense is as advertised. They are very hard to run on. Their D-line is not as good as Tennessee's but their LB corps is the best in the country, hands down. AJ Hawk may be the best defensive player in the country. He is big and very fast. He is a big reason their run D is stellar. It is hard to hit big numbers running draws against them because of his quickness and reaction. Unfortunately, our strength in the running game is DW's vision on draw plays.

Their LB unit took a hit when Bobby Carpenter went down. If Hawk's the best LB in the country, I'd say Carpenter is no worse than 5th or 6th. He was also their third down pass rush specialist who they would put on the line in the nickel. He was very dangerous there. If he can't play, it does hurt their defense. They are deep at LB and can cover there, but they do lose their best pass rusher. Which should help.

As athletic as their LB's are, they are still not corners. I think the best way to attack them is to spread them out with multiple WR's. Make them work in space. This strategy doesn't work unless you have to O-line to keep their DL off the QB. That's why a lot of teams have failed trying to spread their D. Our line has proven to be excellent in pass protection so this is a big plus.

Their pass defense is the weak sister of the D. Still better than most, but the best place to attack them. They have given up big numbers through the air on a few occassions.

As I alluded to earlier, our best bet is a shoot-out, but what's new. That's been our MO all season.

I despise Ohio St., but they have a good team. There's a reason these two teams are being matched up. We can beat them. But they can beat us. I like that Charlie has a month to prepare.

Thanks, Scoop, for the input. I watched parts of the PSU-OSU game and the
UM-OSU game. OSU obviously improved during the 2nd half of the season.

ND-OSU? A toss-up in my opinion.

I've seen Ohio State several times this year. The defense is as good as I've seen.

Offensively, they are conservative at times. It cost them against Texas. The last drive against Michigan was awesome. Troy Smith is a good football player, a gutsy leader that the team follows. If he had been the guy against Texas, they might have won that game.

But he can turn it over. This offense isn't nearly as scary as some of the ones ND has faced already. But their receivers are fast. Santonio Holmes might be the best athlete on that team. I find Ginn to be overrated, but underutilized. He is a threat on special teams.

Notre Dame would probably be installed as a favorite, but it will be a full 60 minute fight. I worry about Ohio State more than any other possible opponents.

I think early in the year, the OSU staff read too much into the hype around Ginn. They tried way too much to base their offense on getting him the ball, usually through gimmick plays and WR screens. This failed. If he's such a good WR, why not just run his routes and throw to him? We found out why not. The man has a serious case of the dropsies. It was after they committed to running Pittman and using Holmes and Gonzales as their downfield threats that their offense picked up.

Ginn is an incredible athlete, but I think he'd be better suited on defense.

All you have to do with Ginn is punish him on one of those short routes and that will throw him off. From what I've seen, his concentration isn't that good to start with. You throw in a couple of good licks on him and he's gets progressively worse. Against the meat of their schedule (PSU and Texas) he did nothing. He basically crawled up into a shell against Texas (dropped balls). When they started playing the lesser teams, he got it going. Holmes is the main threat for OSU at wide receiver. He is the more polished of the three. Troy Smith is a great leader for OSU and has played well since Tressel decided to stick with him. He is susceptible to turnovers though. Pittman came on towards the middle of the season for OSU. He's a good back with some speed to boot. The OSU defense.......scary. They say that Darius rarely takes a direct hit. If they're going to run draws up the middle, he's going to take quite a few. AJ Hawk is ferocious. That's just a brief synopsis of what I've seen from them. I feel that Tressel is too conservative at times. I would love to see what these guys could do in an offense like CW's. Not against us though.

The Buckeye D is what worries me most.

They are second in America against the run. By stuffing the run, they are able to blitz against the passing game and cause problems.

Ginn is most dangerous on punt returns. I really thought he was going to be a lockdown corner in college. As a receiver, his speed is a threat but as a route runner he leaves some to be desired.

He leaves alot to be desired and even more so when it comes to catching the ball. They should have just played him at corner and let him return kickoffs and punt returns. He may be another Chris Gamble. Gamble had better hands though.

AJ Hawk is a hell of a linebacker and their total D is fierce, but Weis can game plan for anyone and he'll have success against their defense.

so maybe a good analysis of a notre dame/ohio state match up is...we are going to have to play our best game to date on defense and the offense is going to have to move the ball rushing?
hmm...I'm glad weis has a month to prepare for this and hopefully this will be a better game then the usc one...with a victory of course :)
