So I came across this yesterday, and it didn't exactly give me warm fuzzies. Thought I should pass it along, though:
Yikes. If we can't even stop OUR linebackers from blitzing, how the heck are we gonna stop PSU? That last line is pretty funny, though ...
On the Ben Ford Practice-ometer (patent pending), today's workout at the Loftus Center was about a 9 on a scale of 10 in terms of interesting things to see. The highlight was watching the Irish offense work on blitz pick-up, which didn't go too well for much of the time we were permitted to watch.
The starting Irish offensive line participated, with walk-on Justin Gillett standing in at quarterback while the rest of the QBs worked with Ron Powlus on another part of the field. Running backs Travis Thomas and Junior Jabbie took reps in the backfield and tight ends John Carlson and Mike Talerico were also in on offense. The defense was a scout team-style group being told which blitz to run against the offense. They weren't asked to hold back — Charlie Weis shouted, "Give me some tempo, now, defense!"
The Irish offense wasn't performing up to par as the drill began. Offensive line coach John Latina yelled, "Let me see more protection!", and after one rep, Weis just shouted, "Again! Again!" He also got angry with guard with guard Mike Turkovich, at one point yelling, "Turk! You don't do _____ except listen to Sully!" The Irish seemed to be doing better as we were escorted out of practice, but it doesn't look like this issue has been totally resolved yet. It may not have been a coincidence that Jimmy Clausen and the rest of the quarterbacks were practicing throwing on the run a few yards away.
