Offense Success

The difference in the amount of hits and sacks that Jimmy Claussen has reduced substantially since last year. A few reasons that I have seen are is Jimmy has used a lot more 3 and 5 step drops to get the ball off faster. The speed of the receivers has forced the defense to play further of the play. They are also not blitzing, no avoid Man on man coverage on the wide receivers. This has also helped the running game due to the fact they are not facing an 8 man front. Also the safeties also are playing further off the ball so the can assist the defense backs in pass coverage. This means the strong safety can't fill a whole as fast and he can't make a tackle as fast. I think if the Irish can stretch the field to gain more man on man coverage. This also makes it easier for Jimmy to read the defense and make any adjustments much quicker. I would also look for the offense to increase the number of screen passes to the backs, will also leave the tight end open over the middle for the tight end pop.

A pretty good evaluation...for a kicker:smilewink!

they finally started to click in the second half against Purdue...i hope it carries over to this week. It's almost scary to see how good this offense can become with Freshman and Sophomores leading the way right now.

The offensive staff probably dictated the play. Jimmy and co. executed.

I am telling you, I saw this team come out from the START ready to play football. I think their confidence snowballed every single down.

Trust me. I know what I am talking about. I actually participated in the "gameday thread". I stated early and often in the first half that this team was playing like I had not seen in years.

I hope they can keep it going.

I vaguely remember (because I got so plastered) thinking that the secondary coverage was flat out the best I had ever seen. I was a bit toasted by then, and ecstatic, but the secondary "sold out" for ND last week.

Thanks for the insight.

While the offense coordinator calls the plays, In practice the will try to get Jimmy to throw to the running back screen, so later in the game it will make the deep pass open because the other team is looking for the screen. Also while the tight end pop over the middle may not be the most glamorous play, It's forcing miss matches like a tight end on a linebacker. That is an advantage for the offense. The reason why some cocker's script plays is to show the defense certain formations that the defense gets used to, Then the QB can make the screen that the safety will bite on an lead to man coverage deep. I can almost bet that because the Irish use a lot of play action runs and passes, Jimmy will score easily on a naked boot normally used in goaline offense. The offense has done a great job of showing repeat formations, that will lead to a big play later in the game.

LOL Linebacker is the one that is SUPPOSED to cover the TE.

Not sure what you mean here, but I get the vibe.

This team is a year older.

I meant coaches script plays. To be more specific, the faster outside linebacker will cover the flats, or the running back rolling out for a screen. This will leave the tightend and receivers with man coverage. The tightend will be covered by the mike or middle linebacker. The first play the run, then the pass which does give a tightend an advantage. I didn't kick all practice, I learned the offense with the help of my roommate Jamie Spencer. Some kickers actually love the game. I was also required to submit fake punts and kicks each week and come up with tell signs where the other team may try a fake against us. I did this mainly my junior and senior years due to the fact I could not play.
I am able to tell where the other team is going to kickoff the ball to. It will always be revealed by the angle of his steps and the direction the laces of the football point. I wish coaches would use this info. As they always say special teams is 1/3 of the game. Notre Dame does not have a coach that only does special teams, but more big plays, turnovers, and the field position depend on it. You can devote I coach to that area in my opinion. I bet at least 3 games will be won or lost due to special teams this year. VT doesn't call it Beamer Ball for nothing.

Line Kumara up at TE,let him drag linebackers out of run lanes plus create coverage matchups which we can exploit.I believe stanford will try to blitz early so lets mix em' up and then start running the ball using misdirection.

I lost my cheat sheet so I cant speak intelligently on our formations, and I cant remember whose post suggested using Kamara at TE but I think it's a good idea especially since we have no TE this weekend.

I think Mr. Rudolph will have something to say about that.

Spreading out Tate and Floyd is alread a threat with the athleticism they've already showed this year, they both can catch the deep pass. Rudolph does a great job going over the middle and blocking. Grimes just gets open when he knows he has to. Passing, ND does not have a problem. Runing the ball...we need to pound it or dive in like Weis wants us to.
