ND Depth Chart

Rivals new Irish Illustrated.com has Ambrose Wooden as the other starting corner.

There are freshmen as second stringers all over the offense and defense. ND's two backup offensive tackles...you guessed it. Paul Duncan and Michael Turkovich. Bruton and McCarthy are the backup safeties.

Is there any validity to this depth chart? Can someone present another version from another resource?

Okay, here are the totals: 12 Freshmen, 7 of those true freshmen. D.J. Hord is the third WR in one spot. Schwapp is the backup fullback. Both safety backups are true freshmen.

I'm guessing this has to be pretty solid.

you're probably right. there's only so many bodies and holes need to be filled.

but judging from the size of schwapp, he shouldn't have a problem being physical. inexperience will be the real test.

I like the talent of the first string, but depth and experience are sorely lacking here. They're going to need some guys to come of age very quick if anyone is seriously hurt and has to miss time.

Turkovich and Duncan as the backup tackles really concern me. Are either of these guys physically ready to step in should their number be called? Conventional football wisdom tells me no.

I hate to bash the last regime, but they have really left this program in sorry shape. The offensive line is in complete shambles. Two true freshmen as backup tackles, the starting guard is the backup center and Dan Santucci seems to be the only backup guard.

They have to keep Quinn healthy. If anyone doubts why Weis wanted both Frazer and Jones in this recruiting class, look no further than who is behind Quinn.

This depth chart has taken my optimism down a full notch, especially the offensive line. O-line is in far worse shape than the secondary.

Mattes, Raridon, and Santucci are backups as well.. Mattes, and Raridon have some playing experience (though not much)

I think Rivals might just be taking a wild ass guess at this point. I can't see Weis being forthcoming with that info. There are deeper teams out there for sure. But none will be better prepared.

The Pitt game issue of Blue & Gold shows a 2 deep and notes that its "Tentative". Weis is keeping it close to the vest.

I only see 3 true freshman as backups, SS McCarthey, FS Bruton, RT Duncan.

Regardless of the depth chart I'd expect Santucci to be the backup at both guards. If Sullian goes down Morton to center, Santucci to Guard. Santucci has "almost" 83 minutes of PT, 6th most on the team. I'd also expect Mattes to the first replacement at either tackle. BGI lists Duncan at RT but does CW put Quinn (and the season) at risk in a freshman's hands? I think not (and I know nothing about Duncan other than he's a big freshman and like freshman when's there's an audible they don't react they think what the hell am I supposed to do now.). And unless Thomas shows definite #2 ability, I'd expect a lot a Power-Neal in one back sets to replace Walker until stability is shown.

BGI Tentative ND lineup for Pitt game
D
LCB - Richardson/Lambert
RCB - Wooden/Ferrine.
FS - Ndukwe/Bruton
SS - Zib/McCarthey
ALB - Crum/Vernaglia
MLB - Mays/Thomas
WLB - Hoyte/Brockington
LE - Abiamiri/Talley
LT - Laws/Stevenson
RT - Landri/Beidatsch
RE - Frome/Brown

O
WR - McKnight/Shelton
WR - Stovall/Samardzija
TE - Fasano/Carlson
LT - Harris/Mattes
LG - Morton/Santucci
C - Sullivan/Morton
RG - Stevenson/Santucci
RT - LeVoir/Duncan
QB - Quinn/Wolke
FB - Powers-Neal/McConnell
TB - Walker/Thomas

I'm really kinda suprised Lambert isn't starting. Of the 3 guys fighting for that corner spot, Wooden was actually the one I thought least likely to get it...

Someone's really gotta tell me why Richardson is starting. I mean, I know he's got the most experience, but really....

This one is different than Irish Illustrated. No Turkovich.

I know who Santucci is.

I've never heard of the other two names in my life.

Anyone know whats up with Lambert? I would have thought he would have been a starter at this point soemwhere on his athletic ability alone....

Doesn't look to bad. I really hope Ndukwe is the starting FS, I hear such great things about him. He's supposed to be a really hard hitter. Ferrine has been really impressive in practice as well.

The starters on the O Line look great, all have NFL potential. I think Duncan may be good enough to play as a Frosh, much like Harris was.

Players to watch on D this year, Ndukwe(this guy is gonna open some eyes), and Lambert. I think Wooden is better suited at WR, but were pretty stacked there this year. He could always make the move to WR next year if it doesn't work out at corner.

Under the last regime, Wooden was known as a speedy athlete that appeared to distain contact. Apparently under Weis, Minter, and Lewis that's changed.

As for Lambert, I recall his high school press clippings but don't recall he's distinguished himself in Div 1. The first step is beating out Richardson.

It's been 8 years since Ivory Covington played corner. Fans lamented then, "Why does Holtz play him?" Simple, for 4 years nobody beat him out.

Richardson has the most experience and until somebody beats him out expect him to play there. Weis will play his best 11, not necessarily the best athlete, but the best team of 11.

Ferrine is in the mix but lost practice time to injury. Jabbi was making some noise but requested a position change to RB. I haven't heard anything about Hedgemon from news reports. New scholarship owner Brandon Harris has speed but I suspect he's lower on the knowledge curve as the others have been CBs for a longer period of time.

IF ND opened the season against Navy and Washington, the less experienced guys could learn on the job. But Palko and Henne aren't conducive to on-the-job training.
