While I love the fact ND has their lucrative TV deal with NBC, I think it's time NBC started to upgrade their telecasts of ND football.

First, get a new theme or music, I've been listening to that same lame musical beat for like 12 years now.

Second, get rid of Hayden and Hammond. They are awful announcers. I don't put to much stock into announcers but these guys are just awful to listen too. But Hammond has to go, that guy doesn't know anything about football. Spice it up a little put the rocket on as a sideline reporter, or Taylor in the booth, who does a good job on ABC's half time reports. Derrick Mays does a good job, seen him on ESPN. Guess what i'm getting at is, get some ND guys in the booth.

get new announcers, can't stress that enough.

i agree, since Notre Dame has upgraded their football program, the least that nbc could do is upgrade theirs.

Home games are way too long. I'd also like to nominate noon starts as opposed to 1, 2 or 3 PM.

Theisman would be awesome...but I doubt ESPN/ABC would give him up. Who are some former coaches or players that are good on the microphone? What about Holtz? It would be cool to hear Lou on the broadcast every week...either on the announce team, or during the pre-game & at halftime as an analyst.

Yeah I would enjoy listening to Holtz as a comentator during the games. I thought he did good in the year he was in limbo after leaving ND and going to South Carolina.

Is it just me, but every time I go to the MSNBC Notre Dame Central alot of the articles are Anti-ND? And if NBC should be promoting ND anyway they can, why would they allow these posts on the site? I know for every Anti-ND article written there is a Pro-ND article written, so why not post those on the site?

Irish Remain College Football's Top Draw On Television

Six Notre Dame games among 25 highest-rated network contests in 2004.

Jan. 5, 2005

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The University of Notre Dame football team in 2004 once again received more network television exposure and played in more highly-rated games than any other program in college football.

Notre Dame played in the highest-rated network game of the 2004 regular season (and the highest rated regular-season game overall in two seasons) in its '04 regular-season finale at USC. That game, televised by ABC Sports, received a 6.3 Nielsen rating and was seen in 6.898 million households, making it the most-watched nationally broadcast regular-season college football game on network television in '04, according to figures in the Dec.27, 2004-Jan. 2, 2005 issue of Street & Smith's SportsBusiness Journal.

Overall, Notre Dame played in six games that ranked among the top 25 highest-rated network telecasts - and no other school played in more than five (Tennessee and Georgia each played in five). Here are the other five games involving Notre Dame:

• Notre Dame's victory over Michigan on Sept. 11 on NBC Sports ranked ninth with a 4.0 Nielsen rating (4.384 million households).

• Notre Dame's victory at Tennessee on Nov. 6 on CBS Sports earned a 3.4 (3.75 million) and ranked 11th.

• The Oct. 2 Notre Dame-Purdue game on NBC received a 2.5 rating (2.719 million) and ranked 22nd.

• The Nov. 13 Notre Dame-Pittsburgh game on NBC received a 2.4 (2.578 million) and ranked 24th.

• Notre Dame's Sept. 25 victory over Washington on NBC earned a 2.3 (2.518 million) and ranked 25th.

Meanwhile, Notre Dame played twice during the '04 regular season on ESPN -- and both those telecasts rated among the top 14 most-watched regular-season college football games on cable television this past year.

The Sept. 18 Notre Dame victory at Michigan State in prime time on ESPN earned a 2.6 coverage area rating (2.326 million households) and ranked ninth among games on cable. The Irish season opener Sept. 4 at BYU received a 2.5 rating (2.197 million) and ranked 14th.

Once again in 2004, Notre Dame was the only school in the country to have all 11 of its regular-season games carried by either NBC (six), CBS (two), ABC (one) or ESPN (two).

Including the Insight Bowl carried on ESPN, Notre Dame now has a remarkable streak of 148 consecutive games (more than 12 full seasons) that have been carried by either NBC (80), ABC (42), CBS (14) or ESPN (12). You have to go all the way back to the 1992 season to find a Notre Dame football games that was not shown by either NBC, ABC, CBS or ESPN.

How about Alan Pinkett and Paul Hornung? Both announcers, both former running backs, both loyal alumni, and I even think they both live near South Bend. I'm only half-kidding because I think people exaggerated what Hornung said, and it would have been hilarious if Pinkett had responded to that.

Rod Smith is also an ESPN radio guy, I believe. And there could be some old standards like Beurlein or Mirer looking for a job.

One thing we have to bear in mind: The longer we're an independent, the more likely we'll stay one. College football will be forced to codify our independence at some point, if they keep pushing for things like the BCS. Thus, it would be good not to push NBC too far. Though I can only imagine how slick ND football would be if Fox had the contract...

Fox having the contract could be very exciting although I worry that they would be too quick to drop us. I doubt that Fox would have stuck with ND over the last 8 years of agony...

God, I hope Fox never gets that contract. One 6-5 season and they'd drop us and replace us w/ a reality show about wife-swapping or something....trash network....

The thing with NBC is that they have to treat ND well. What else do they have in their sports department? Golf & The Olympics. Fox has the NFL (NFC), NASCAR, MLB...they would drop ND in a heartbeat if the team struggled or the broadcasts were unprofitable. But if we're talking top-notch Pro-Irish (or at least impartial) broadcast teams, why not go for broke?

Play-By-Play Announcer: Bob Costas. He's not a "football guy", but he's one of the top 3 announcers today.
Color Commentator: Jerome Bettis...hey, if the Steelers win the Super Bowl & he retires it could happen...lol. But I'd settle for Alan Pinkett.
Sideline Commentator: "The Rocket" or Ricky Watters...couldn't be any worse than Eric Dickerson on MNF.
Pre-Game/Halftime/Post-Game Analyst: Lou Holtz...'nuff said.

That's a dream announce team right there.

Isn't Costas the host of HBO's Inside the NFL?

Yeah, great show...but I was talking about Costas doing the actual play-by-play of a game. I know he's done baseball, basketball, & olympic sports...but I've never heard him do a football game before.

True...but as good as he is, he'd be much better than what we have now.

I'm pushing for a Costas-Bettis broadcast team in '05. Hey, if irish can push Brady for the Heisman next season, I should be able to dream about an all-star broadcast team...lol.

I see you're out there in Cali. Ouch. I've got a place in ChiTown where they open at ten for football during the season. One hour before the 11AM games start. Awesome.

Yeah, but a lot of the Heisman race is run the year before. Unless they get injured, I think Reggie Bush, Adrian Peterson, and "The Other" Vince Young have to be considered the favorites for next year. I think we have a better chance of signing Bob Costas (if he'd be interested in the job), than Brady winning the Heisman next season.

Even when ND is bad their ratiings are still on top. Plus advertisers love ND's viewers, I read somewhere alot of upper middle class people watch ND's games which sponsors love. ND and USC was the highest rated game this year. Michigan-ND and Tennesse-ND were also one of the top rated games.

So there really isn't any reason for NBC to drop ND, ratings are right there with ABC, and CBS. Fox has been trying for a long time to lure ND. But ND has remained faithful to NBC.Fox wouldn't drop ND after a 6-5 season like some of you are saying, because ND would still have those high rated games with Mich, Tenn, USC , FSU, etc. a game like ND-Stanford, they'd probably put on one of the affiliates (FX). That is why ND hasn't signed with Fox, ND wants all there games on national TV, while Fox would put only the big games on national tv and the smaller ones on there cable networks. Rumor has it Fox out bid NBC for ND games, but ND remained faithful to NBC.

Really do need some new blood in the booth, agree they need to be ND homers. Lou, Joe, Ara rotating through the booth with whatever play-by-play guy the land. Some former players on the side lines.

With ND being the top draw on TV, its a shame that NBC has not made some changes.
