Myspace: a parents nightmare?

Megan Meier, 13 yrs old, committed suicide after cyber-bullying from an adult pretending to be a 16 yr old boy.
I'm not allowing myspace in the house, as it appears very little good can come from it, but alot of negatives. Keep in mind, this comes from a parent's perspective, not from a teenager or twenty-something.

Parents just cannot allow their pre-teens and young teens disappear into their rooms with a computer. You don't leave your kid at home alone and then leave the front door to your house wide open and allow anyone to walk in, same thing. MySpace and Facebook can be blocked so there really isn't any excuse. I think the problem is that most parents don't even know what those places are all about. One day its email and then instant messaging and now that is even old school. Its hard to keep up with it all. My son thinks email is for dinosaurs and I am not sure he even knows where a post office is here.

I completely agree with you. Parents need to take a more active role in their childs life. A high school here in Chattanooga is about to fall under state control because the graduation rate is 28%. The school system asked the parents what could help their children succeed in graduating and the number one response was....start school later in the day. Out of all the problems in that school the parts thing the start time of the school is the biggest proble. The school starts at 7:15 am and is now starting at 8:00am.

As a northerner that moved to Middle TN about 4 years ago, I can safely say that I am not shocked. Needless to say, my wife and I will be gone before we have kids. There is no way on God's green earth I am raising children in the south.

How do u bully someone on the computer? I'm not cold or heartless but you gotta raise your kid better than that. Who isn't depressed? I went through everything possible before I even turned 10 and I didn't kill myself. I sound heartless, but I'm not kids today are soft. A cyber bully? I don't get how that's possible and myspace is fine. You can make your profiles private where no outsiders you don't want in can look at it....just the people u allow to be your friends. I remember at 13 i was real immature but I sure could handle the internet. Get your kids outside.....I always was. I'm almost 21 and myspace just got bad because of all the little kids/advertising/music and every possible thing you could shove into a website ruined it. So there was facebook which is now selling out allowing little ass kids get on and making it more like myspace. Kids can't handle technology or something....Hanging yourself over an internet friend isn't anybodies fault. I'm not kidding probably like 75% of my class has ADD and most are depressed so it isn't an excuse it's called life and it sucks. She hung herself? Well wheres the parents? At 13 you should be able to handle myspace.

The article went on to say that the father was in her room 20 minutes earlier comforting her. As a parent, you ca;t be with your children 24/7 it's just not possible. He walked away for 20 minutes to give her some time alone and she hung herself.

I agree kids are more sensitive today. But it may have been bi-polar and ADD. Those kids are uber-sensitive and have a hard time controlling anger/emotion. Who knows.

Well not every one is a mental giant like you. People deal with stress, life or what ever you want to call it in different ways, unfortunately she dealt with her problems with suicide. Parent should pay more attention to their child and by paying more attention to their child they might be able to prevent incedents like this. I do agree with one thing that you said, kids should spend more time outside.

Well not every one is a mental giant like you. People deal with stress, life or what ever you want to call it in different ways, unfortunately she dealt with her problems with suicide.
