So the SB Tribune had an article about the QB position:
South Bend Tribune: Notre Dame football: Crist's injury opens QB quandary

Here are my thoughts about the position w/ QB's that ND wil have for the next 2 years:

Jimmy Clausen- I think Clausen stays at ND for his senior year. The talk has been that he may go into the NFL draft after his junior season, as I have reinterated in other posts, if Clausen ends this season on a high note this will be his only good season at ND to remember. Other QB's such as Tebow, McCoy, and Bradford have had more than 1 good season. Yes, we know that Clausen wants to go to the NFL, but lets be realistic everyone wants to go to the NFL. I think in the back of Clausen's mind he knows that if he messes up Weis would pull him out and put Crist in and we all know that Crist has the potential to take the position over. Now that Crist will be out 4-6 months Clausen knows that the position is his. Plus Clausen has his turf tough and he will not be fully healthy until next September.

Evan Sharpley- He has done well as a backup QB and hopefully we won't have to see him this year unless if we have a huge lead.

Dayne Crist- If he is willing to do so, redshirt him for another year of eligiblity. This is Jordan Shipley's (of Texas) 6th year and the past 2 years he has been a dynamic player. I think Weis needs to be cautious of Crist.

Andrew Hendrix/Tommy Rees- Do not redshirt either for next year. With Jimmy staying for his sr. year he will take 90% plus of the snaps, but ND needs to have a backup available.

I hate to see Crist get this injury or anyone get an injury, however if Clausen does go for the NFL some might take it as a screw you to ND, but if he stays I think he gains respect from a lot of the alum that took him as a snotty punk coming in.

We simply can't offer him another redshirt. He's already sat out his first year. Thus, his one additional year of eligibility has been used. In order to get him a Sixth year, Dayne will have to petition the NCAA on the grounds of medical hardship. If it isn't granted, then he will only have another three years left once this season is done.

In addition to that, I thought the rule was medical redshirts are only eligible if the injury occurs in the first 4 games of the season. I am not 100% on that but I remember hearing some discussion when Bradford went down that he would be eligible at the time. However, since he came back that option would not be available.

Huh?

I'm pretty sure Jimmy knows the position is his. You really think he's looking over his shoulder?

despite the bad luck, Dayne will get plenty of time to study the playbook.

I don't think Hendrix or Rees are ever going to see the field, unless they are clocking it for Dane in a couple years. They will probably be leapfrogged by a highly touted recruit that Charlie will land after Dane is gone.

LOL@ Jimmy staying now because he doesn't have to worry about Dayne taking his spot with his knee injury.

I think this is 100% wrong.

Irishandy, no offense, but there are a few things in that post that are just soooo wrong, as many have already pointed out.

1. Jimmy has known it was fully his job since the beginning of LAST year. Not once has he even been threatened by CW to being pulled from a game, much less being removed as the starter. And do you seriously think, with 18 TDs and 2 INTs, that Jimmy doesn't already know the job is safely his? Do you seriously think he has been looking over his shoulder this whole year? C'mon man.

2. You can't just redshirt people on a whim. Crist is not eligible for a redshirt this season. He's done.

3. You cannot, ahead of them being on campus already, just say that Weis should not redshirt either of the incoming freshmen QBs. We haven't even seen them yet, and you want Weis to NOT redshirt them? That makes no sense. What if one of them is simply not ready? You want him to take meaningless snaps in the 4th quarter of a blowout, thus losing an entire season of eligibility??? If Jimmy were to come back, as you say, and Crist were unavailable, then you have one be the backup and the other redshirt. Besides that, Crist will be back on time for August ball...

NDinLA is far too polite IrishAndy. Jimmy looking over his shoulder, are you on crack? Projected at #8 in the draft and yet looking back at Dayne on the sideline and worrying? Yes he is worrying, just about his friend's injury and future.

if jimmy goes and dayne is not ready to play. Looks like Goodman will be the guy.

It might not be that bad, remember when oklahoma had to use one of their wrs (Paul Thompson) as QB a couple years back? they had a pretty decent year. I think they were 10-2 or something. They won the big 12 and went to the fiesta lost in overtime.

Hopefully Dayne is good to go, because even if Jimmy doesnt come back this team has a chance to be really good next year.

The statement about Weis pulling Clausen for Crist if Jimmy "messes up" is the most ludicrous thing Ive heard.

Crist threw more bad passes in that quarter against WSU than Clausen has thrown this YEAR.

Agreed,

I'm fairly certain that with his growing QB track record that Weis will probably reel in a top 5 QB recruit in the 2011 class.

QB's tend to transfer out if they don't win a starting job by year 3. So chances are good that Hendrix or Rees will be gone by the time Dayne graduates.

Hey... Hendrix is a 4 star kid for a reason. He's good. He plays in a Pro-Style attack. Guys... I doubt that in 3/4 years, after which both Hendrix and Rees will have undergone collegiate weight training and coaching, that a Freshman will come in day one and have the job offered to him and beat out the aforementioned two QBs.

Yeah Crist threw a ton of bad passes. But I am positive Jimmy would not be able to make that TD pass Dane threw. That was about as perfect a pass you can make.

The guy has a ton of potential.

I can't believe this thread. Anyone that thinks Jimmy would ever get pulled for Crist is an idiot. Crist will be our QB next year because Jimmy would be a moron not to go pro this year, especially since it is the last year he can rake in all the cash, not because he has any fear of losing his job. What a joke!

ps. Jimmy can and has thrown the perfect TD pass on numerous occassions. Are you Dayne's little brother or something.

He took three steps backward and handed McFadden and Jones the football. He's like a tee... but worse.

LMAO @ people already throwing Jimmy under the bus, by pretending that Crist could take his starting job. These are the same people who, after Clausen comes back and leads ND to a BCS bowl victory and Top 5 finish next year, will swear that ND will win the NC, the next year, because the offense will not drop off at all under Crist. I'm no psychologist, but I do believe that one could term this as Delusional Thinking.

10-4. Delusional thinking. Affirmatiive. Clausen will be king until he moves on. Everyone else will be second best...

Jimmy Clausen has made about a dozen throws this year that Dayne Crist won't be able to make in his entire career.

Sooooo, in summary:

* Clausen is a stud, and he's not looking over his shoulder now, nor has he ever been looking over his shoulder worrying about Crist taking over his job.

* Crist is a stud, and will not be able to redshirt. He also is not better than JC right now.

* You should redshirt at least one of the freshman QBs next year.

Sound about right? Since the original poster has not come back to defend his ridiculous statements, and we're all pretty much in a agreement, this thread is done...
