Think of it this way...with a little clock management and coaching that was just a tad better, JJ's win loss record is a lot better.

Jones told Mike Frank that he and Sergio Brown took in practice together this past weekend. Jones stood by Weis and Vaas the entire time, answering and asking questions as the offense ran through practice.

Robert Hughes was supposed to go with them, but I haven't seen an article with his feedback yet.

Jones and Brown sound like they're ready to suit up and practice now.

I think a lot of Irish fans discount Jones’s ability to throw the football. I’ve watched a lot of “athletic” quarterbacks in my time covering recruiting and Jones can throw the football with the best of them. In my eye, Jones is much more polished throwing the football than Vince Young was at the same stage, and likely why Weis wanted Jones.
Lately, I've been very impressed with the content of Irish Eyes and Scout.com. Mike Frank does really good work with his analysis of recruits and their film.
I posted this portion of an article he posted today. You may or may not recall how touted Vince Young was coming out of high school. Myself, Big Don and a few others have believed for some time Jones will end up being the man at ND. With some polish and bulking up, Jones will be the starting QB the next time ND wins a National Championship.

I disagree...Jarious had a very low interception ratio to TDs since he liked to throw the ball at the receiver's feet for the most part. He was NOT a very good passer. I suspected he needed corrective lenses since I saw this as a common pattern throughout the season as he played.

I disagree because yes, they are and the same can be said of Jimmy Clausen. He's got half the galaxy attached to his nuts.

Too bad Jarious was a good passer in a running system. It doesn't need to be said but Davie didn't do anything as far as the passing game of his teams. Look at Givens then and now. Sitting in the stands we always complained about the fact that Givens might have been the best player on the field, but was never given the ball. Why? B/c Davie didn't know how to coach the passing game.

He believed in Confusing Them With Shittiness. Call Dive plays so many times that when the other team thinks you will not call it again, because it is such a dumb call, you actually catch them by surprise and get 5 yards instead of 2.

JJ was also the last QB from ND to cause a blip on the NFL radar. The guy managed to hang around and even start a game or two.

Meh...JJ was a capable quarterback. He wasn't memorable, though. IMO, Mirer, McDougal and Paulus are the only 'memorable' Irish qb's since '88.

JJ ended up in the NFL, which is more than can be said for Powlus and McDougal. Their Notre Dame Legacies might be more, but Jackson took the next step. Which is my point. The last guy to really do anything at QB in the next level was Jarious Jackson. And I agree with Coach Chmiel. If Jackson had played under Holtz, things could have been different for him in regards to his career at Notre Dame.

yeah, i don't disagree with you on that point, jiggs. i'm just not much of a pro football fan - the college game means a lot more to me. so you're right, JJ was able to extend his career into the nfl game for a while, but my definition of 'greats' tends to be limited to the college perspective.

Here's an outsider's take on the situation.

You have to look at track record. Weis has never had a running-style QB in his career. Cutcliffe worked with the Mannings, none of whom were known for their scambling abilities. Last year, it looked like Quinn was being told not to scramble. With all of this in mind, it looks pretty clear to me that these coaches are old school (aka they're not Mack Brown). Unless this Jones kid develops an arm, I don't think he's going to play in front of Clausen (if he comes). Also, is it true that Jones is 6-3, 190? That's pretty weak. Keep in mind that Vince Young is a big guy who could absorb hits.

Arm is a-okay and Clausen is roughly the same size as you've mentioned.

Weis has told him he wants him to pass first. If your theory is correct, the Zach Frazer Era is set to begin.

Jiggs, I am not tryng to be a smartass but I believe Powlus did make ti to the NFL. Memory says he was a backup for somebody, maybe the Eagles. If I can't remember he obviously didn't do anything worthwhile.

He did, but he never made a roster coming out of camp. I don't think he ever took a snap in an NFL game.

Mirer and Jackson were the last ND QB to make a roster and be on the 3-deep QB depth charts of an NFL team. Mirer was by far more accomplished.

Quinn will put the ND QB spot back on the radar quickly.
