It has hit the papers...

LEXINGTON - Fort Campbell standout Micah Johnson has officially decided to join his brother, Christian, at the University of Kentucky.

Johnson was calling other coaches who had recruited him Monday to tell them he was going to Kentucky. He also told several recruits that were at the Kentucky-Tennessee game Saturday that he was set to join the Wildcats.

His mother, Vicki, confirmed Monday night that he had made his final decision and picked UK over Notre Dame, Georgia and Virginia Tech.

"His heart has been set on Kentucky," Vicki Johnson said. "He's always accepted a challenge and having a chance to play with his brother is also important to him."

Christian Johnson played as a true freshmen in Kentucky's offensive line this season after playing last year at Hargrave Military Academy. The two brothers played high school football together for two years in Virginia.

"Micah is kind of weird. Some people get nervous in competition, but competition drives him to being the best," Christian Johnson said earlier this season. "The things he needs to work on are mainly simple stuff that the coaches could knock out in no time. But I think he's going to be an exceptional college player.

"I am hoping to get him here. I just want to tell him, 'Micah, get up here. I need you up here.' And when it comes time to make his choice, I think this is where he'll be."

Cats land big one in Micah Johnson

The Kentucky football team didn't get a landmark win over Tennessee last weekend, but that didn't stop the Wildcats from picking up a landmark recruit days later.

Fort Campbell star Micah Johnson orally committed to play for UK yesterday, according to his mother, Vicki.

Johnson is the highest-profile recruit of the Rich Brooks era and would rival Tim Couch and Dennis Johnson as the most significant Wildcat recruits of the past two decades. A 6-foot-2, 267-pounder who can play middle linebacker, defensive end and fullback, Johnson is a consensus Top 50 player nationally. Rivals.com lists him as the nation's No. 2 defensive end and 43rd-best player overall.

He selected Kentucky over Georgia, Virginia Tech and Notre Dame.

Johnson's brother, Christian, is a freshman offensive lineman at UK. The Johnson family was at Commonwealth Stadium for the Wildcats' 27-8 season-ending loss to Tennessee, and Johnson's mother said her son had his mind made up then.

"Micah knew where his heart was," the player's mother said. "He's had a lot of people tell him, 'Don't go to Kentucky; they're losing. You should be at a USC or a Miami.' But Micah has always accepted a challenge, and he wants to be a part of building something special at Kentucky."

With the commitment of Augusta (Ga.) defensive back Chris Drayton last week, Kentucky now has 18 commitments for its 2006 recruiting class.

That was a mini-Jason Kates situation there.

Mini and Kates? No, that's not right.

Come on Jason, just go Irish!! Everyone's doing it.

i don't understand why any top player would go to kentucky, they've been nothing but a bottom feeder in the SEC since forever.

His brother goes there, he lives there and he went with his gut. ND came in late. Gotta remember, South Bend ain't for everyone.

Okay, let's talk recruiting. All this duck duck goose has made me nuts today.

Micah is UK. Toryan announces Monday. I think he's Irish, but if he goes Tide, a few scenarios....

Anthony Lewis and ND have appeared to have parted ways. If Smith goes Tide, this might open things up for a couple of Chicago area kids...

Oshon Tongo of Naperville North is an equal to Toryan Smith. Kevin Green of North Chicago also plays fullback and might be a slight upgrade to Tongo and Smith, but not as good as Richardson.

Green and Tongo don't have offers. If ND offers Tongo, I think he jumps at the chance and goes Irish. Green has BC, Purdue and Iowa on his mind.

It might not be too late for these guys.

Just a gut feeling, but I think the ship may be full with a couple of silent commits...this may be why we are seeing players that suddenly aren't interested.

Hopefully, Reuland, Young, McCoy, Smith and Carufel let Chuck know that they are on board.

good for Micah, follow your heart. If you're good enough to play in the NFL, the NFL will find you no matter where you play. He'll start from day one at UK..

There is another post around here about it.

Lewis told scout.com ND was pretty much filled up and he took them off his list. Something to that extent. Check out that thread.

Yeah, while I would have loved to land him, I have no problem with his decision. Besides, at least he can't hurt us at Kentucky.

I think ND encouraged Toryan Smith to take visits to see what Micah would do.

Micah goes UK, Toryan is announcing Monday? I think I'm starting to believe, as Morpheus did of Neo, that Toryan is the one.

#23 is coming Monday, Domers.

Kentucky? Hah. Is he going to play power forward?

Rich Brooks will not make his entire 4 seasons. Any of his other short list teams would have been significantly better. Hell, Central Florida would have been better. That being said, in typical ND fashion, we wish him the best.
