Maust....where have you gone?

I know a lot of people were calling for Maust's head after the first few weeks of the season, but after the atrocious display of punting by Turk this past weekend (and really against USC as well), I think its time for the Irish to bring back their more veteran punter. Field position can mean EVERYTHING, especially in a close game....and since we have basically made an art out of "the close game", I truly believe that the difference between a poor punting performance and an excellent punting performance, could mean the difference between BCS bowl vs. Meineke Car Care Bowl.

I totally agree, and made a mental reminder on this site to bring up the HORRIBLE punting- but of course forgot. Really though, I have seen better punters on the high school level where I live than what is being displayed at ND this year. Sure-the pressure is a bit different-but come on, 30 some yard punts-when you have LOTS of field to work with? Not only are they 30 yd punts-but they are line drives with big return potential. I think ND has been very fortunate that they have not got burned on these TOO bad up to this point. But yea I agree, Turk has lost his position, give it back to Maust and see what he can do...

It seems like the weird punt formation they are using now isn't helping. Did they use the same one last year?

Not helping what? It's not designed to increase distance on punts. It's designed to make sure the punt doesn't get blocked.

I hate seeing that formation, but so many teams are using it, or something similar, now, that I just have resigned myself to the fact that it is here to stay.

hmmmm I feel like weve had this same discussion before ;)

Me and neutered domer bitched about the weird formation because from the punters view it must look like a train wreck happening 3 yards in front of you. it also looked like the blockers were pushed back and the punter comes forward and he is cramped.

I dont know if this is true or not but it seems like punts have been terrible this year.

We had this discussion on another thread a little while back. Earlier in the season I noticed the upbacks getting shoved back into the punter and thus "encouraging" higher and shorter kicks.. It seems to me (when I'm not staring at lovely boobies during the game) that the upback problem has been solved since the new punter came in, but the new guy is not doing so well, with better protection. Put the other guy back in.

We need a Quigley ...................my 2 cents..... that guys was great...........And I DONT care what you say Junkhead that kid is on his game. He left us with shitty field position at the start of practically every pocession.......40yds + AVG before the ND game.

Keep the Faith !!!

Yeah I am quite sad that we gave Turk a scholarship actually, at least based on his performance so far. If we burn a scholarship on a punter, I expect him to be able to punt it at least 45 yards and have the accuracy to pin people inside the ten. I get excited now when the ball hits the ground because then it has the chance to roll. Just like last year with Walker, we need to have a punter competition this week

I'm hoping it was based on the weather or lack of confidence after he shanked the free kick as opposed to him not having the leg. Too bad Hunter Smith didnt have a younger brother who could punt like he could.

We so0o0o already had this conversation. Errrr... I read this conversation and answer. Something about "Everybody is using it..."

I'd like to use my first lifeline. I'd like to phone (request) a friend.

*Looks on hoping someone has his back...?

I must not have been here on the forums the last time a thread like this was open. I was impressed by the BC kid thats all.

Sorry for the rekindle on the Dumpster fire. I'll call the State Fire Marshalls Office for an investigator. Situation under control, Cancel the rest of the reponse and Place all units back in service.

Respectfully,

Agree completely. Put maust back in. Turk isnt getting it done. Slow on his technique and horrible on his distance and placement. Also, the long snapping, for a kid we gave a scholarship to do just that, has also been very slow. Im actually surprised we havent had a punt blocked yet.

Just my opinion, but im sure many of you share it.

None of Turk's kicks were high but after seeing the formation a few more times I think it does cramp the kicker a bit. CW should talk to the punters to see what they have to say about it. Either way Turk's free kick traveled a Pop-Warner distance of 35 yards from point of kick to catch with no hang time. The punt game has officially moved to the top of the worst unit on the team.
