OK I am officially calling a rally to send a message to ESPN for DJ Gallo's comments about Charlie Weis. It is proof to me that as long as ND is not affiliated with ESPN, the Irish are going to suffer the bashing and unprofessional conduct such as Mr. Gallo displayed.

I sumbmitted a comment in an attempt to get this noticed - ESPN should not be allowed to have writers who influence the polls have free will to make slanderish comments.

Don't give it to Page 2. They thrive off that kind of feedback. Rather, give it to the guy that can get Gallo fired! Who do you call? The Ombudsman!

E-Mail the Ombudsman

He's the guy that tries and keeps the network on track. He gives unbiased advice to the network, such as "cut down on the tie-ins" and "You'd better follow up with the facts on that juicy piece of gossip" kind of stuff. Read his columns, they're interesting. And he's the guy that listens to feedback instead of thriving on it.

While the ombudsman's columns are by far the best content on either ESPN.com or on ESPN or its other networks, sending him a complaint doesn't do anything. It dies with him, and just gives him more possible content for his column. He's not an actual ombudsman at this point, but a columnist whose presence as a columnist at ESPN.com (intentionally, by design) gives ESPN.com readers and ESPN viewers the mistaken impression that their concerns are being taken into consideration, and their opinions heard.

That's just not the case. ESPN works on ratings, ESPN.com on traffic. If you're complaining, you're reading, or watching, and they don't care. You'll get a pat on the head, or nothing.

You want to stick it to ESPN.com? Don't go there any more, whether they write an article kissing Quinn's ass or an article calling Weis every bad name in the book. Just don't go there. You want to stick it to ESPN? Don't watch their games or their other programming, and eliminate their channels from your cable setup.

i haven't watched a sportscenter from beginning to end since it stopped being called "The Big Show" and the duo was broken up. Keith Olbermann and Dan Patrick were sportscenter. Craig Kilborn was awsome back in the day too, these guys on there today are just terrible. Except for Van Pelt, like him, everyone else, booorrriinngg.

I actually got a reply stating Gallos Credentials - He founded some funnypickel.com and wrote for the "onion"? He also was a writer for Craked Magazine - DJ is not his name it is his catchy title. So basically ESPN's next Hire will be Alfred E Newman and Flavor Flav to write its commentary.

Here is the big picture...

There is no Pro-ND OR Anti-ND bias. There IS a Pro-Money bias. Both pro-ND and anti-ND stories generate hits & viewers. Those hits and viewers generate money. The hits and viewers, in turn, generate more interest in ND which generates more hits and viewers which generates more money for....ESPN/NBC/ABC etc...

The media does this with "hot" teams every few years(USC most recently), but they never forget the cash cow...ND.

So, the ND haters are just as beneficial to ND as the ND lovers. The haters don't seem to realize the irony of it all. Their hate is the EXACT reason why ND gets so much press. And all that press is EACTLY why the haters hate them. See? And ultimately who benefits? The media and Notre Dame. Oh, the irony.

The Onion is funny- but Gallo isn't, and when the Onion added him to do sports it was the first unfunny thing they ever had in their paper. SportsPickle was the same thing, an Onion ripoff, incredibly unfunny, but it got a good rep among sports fans, because sports fans are for the most part morons. And Cracked? That's a credential now? "I wrote for Cracked"? You've got to be kidding. It's a Mad Magazine ripoff, and even Mad Magazine wouldn't be a credential to go around showing people.

The kid can't do humor, and he can't do sports. His writing is bad, to boot. What CAN he do? It must be nice to make a living with no discernible skill.

And again, those articles linked to just aren't funny or clever. The Onion method doesn't work for sports, it just comes off as incredibly lame. It misses the point of what The Onion does. They don't parody a newspaper, per se, so much as, by means of ostensibly parodying newspaper content, they send up contemporary American culture. The sports section, headed by idiot Gallo, missed this altogether; it made lame sports jokes that lame sports fans would make, in the Onion style, and think they were funny. What a competent writer would have done is mocked sports in general, and our addiction to them, and their place in our society, and the nature of the modern professional athlete. Gallo wasn't up to that. Instead we get jokes about Shaq's free throw shooting and Barry Bonds using steroids and Notre Dame's tradition. Har Har.

I think some of you are missing the point - ESPN can mold the mind of the voters - it is apparent they want troy smith to win the heisman - hell they already gave it to him. They also are step bothers to ABC who competes with NBC. It is kind of like this - do you ever see good/positive article on espn.com or on sportscenter - no! I know it is a scheme to get ratings, but the things said by May,Corso, whitlock,Fowler,Salisbury,Maisel,Wilbon,Gallo ect. sticks in the minds of the Voters and I think it should be stopped.

I am BEFUDDLED too!!

Did you even read the post you quoted? No, the articles wouldn't be funny if they were specifically about Ohio State.

I am normally of this mindset as well. However, I did see a commercial for college gameday last night during the Clemson/VT game. They are doing a positive piece on Ryan Harris according to the commercial.

I remember all summer ESPN was jocking the Irish and BQ. So I wouldn't say that they have a agenda to screw ND.

If we would have beat UM, we wouldn't have to worry about polls. The only thing we can do is win out and hope for the best. Dropping a spot in the polls during week 7 doesn't really matter. There is a a bunch of games to be played.

And notice how Clemson got their butts kicked last night. That means we move up atleast one spot! It worries me when our coach is concerned about rankings, he should just be worried about Navy.

what may be funny to one person may not be funny to another. i find humor in it. it cracks me up that the person i quoted before is ranting about how a writer should compose a proper satire article. what a joke.

people are freaking out about a SATIRE writer. The whole point to satire is to get your panties in a bunch. Reading the comments on this thread leads me to believe the guy did his job.

Uh, then you just don't know what you're talking about. The Onion has a method. It's funny for a reason. Gallo's contributions to the sports section of The Onion didn't follow the method at all, and weren't very funny.

i guess not then. i only read it every time i get a copy. the company i work for does business with them on a regular basis. so, i have no clue what i am talking about. i forgot that you must be an editor.

again, what is funny to some isn't funny to others.
