I wanted to get some comments on the Opening Game. Based on all of the information in the mags and blogs, it seems GT is rebuilding thier entire secondary and special team skilled players. QB and #1 Wr are back, but if Reggie Ball is doubled, who is the other options for the passing game.

1. Anyone know anything about thier running game?
2. Any thing special about thier O & D lines?
3. Where do you think GT can hurt ND?
4. Do you think the Heat will play a factor in the Game?

Only watched GT last year against Miami so that is all I have to reflect on.

First off Reggie Ball is the QB for Tech so he can't really be doubled, they have a decent backfield that can make plays but are either solid or cold....obviously GT can hurt ND by having a stud WR and a running mobile QB (see MSU and OSU games in '05). I don't think the heat will affect the game at all, the only weather that could hurt is if there is a Hurricane that brings tons of rain which would kill a passing game.

KMac pretty much nailed their O.

I watched a bit of GT last year. They are a fun team to watch sometimes. They play a hair on fire attacking style defense. They tend to run undersized but very athletic. I love their DC's style. However, attacking defenses tend to play into our strengths. It's defenses like OSU's with the talent to play straight up that give us fits.

GT was a Jekyll and Hyde team last year. They looked like a top 10 team in the Miami and Auburn games. I saw most of both. However, they apparently lay down now and then which gets them beat. I'm guessing they'll be up for ND.

This will be a dangerous game, but the Irish should rightfully be favored.

Are we a better overall team then Tech...no doubt at all, we are far superior. However what worries me is this ND team to me seems like it is going to have a big head going into this game with Quinn, Zibby and Jeff S. all getting major attention and acollades it just worries me ND has historically done best when they fly under the radar.

Good feed, by the way - I know where Reggie plays. I am a little older than you so to explain - "doubled" is and old word for taken out of the scheme or having a linebacker spy the whole game(you really cannot Double Team in College Football like basketball except on the Line, you will get burned in the secondary by a back running to the flat or a fast tight end 1/1 with a linebacker) - hence he would be doubled by the secondary from passing and the spy linebacker from taking off running. I know you young guys are always out to prove that you know something and you did a good job of that after your blast to my comment.

On a strategy note I see ND playing a 3-3-5 on 3rd down situations using one of the 2 new Frosh in the secondary. Really liked what I saw from RM in the Army AA game.

Having to work in the south ALA, GA, Miss I can tell you that I reside in PA - there is a hell of a difference in heat and humidity in AUG. in GA.

alright break it down like this

Fact- GT has lost its leading rusher and Two OL from its offense and the Top 3 Tacklers and 3 starters in the secondary both at Safety on the defense from last season.

Fact- Reggie Ball is a SR mobile QB who can be pretty good at times, we need to spy him I believe with someone like LB Maurice Crum.

Fact- WR Calvin Johnson is a First Team All American, he needs to be doubled almost every play, Zibby and Wooden should blanket this man all day. let them throw to someone else if that have to. or run?

Perspective- First game of the season Georgia Tech's unexperienced defense will allow ND to score a couple quick TDs and get out to a nice lead which we should hold IF

we can control Ball and Johnson in any manner as I described above. Don't let them get started and we should win this game easily.

I didn't try and blast your statement, I just didn't want people reading it and thinking come gameday that Ball played WR because when you say double someone they think WR...so I'm sorry if I offended you I just wanted to set the record straight.

1. I can't recall much about their running backs, but I know that Reggie Ball is a threat to run when the pass breaks down. The defense will see their second mobile signal caller in a row.

2. O line is young but talented, their front four is a strength along with their linebackers. Front seven is strong, secondary somewhat shaky.

3. On offense, it will be Ball's ability to turn something from nothing. Calvin Johnson is the best WR in America. On defense, their front seven could cause problems. That and they have a defensive coordinator in John Tenuta who is as good as it gets.

4. It will be hot for both teams.

I remeber they just got rolled by Utah in their bowl game. Which ruined a parlay I played. That reveiver #21 is really good though. Seems like that had a DB who was like in jail for drug charges the first 8 games in the season and Gailey just let him walk in and start without practicing or anything. Not sure but it wasn't a Randy Moss type joint in his glovebox charge, it was alot of coke, or herion or something. Federal.

Last year...

Last year...

Well Ball had some accuracy issues last year only throwing at about a 48% completion rate, with 11 TD's and 12 INTS. And also while mobile there were several plays he lost yardage on while running...I think about 25% of the time when he tucked it he lost yardage. GT overall was abysmal in the 4th quater last year, I bet they didnt score 5 TD's in the 4th quarter all year long.

I still think it will be competitive, just for the fact that GT will be sold out and they will really be up for us.

Yeah, that about sums them up.

We are going to have to be sharp for this one. I think our offense is well situated to hang 35+ on them...but the defense worries me. When these GT fellows get rolling on offense they are as dangerous as any team. And their QB should not be underestimated.

I think Weis will show our boys some highlights of GT and they will keep it in perspective. Be afraid of games like this...and DON'T ever look past them to the next week.

Weis however, seems very good at keeping the guys focused on the next game to be played...so I think we will win by 2TDs. (41-27)

Yes they did. It was a classic case of being down after expecting a higher bowl invite. And also a perfect example of how inconsistent that team was.
