You beat me to it:

California Surfer Boy?
by RYAN O'LEARY

Were Konrad Reuland the average guy, the last thing he'd want to do after a sleepless weekend 2,000 miles from home would be to take a phone call from a reporter asking questions about his trip.
Apparently, fatigue couldn't dampen his mood.

"It was awesome," Reuland said of his official visit to Notre Dame for the Navy game. "It was even better than I expected."

Reuland said that he got most of the academic meetings out of the way when he visited South Bend during the summer, so this trip was almost entirely football-related. He was hosted by Chris Frome and fellow tight end Anthony Fasano, and said that seeing the success Fasano has had in Charlie Weis' offense was a major selling point.

"I'm definitely looking at what he's been able to do this year," said Reuland. "It doesn't seem like it, but...he's been putting up awesome numbers...(And) I like that they had a lot of two-tight end sets."

Despite the crisp (yet better than usual for November) weather, Reuland didn't mind at all being away from California. He found himself really getting into things at the stadium -- so much so that he even went up into the student section to do some pushups after an Irish touchdown.

"That was pretty sweet," he said. "(The students) were calling my name, calling for me to go up there."

Reuland also had a chance to spend some time with current Notre Dame commits Luke Schmidt and James Aldridge.

"He seems like a really good guy," Reuland said of Aldridge. "He seems like someone I'd want to play with. He didn't put any pressure on me. He just told me how much he likes it there."

Reuland seemed to like it nearly as much, although his stance on making an announcement hasn't changed. He's still taking his official visit to Stanford this weekend -- but he also hasn't scheduled any others and isn't sure if he will.

"We'll see how it goes from there," he said. "But Notre Dame's definitely looking good."

So is his high school team. Mission Viejo wrapped up a 10-0 regular season on Friday and opens the California playoffs with a home game against Saugus.

If his tone following the weekend is any indication, Reuland could very well be playing in California again next November -- when he goes back with the Irish for the USC game.

Jiggs, on a scale of 1 to10 it sounds like he's an 11. Let's hope another piece of the puzzle is in place.

Nice. This one sounds promising.

It will be nice to have a foothold at Mission Viejo.

Things are really picking up with recruiting again. I think with the season winding down, everyone is looking to get on board and decide before the holidays.

It will be nice to have a foothold at Mission Viejo.

Also, a big plus. This would be like cat piss in Pete Carroll's Cheerios. AND...ND is recruiting Steve Smith's brother out of Taft in SoCal?

The best business model there is: Attack your competitors.

Irish Lead For Reuland After Visit
Mike Farrell

The No. 42 player in the country, Konrad Reuland out of Mission Viejo, Calif. took his first official visit of the season to South Bend last weekend. The 6-foot-6, 239-pounder enjoyed his visit to Notre Dame and also enjoyed the Irish's victory over Navy.

"The visit was a lot of fun and I had a real good time," he said. "I got there Friday afternoon and went to the pep rally. Then I met with the athletic director and went out to dinner with some of the coaches. On Saturday, I met with the president of the university, the assistant dean of the business school and went to the game. That night I went out with my hosts Chris Frome and Anthony Fasano. They were really cool guys and I had a good time with them. They answered a lot of my questions about the team, coach Weis and gave a lot of positive feedback.

"Then on Sunday I met with coach Weis before I left. My conversation with him went really well. I talked about how I feel about Notre Dame and he asked about my official. He told me that I'm the only tight end they are offering no matter what, so that was kind of cool because they obviously have a lot of faith in me and I know I'm really wanted."

Though it wasn't the most competitive game, Reuland enjoyed watching Notre Dame's 42-21 victory over Navy.

"The game was awesome and I loved the whole gameday setting," he said. "I haven't seen anything like that before. The fans are the best I've seen and I've been to a bunch of college games. You could tell they had a lot of tradition. The atmosphere was great too, it was obviously a game you're not looking forward to the most, but it was sold out like every week and I got to sit in the student section and they did pushups with me and my brother.

"In the game, I noticed they use a lot of two and three tight end sets. They threw to the tight end a lot, so that's really good to see too."

The four-star prospect had a hard time rating the visit, but thoroughly enjoyed his time in South Bend.

"I'd say Notre Dame is way up there now," he said. "I can't rate the visit, but they are definitely one of the teams I'm strongly looking at. I'd give them a slight edge, but I plan to see other schools still and see how I feel about them."

Reuland plans to take his next official this weekend to Stanford.

"I'm hoping to just get a better feel of what gameday is like and the whole atmosphere there," he said. "I want to see what the coaches are like and if they are ones I want to play for. We'll see what happens."

I think ND will hold out until Signing Day for McCoy and Young.

Everyone else is jumping in before it's too late.

This recruiting season has been absolutely brilliant in terms of execution, strategy and results.

Speaking of his official trip to Notre Dame, California tight end Konrad Reuland said, "I really had a good visit. I was out there unofficially this summer to check it out, and I saw the campus and found out about the academics, so all of that was out of the way for the official visit. I was able to focus on the game day atmosphere and I really had a good time..."

It's one trip down for Scout.com's second-ranked tight end in the country, Konrad Reuland (6-6, 240, 4.7), and two to go?
"I'm going to narrow my list to three schools in the next couple of weeks," explained Reuland, of Mission Viejo High School, Calif. "I might possibly take two more visits. I haven't scheduled the others yet."

"I was thinking of doing a visit to Stanford this weekend (Nov. 18). But, I'm not going to do that. They are off my list.

"I thought hard about it, and I couldn't really see myself there," Reuland said.

Other schools still in contention include UCLA, USC, Miami, Nebraska and Notre Dame.

His sole official visit this season has been to Notre Dame on Nov. 12.

"I really had a good visit. I was out there unofficially this summer to check it out, and I saw the campus and found out about the academics, so all of that was out of the way for the official visit. I was able to focus on the game day atmosphere and I really had a good time.

"Friday my host was Chris Frome (defensive line) and then Saturday it was Anthony Fasano (tight end). I was able to hang out with the players Saturday after the game and had a good time.

"I could see myself fitting in there, definitely," he concluded.

"I am looking for a place with great academics -- that's really important to me. Also, a place that excels in football, where, if all goes well, will prepare me to make the next level. It needs to be a place balanced between football and academics, definitely.

"It would be a huge plus if the school had the type of exposure to possibly get me into the NFL, but it's not a basis on which I am looking at programs."

UCLA and USC are the only programs he is now looking at in-state. "They are both still on my list. I mean, UCLA has really got it going this year. They are a team on the rise. I really like the way they utilize their tight end, Marcedes Lewis. And the coaching staff… I am close with them; they are great guys.

"Close to home would be nice, but it's not by any means a major factor, though. I'm not afraid to leave Southern California. The comfort level is a plus.

"USC, well, they get it done year in and year out. They will be on top for a while. Coach (Pete) Carroll would be a fun guy to play for -- he's a dynamic guy. You can't go wrong with a program like that," Reuland explained.

"From a tight end's perspective, Miami is intriguing. They have had top tight ends year in and year out. I know they could develop me into a good player. They really get it done with their tight ends. Coach (Mario) Cristobal (tight ends) and I have a good relationship. I was there this summer and I know they have a good education there.

"Nebraska is another school like UCLA -- they are on the rise. Coach (Bill) Callahan has implemented the West Coast offense there, and I think they will continue to get better and better. They will be one up near the top in a few years. I like the way the tight end is featured in the West Coast offense -- that's good for me. There's kind of some sentimental attachment there, too, because they were the first to offer," he concluded.

Mission Viejo is 10-0 on the season with their first game of playoffs set to face Saugus (4-6). According to Reuland, "A lot of times I only play the first half because we are winning by so much. I usually just sit out the second half and watch the second and third string play. Very rarely this season have our starters played into the fourth quarter for us." Reuland's stats this season reflect his amount of game play. He reports 20 catches for 250-300 yards and four touchdowns.
