Has anyone else noticed that he seems to be changing from a Buckeye fan to an Irish fan recently. I think he realizes that O$U is not what is used to be when he went there when it was a proud and respected school. He has predicted the Irish to win the National Championship, and Brady Quinn to win the Heisman, even though Ohio State and Troy Smith are popular picks. He also has predicted that BQ will be THE quarterback in college football in 2006. Is Herbstreit now becoming more of an Irish fan than a Buckeye fan?

I don't know about all that, but I know this, he is an excellent handicapper, and really knows his stuff. His word is worth like 10 times what any other analyst says. The guy understands the game. I respect him and value his opinions.

If there weren't idiots like Mark May, I don't think Herbstreit would look as pro-ND as he does. Herbstreit in my opinion is pretty neutral, but only looks like an ND supporter by contrast.

That said, I love the guy. He's a great analyst and is one of the most neutral football commentators in the country.. which is why his criticisms are the only ones I take seriously--fortunately he doesn't have many bad things to say about the ND football team anymore under Weis.

he doesn't follow the politically correct party line...he actually thinks and gives his...opinion. considering what goober company he works for that is truly rare.

I was in the elevator with the Gameday crew 2 seasons ago, and I can tell you that Kirk loves Memphis' most infamous strip club...Platinum Plus.

You hit the nail on the head man.

I always thought he would naturally be a basher. I was wrong...so wrong.

Herbie calls them like he sees them. I enjoy listening to his commentary and respect his judgement.

i'll have to second everything that's already been said. it's hard to not like a guy who pulls for notre dame every week, but lets face it...he's not a "notre dame lover" he just says it like it is with no bias. I agree that his criticism is taken very seriously even when he has none. It can be great thing to hear nothing but praise from analysts, but from what i've learned over the years in anything one does, criticism (in a good light) is something i wish we heard more of from Kirk. Criticism can really fire a person up when it hits the nail on the head. I'll be interested to hear the differences in Kirk and Mark mays pre-season prediction on game day. We already know Kirk thinks the stars are alligned for notre dame, but I'm sure Mark will have different ideas. Knowing Mark he will predict a decent season for Notre Dame, but will remind the public that the irish probably won't make it to a BCS game. As much as I hate Mark May, I love it even more when he is dead wrong. Let's hope he picks a .500 year for the Irish.

I think you're remembering a past that didn't exist. O$U wasn't any more respected when Herbie was there that it is now.

I've stated before that I enjoy his point of view when it comes to the game and he is one of the best in the business.

And he's working for ESPN. Go figure.

Kirk is a great analyst, he really offsets Corso's goofiness on Saturday mornings. College Gameday has become as important as Sunday NFL Countodown in my house. I can't wait to see what Mark May has to say about the Irish this year, he was 3-9 in picking Irish games last year since he picked them to lose every game. He is the biggest Irish hater that I've seen on what should be a neutral tv show.

I love Lou's quip (I forget when and where) which was something to the effect of.....

"Mark is not bad guy and furthermore it's not his fault that he got a terrible education at Pitt."

I saw a news release on ESPN.com the Kirk will NOT be on college gameday this year...he is moving to do color commentary on the ESPN primetime game. HE will be replaced on Gameday by DOug Flutie.

As far as I am concerned, this is the worst move in ESPN programming history. The end of an era.

I understand Mark May's job is in jeopardy. He's perceived as becoming too mellow about ND.

The powers that be are looking for real ND haters to replace him. Bob Wieneke and Jeff Carroll currently lead the pack based upon their four part audition for the job.

I agree with you 100%. Herbie was the best part of Game Day to me... A few guys would spew, but Herbie tried to be good and accurate. His Buckeye butt will be missed in that seat.

It is disappointing that he isn't going to be on it anymore. Especially since they extended the show to two hours.

Yeah, I just about wept openly when I heard he was not going to be on gameday anymore. What better way to kick off a saturday of college football watching gameday to get psyched up for the day. I liked all 3 of those guys on gameday, even if Corso is off his rocker, and you all said all the things I think about May, what a damn fool that guy is. Wish it was him that left instead of Alberts. Hopefully Flutie will be a good fit on there this year, but it won't be the same without Kirk.
